Gauntlet II

I'm a great fan of the Gauntlet games, and Gauntlet II simply blew me away. Graphically excellent, and audibly superb (there's all the speech from the coin-op in there, too!), this has a level of addictiveness that just doesn't let up, no matter how repetitive the action may seem. With the four-player option as well, Gauntlet II represents excellent value for money, and fans of the genre and the coin-op would do well to grab it quick.

The graphics are a step forward from the first game and even though they aren't the best, they add a nice touch to the arcade style of the game. The music and sounds in the game are your average arcade blips and bleeps, but these are perfect for capturing old but neat style of the game. If you liked the arcade dungeon-raiding goodness of the first Gauntlet, I guarantee you'll love this game even more.

Et puis surtout, il est possible de s'amuser avec le principe du jeu tel quel, aussi relâché soit-il, de découvrir les qualités de ses défauts apparents. Ce n'est pas un jeu dans lequel on trouve du génie, et il aurait plus sa place dans le coffre à jouets que sur l'étagère, mais il produit facilement quelques heures de plaisir quand l'envie nous prend.

Mindscape ist es tatsächlich gelungen, das Automatenvorbild nahezu unverändert für das NES umzusetzen. Von der verständlichen Sprachausgabe ("Warrior is now It!") bis hin zu den unterschiedlichen Gegnern wurde jede Kleinigkeit beachtet und adaptiert. Ein Riesenlob an den Grafiker, der aus dem NES prachtvolle Monster und Dungeons hervorgezaubert hat. Da sich die Levels nicht zu sehr ähneln und immer neue Spielelemente und Sonderregeln (in manchen Levels können sich die Spieler gegenseitig verletzen) für Abwechslung sorgen, wird Gauntlet II so schnell nicht langweilig. Im Solomodus "nur" ein gutes, durchdachtes Action-Adventure, sucht Gauntlet II ab zwei Personen aufwärts seinesgleichen. Es ist das definitiv bislang beste Multispielermodul fürs NES.

Schnappt euch zwei bzw. drei Freunde, sichert vorher ab das ausreichend Controller vorhanden sind und schon kann der gesellige 8-Bit Abend beginnen! Meiner bescheidenen Meinung nach werdet ihr auf dem NES nur wenige, ebenbürdige Multiplayergames finden. Auch Einzelspieler kommen auf ihre Kosten, verständlicherweise lässt hier die Motivation aber bereits erheblich früher nach. Für Multiplayerfans ein Muß!

Glücklicherweise ist bei der Umsetzung des Automatenklassikers "Gauntlet II" auf das NES nichts verlorengegangen. So findet der Gauntlet II-Veteran alle Monster an seinem Platz (inklusive dem IT-Monster, das eine Spielfigur zum Monstermagneten werden läßt), Fallen, brüchige Wände, Ausgänge, Schlüssel und Schatzkisten entsprechen genau der Vorlage. Zwar ist das Spielprinzip sehr simpel, aber wer sich mit mehreren Kumpels in die Labyrinthe traut, kann mit fröhlicher Kurzweil rechnen. Die heitere Monsterjagd wird durch wirkungsvolle Extras ebenso bereichert wie durch die bunte Grafik.

If you're in the mood to tackle wave after wave of monsters online or with friends, Gauntlet II should satisfy that urge and is worth its $5 price tag. However, it's worth noting that the game has previously been part of several Midway arcade compilations, each of which includes around 20 or more games for about $20.

Adventurers beware! The coming of Gauntlet II for Game Boy guarantees that you will find no peace of mind until you visit the 100 levels. Mindscape's newest version of it's origins with impressive sound and speech effects and a nearly impossible to memorize random mix of mazes. The four characters will be familiar to fans of Gauntlet II for the NES. Even the graphics have changed a little. And best o fall, it's a Game Link game, so you can take along a partner to share in your adventure.

For five bucks, Gauntlet II isn't the worst deal on the PlayStation Store, but its repetition and lack of extras don't make it the best one either. There are much newer and more interesting options already available for roughly the same amount of money (flOw, Lemmings, and Mortal Kombat II to name a few) and the poorly-executed online options absolutely seal its fate. Unless you're a diehard Gauntlet maniac, your attention is better served elsewhere.
