Gangland

Gangland is a good cocktail of RTS, RPG and SIM. MediaMobsters have succeeded in making it more than a "Gangsters 3" by throwing in complete control and great action in a 3D environment. If you're searching for something else then you should give this one a try.

It always puzzles me when a morally reprehensible (yet, somehow fun) game can be made with little public attention or outcry – unless, of course, it has “Grand Theft Auto” somewhere in the title. In many ways, Gangland is Grand Theft Auto taken into the real-time strategy realm, but such a comparison is not only unfair, but too superficial to hint at the full depth of Gangland.

Für Mafia-Fans ist das Spiel wirklich ein Muss. Es überzeugt zwar nicht wirklich im Gameplay aber es macht doch schon Spaß und ist einmal etwas anderes als diese Standart-Strategiespiele. Für Anfänger ist es zu empfehlen, welche noch nicht sehr viele Erfahrungen mit Strategiespielen gemacht haben, denn es ist recht einfach und übersichtlich aufgebaut.

Ultimately Gangland is a good game that probably could have used some refinement in the way combat was handled and could have used a lot more common NPC interaction. While the gameplay isn't perfect, Gangland is not without some fun gameplay elements. If players can get by the chaotic combat system and are willing to apply the recently released update (playing without saves is very very frustrating) then Gangland will probably be an enjoyable experience.

Gang Land est un jeu bourré de bonnes idées. Il aurait même pu prétendre au titre de chef-d'oeuvre s'il les avait exploitées à fond. Ainsi, l'aspect RPG et le fait de voir évoluer ses personnages est très intéressant, mais on ne conserve hélas pas ses hommes et son argent d'une mission sur l'autre. De même, l'aspect stratégie est très intéressant, mais finalement le nombre d'unités que l'on peut diriger reste assez limité. Mais le jeu de MediaMobsters reste tout de même un titre à essayer pour son ambiance et pour la richesse de son gameplay.

Damit hätte Don Corleone nicht gerechnet: Gangland bringt Hektik in den geruhsamen Alltag der Familie. Eigentlich ist die Mafia das etwas derbere Sinnbild für den Begriff der Familie. Eine Hand wäscht die andere, Vetternwirtschaft, Loyalität bis ans Sterbebett und so weiter. In der Mangano-Familie jedoch scheint der Nachwuchs nach anderen Grundsätzen aufgezogen worden zu sein. So kommt es eines Abends zu handfesten Streitigkeiten zwischen den fünf sizilianischen Brüdern, die auch ein Machtwort des greisen Großvaters nicht mehr stoppen kann.

Een sfeervol en mooi vormgegeven strategiespel, dat echter door een zwakke afwerking en enkele frustrerende foutjes wordt geteisterd.

Ich hatte mich auf Gangland gefreut. Die Kombination aus Echtzeit-Strategie, Action und Simulation klang vielversprechend. Allerdings lassen in der finalen Version Schwierigkeitsgrad und Spielbalance zu wünschen übrig. Schon am Anfang werden Sie mit heftigen Missionen und schweren Bandenkämpfen konfrontiert, die selbst auf der einfachsten Stufe sehr fordernd sind. Trotz guter Grafik und knackigen Sounds zieht mich Gangland nicht so stark in den Bann wie seinerzeit Mafia, das immer noch mein Genre-Favorit ist.

Like so many Mafia epics, Gangland reaches a predictable conclusion: great concept, spotty execution.

Außerdem spielen sich die Levels auf Dauer zu gleich, originelle Ideen fehlen. Wer damit leben kann, bekommt ein interessantes Mafia-Strategiespiel, das eine erfrischende Alternative zum Einheitsbrei aus Fantasy und Zweiter Weltkrieg der letzten Monate bietet. Für Möchtegern-Mafiosi ein Angebot, das sie nicht ablehnen sollten.

On the surface, it would seem like Gangland would be a surefire hit. It leverages the popular gangster theme and melds it into a hybrid game that is part action, part strategy, and part simulation. You can run a number of illegal businesses, like speakeasies, brothels, chop shops, and moonshine distilleries, while also raising a family, putting out contract hits, and performing drive-bys. So, in theory, there's something for everyone here. Unfortunately, the execution of many of Gangland's different elements falls short of its lofty promise, thus leaving a game that has a lot of good ideas but is sometimes convoluted and often frustrating.

A little more complexity and a little less assault with deadly weapons would be welcome, although it is an ugly business. If the real mob acted like the characters in Gangland do though, we’d be disintegrating them on sight by now. The super-units are great and show an appreciation for strategy. Overall, this game is good but not spectacular, falling a bit short of what is promised on the box.

If your desire to be a criminal mastermind isn't enough to get you over a steep learning curve and overlook some flaws, you'd be well-advised to look to other more polished titles for your strategy fix.

Bienvenue dans une contrée magnifique appelé « Little Italie » ou plus couramment appelé « le pays merveilleux du Gang ». Votre but est simple : devenir le pire mafieux sur Terre et ce en rackettant de pauvres commerçants, en assassinant vos ennemis, volant des voitures, faisant exploser des bâtiments, etc. Bref, tout ce qu’un bon gangster se doit de faire.

Gangland is a solid gaming concept stuck inside a clumsy interface and wrapped in a cozy blanket of programming bugs.

Gangland sounds so good on paper: part strategy, part sim and part RPG in a mafia setting. I was really excited about the possibilities, because I’m a huge fan of all three genres. Unfortunately, the steep difficulty of managing characters can become overwhelming, and the combat at times seems a bit too fast-paced for the game’s own good. The result is a good concept that finds itself in a messy situation, the video-game equivalent of cement shoes.

The game touts itself on the back of the box as 'a unique blend of RTS/RPG/SIM and is a helluva-lotta fun.' The game does marry all of those genres to a certain extent as you do recruit new units after gathering money from your criminal activities (like an RTS), your units do gain experience and increase their skills (like an RPG) and you get sub commanders for your gang by meeting a woman, marrying her, and raising kids (ala The Sims). It's an interesting concept but it just did not really catch my fancy... and I also had to deal with all of the abovementioned gameplay drawbacks. In short, after doing this review, I certainly don't feel the incentive to play the game again, and I'm afraid neither will anyone else (especially not until they fix the save option thing).

Gangland feels like a game that's still in the midst of development, with the underdone vehicle system, odd dialogue quirks, lack of auto-saves or manual saves and random violence. After playing games like Mafia and Hitman 2, there really isn't much I can recommend about Gangland. In addition to all the design issues, the visuals are all behind the curve, particularly the blocky character models.

А они этого не сделали. Не добились гармонии, игре оказалось неуютно в собственной шкуре. Играющего не покидает чувство дискомфорта. Неплохие идеи не получили дожной реализации, некоторы откровенно неудачные ходы, напротив, без проблем проскочили ОТК, все плюсы поели минусы, и в сухом остатке мы получили яркую оболчку с зияющей пустотой внутри. И где-то в глубине этой пустоты изредка вспыхивают тысклые лампочки интереса, да иногда по ночам ветер доносит едва уловимые шорохи угасшей надежды. В вас ещё теплится желание побыть гангстером?

Gang Land est pêtri de potentiel, et de bonnes idées. Malheureusement, tout ça est noyé et perdu dans un gameplay totalement raté. Reste à prier que les gars de Médiamobsters sortent au plus vite un patch pour sauver leur produit. Un gros.
