Although I've described the game as two separate entities, Neversoft has bridged the gap between them to create an irresistible package born of the classic mold but with an invigorating twist.

Although the game is titled “Tony Hawk’s Underground 2," THUG 2 features a healthy dose of Viva la Bam’s Bam Margera. Tony Hawk’s Underground 2 (“THUG 2”) is the sixth game in the Tony Hawk series and as such includes only mild changes to the already great gameplay. While this isn’t really a problem, as the fundamental gameplay is excellent and some of the new additions are pretty cool, it does make you wonder how long Neversoft can pull off these yearly sequels.

In many ways, if you played the last game in this popular skateboarding series, Tony Hawk's Underground, then you've already played the new one, not surprisingly titled Tony Hawk's Underground 2. Most of the gameplay has remained the same, the graphics have improved ever so slightly, and the types of goals are a lot like its predecessor. Basically, it's more of the same, wrapped up in a slightly more sophomoric, mean-spirited package, thanks to the ubiquitous prescence of MTV bad boy Bam Margera. That's not a bad thing, of course, as the game is still the best way to get the ollies out of your system without risking a broken ankle.

Speaking as a fan of the series ever since it popped up on the Sega Dreamcast, the Tony Hawk games never ceased to impress me. Color me impressed when the series made a dramatic change with Tony Hawk Pro Skater 3 and then dazzle us with a great fourth offering. When Tony Hawk’s Underground came out, I began to worry that the series might just lose it’s charm. In fact, I began to feel that I’ve seen and done everything this series has to offer but then comes Tony Hawk’s Underground 2 and much like The Godfather’s Michael Corleone it just keeps pulling me back in . . . gladly I might add. GameCube fans rejoice . . . another skating classic is born.

Neversoft may have just about painted itself into a corner with Tony Hawk's Underground 2. If anybody who's not already the hardest of the hardcore exhausts what this game has to offer...well, they're the hardest of the hardcore now.

After an onslaught of extreme games that came and went and Activision's curious pursuit of the most eccentric regions of extreme sports, such as wakeboarding, the world is left with one -- and thankfully, the best -- of them all, the Tony Hawk series. Going into its sixth iteration, Neversoft's Tony Hawk's Underground 2 is the culmination of six years or refinement, experiment, and expansion from a series that rewrote the way action videogames are played. Not to mention making Activision, Neversoft, and Tony Hawk himself very rich and very popular in the process.

Tony Hawk is 36 years old. He was married for eight years and has three sons. He's an entrepreneur, a cultural icon, a video game pioneer and the greatest skateboarder to ever enter a vert ramp. So why is he running around barfing on cops, flicking boogers at pedestrians and trashing absolutely anything he can get his board on?

All in all, Tony Hawk's Underground 2 is a strong skateboarding game, though if you've remained devoted to the series, you might not be so impressed with its changes. Nevertheless, the gameplay remains fast, fluid, and exciting. The visuals are, for the most part, pretty sharp, and the story mode, though short and devoid of much of the character development that made up most of the previous game's story, is still fun to blast through. So fans of the series will definitely have some good times with THUG2, though you'll probably also come away feeling that THUG2 is merely more of the same.

If you've picked up a controller in the past six years, you've become accustomed to the domination of the extreme genre by Tony Hawk. The Birdman has single handedly revolutionized the skateboard game with solid controls, tons of characters and expansive environments packed with ramps and half pipes. Whats more, when the franchise seemed to get a bit stale with its lineup of pro skaters, Hawk turned the field on its ear with THUG. Last years title was an ambitious game that cast the player in the role of a fledgling skater trying to achieve his dreams of skating superstardom. This years sequel presents a separate take on your boarding aspirations. Grab your favorite board, because were grabbing big air in Tony Hawk Underground 2.
