Team Rainbow returns to the shadowy world of counter-terrorism with an all-new game, all-new action and an all-new global threat

Tactical, squad-based shooters don't come much more nail-biting than the Rainbow Six series and the latest instalment is no exception. A nefarious terrorist organisation is trying to sour relationships between Saudi Arabia and the US with the hope of causing global instability, and it's up to the brave boys of Team Rainbow to find the cause and deal with it - permanently.

Guide your team of hardened, military experts through a series of covert operations around the world. You'll be travelling to locations as varied as London, the Cayman Islands and Rio de Janeiro, which may sound glamorous, but they all hide a deadly mystery that you must unravel if you hope to thwart the course of global terrorism.

Use your heightened skills of stealth, combat and squad tactics to maximise your chances of success across the immersive single player missions, or team up with a buddy for split-screen, cooperative action. For the ultimate challenge, take your covert ops expertise online and take part in three conflict modes alongside up to seven other players (two teams of four).

Rainbow Six 3 utilises a voice command function, so commanders can bark orders verbally to their computer-controlled squad via a USB Headset. When facing down the terrorists online, you can coordinate your attacks through the headset, secretly communicating with members of your team to become the ultimate online force. Of course, all of this brilliant gameplay comes with the high level of realism you'd expect from the author of The Hunt For Red October, Patriot Games and The Sum of All Fears: Tom Clancy.

    • The latest in the hit Rainbow Six series

    • The ultimate in squad-based tactical action

    • Issue commands verbally via a USB headset in the solo game and coordinate your online operations with your team mates

    • Split-screen function for two players to cooperate in obliterating the threat of global terrorism

www.nintendo.com - Gamecube:
The elite four breaches the Nintendo GameCube.

There is no I in "team," but there's one in "Six": Rainbow Six. If your teamwork fails in Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six 3, the consequences for you are ominous.

    Features

    • 15 levels of play
    • More than 30 weapons
    • Two-player split screen action

You play Ding Chavez, leader of the Rainbow team. Ding and his team of three travel the world over to cool off hot situations that threaten to disrupt the oil market and throw the United States into chaos.

As leader, you control your team's every move through giving orders. Other team members can lead the way into new rooms every time, or you can have them follow you. Order them to throw grenades into a room, then follow the grenade up and clear the room of bad guys.

The computer AI does a good job of controlling the specific actions of team members. Sometimes your men are going to be human and miss while firing at enemies. At other times they'll get caught by surprise and get gunned down by a terrorist behind a door. Usually, though, they'll fire dead-on like the elite marksmen they are.

Because of this unpredictability, you as team leader must decide when it's the right time to be the first one in a room. When is the best time to fall back and let your teammates face the bullets? If members of your team perish before the mission ends, you can still complete your mission. However, if you die in the line of fire, the mission is over. (At the start of each new mission, your team comes back to life to help you again.)

Before you start each mission, you get to choose which four weapons you want to take into battle. Choose two types of grenades and two guns. The impressive selection of firearms offers you something special for every mission. Guns are rated by accuracy, damage caused, zoom capabilities and ammunition capacity. You don't want to bring a shotgun to a heavily guarded area, but it can work well for rescue missions.

Graphically, the game doesn't disappoint. With all first-person shooters, it's vital that the setting stays intact when you quickly rotate your view or change your direction. With Rainbow Six 3's smooth frame rate, you can't blame the graphics if you shoot and miss. The game takes a long time to load between missions, but you'll find the gameplay well worth the wait.

A cool feature of Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six 3 is that you can team up with a friend in split-screen mode. Select any of the missions in the game and choose your character and weapons. Player one uses the top half of the screen and player two the bottom. Don't get caught in crossfire: As you might imagine, your bullets will damage your partner. That's not nice.

    Bottom Line

Rainbow Six 3 puts your leadership skills to the test. Sometimes your hunches will pay off. Other times, you'll wish you had thrown a grenade into a room instead of walking into the line of fire.

2002 PCPowerPlay Guide (UbiSoft):
Most fans of the first person shooter genre already know about Tom Clancy's Raven Shield, the next incarnation in the Rainbow Six series. A joint development by Ubi Soft's Montreal studio and Red Storm Entertainment, and using the Unreal Warfare engine, Raven Shield is a truly revolutionary step forward for the tactical first person shooter genre.

As terrorists threaten to put the world on the brink of geopolitical turmoil, players must use their skills, as well as a range of high-tech gadgets and weapons to protect the world as we know it. Not only does the team have a large range of gadgets at their disposal, but the players freedom to interact with the team is at an all-time high. For the first time in an FPS, players have full control over peek and crouch - meaning they can peek just far enough around a corner to eliminate any threat.

Player's ability to infiltrate is also improved thanks to the introduction of gradual and quick door opening. The Rainbow Six team can either slowly open doors to sneak up on enemies, or burst through quickly to surprise those inside. No longer must doors be either fully open or fully closed - every position in between is possible!

One of the most useful additions to the players interface is the "Wind Rose" system, an on-screen HUD which allows clear and fast orders to be issued to your computer controlled teammates. Players can issue orders like "Open, Frag and Clear" to quickly and easily infiltrate a room enemies are occupying.

Of course, multiplayer and First Person Shooters go hand in hand, and using the power of the Unreal Warfare engine, the multiplayer in this Rainbow Six game is like none before it. Finally there will be dedicated servers - allowing for the best possible multiplayer experience. Most innovatively, there will be a 'commander mode' which will allow one player to act as a General, who will not take part in the action but instead coordinate his team's tactics from a safe place. Tactical gameplay will reach a level of refinement never before seen. Perhaps most exciting is the prospect of a global clan and player ladder for all players who connect and play through ubi.com.

Raven Shield will give players a behind the scenes look at various government agencies as they discover, through the course of the Clancy-crafted storyline, the various black-ops factions at work in the world today.

    FAST FACTS:
Fact: Raven Shield will be one of the first games around to use the new Unreal Warfare engine - even before Unreal 2!
