When all is said and done, Gears of War 2 is the game to experience with friends. Whether it's an intimate setting like the story mode with two players, or it's more of a party like atmosphere with five players in Horde mode, there's very little to complain about. Once again Epic has set the bar in terms of a cooperative experience, everyone else - take note.
The Review Busters
In the biggest lineup in the 360s existence I would have to say Gears of War 2 is truly a masterpiece and it is one of the best games of the year. I have given other games perfects before and I sort of regret it now (Halo 3 and Grand Theft Auto IV are my two big regrets). For as long as I’ve played Gears of War 2 so far I have no problem giving this game a perfect. If you don’t own a 360 yet and you consider yourself a gamer then you have some real problems, BUY THIS GAME NOW!!!
Gears of War 2 isn't going to change anybody's mind about the Gears of War series. If you hated the first one, this game won't make you a convert; however, if you even mildly enjoyed it, the second game is a must-play, because it really improves upon everything the first one set forth. Claiming that Gears of War 2 is a perfect five-star game seems drastic, but I really believe that this is the best game that's been released all year (and I bought a Playstation 3 JUST for Metal Gear Solid 4, which I loved) and I also believe that nothing else coming out will come close to it in terms of pure, unfiltered fun. Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm about to play a five-person Cole Train Horde game.
The Video Game Critic
The hours simply fly by once you get caught up in the madness ("Dude, it's almost 12 o'clock!"). No matter what mode I played however, I encountered glaring bugs ranging from getting completely stuck in an open area to temporarily losing control of my character. Gears 2 could have been an A+ game, but these glitches take the sheen off an otherwise first-rate shooting experience.
Gears of War 2 is probably one of the best action games I’ve ever played. Not THE best, but it’s up there. The single-player campaign is an absolute thrill ride while the promise of co-op play and the myriad of online features add a healthy shelf-life to the title--one that will surely see returns to your console throughout the months to come. If you were a fan of Gears of War, then this title is a must-buy. There’s just more of everything this time around: there’s more story, more action, more variety, and more online offerings than you can possibly tackle in your first few days with the game. Unlike other big titles this fall, Gears of War 2 is all about buckling in for a ride. And what a ride it is!
But rare gripes aside, Gears 2 is an epic adventure that I reckon you’ll play through at least twice, the co-op game is even better than before aided by some tremendous level design that doesn't rely on the split routes of Gears 1 to make you cooperate. With its new modes the multiplayer will probably tempt you to try them too, even if like many (including myself) you have doubts about a third-person game's viability as a fast-paced multiplayer game. Gears 2 will change that way of thinking for good.
Just in case I haven’t been absolutely clear about this, you need to get Gears of War 2. Now. If you don’t own an Xbox 360 then get one. If you’re low on cash then get a job. Gears of War 2 has a lot to compete with this year – LittleBigPlanet, Fallout 3 and Call of Duty: World at War, among many others, yet it has nothing to worry about. Gears 2 is the Game of the Year. Fact. Not only that, but it’s also one of the finest titles of this generation so far, taking into account the entire package. If you don’t have an Xbox Live account yet then this will be the very game that convinces you to get online. Epic Games, we salute you, for you have melted our brains yet again.
Gears of War 2 is a stellar shooting game and easily one of the best games of the year. The single-player campaign, drop-in drop-out online co-op (and split screen), and incredibly varied multiplayer, coupled with fantastic production values make this game hard to top.
Gears of War 2 is, simply put, an improvement in every aspect. It's not clever or subtle in the way of many games, but it's big, loud, excessively violent and, all in all, down right dumb fun.
Gears of War 2 does everything you wanted the original to do and then some. I have never been so hooked on a game. I couldn't put it away until I beat it. I just couldn't get enough of the intense action, the beautiful visuals and I especially couldn't get enough of the story. Well written and well acted, Gears 2 will have you playing the campaign over and over again. And the multiplayer is, in a word, awesome. I couldn't ask for anything more in a game. If you won a 360 and loved the first one, well, this is a no-brainer. Buy Gears 2. If you have a 360 and didn't care about the first game, Gears 2 could be the first game to actually change your opinion.
As a sequel, you’d be hard-pushed to track down a game that is as brilliantly structured, nurtured and evolved as Gears of War 2. With a ruthlessly enthralling pace and variation of set pieces, this is an effortlessly superb package. I haven’t enjoyed a game as much as this since Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, which is surely one of the greatest compliments a title can get. With refined gameplay and a real sense of evolution, Gears of War 2 has sliced the battle for Game of The Year wide open with one limb-dismembering swipe of fury.
G4 TV: X-Play
Having expanded on their previous game in every way, Epic has a real gem on their hands. The deeper story and amazing visuals will pull you deeper into the Gears universe (Gearsiverse?), and the expansive multiplayer options will not make leaving easy. Exceeding already lofty expectations, Gears of War 2 raises the bar a notch for action games this holiday season, and that is no small feat. If you don’t have an Xbox 360 yet, Gears of War 2 is as good a reason as any to compose a short letter to Santa.
The good news is that Gears of War 2 significantly improves upon the original game in every possible way, addressing several key shortcomings that kept its predecessor from being a bona-fide classic. Gears of War 2 is a terrific action game that deservedly resides in the upper echelon of console shooters, and is the best shooter to hit the Xbox 360 so far this year. Action gamers, you've found your next obsession.
But much like the rest of the game, that fact shouldn't give you pause. Gears' gameplay isn't mindless warfare -- it's intensely focused, visceral fun. The cover system, despite its returning flaws, is still addictive. Likewise, hunkering down in the game's Roadie Run -- during which the camera pulls down close to your character as he ducks and runs -- again feels limited, as it's not conducive to either keeping an eye (and the camera) ahead of you or making tight turns. For such a stunning game, these held-over missteps seem odd, but they have little impact on Gears 2's impressive level of polish across the board. A nice, thick coat of blood red polish at that.
Some people will no doubt criticise Gears of War 2 for what it's not. It's not as emotionally deep as other games on the market, it's not a 30 hour + epic and it's not art in video game form, but is arguably the greatest action game ever created. In a year full of incredible games, Gears of War 2 sits triumphantly at the very top.
Although it would have been easy for the developers at Epic to crank out a sequel to Gears of War with a minimum of effort, Gears of War 2 feels like a labor of love in many ways. It features a number of new gameplay mechanics that instantly feel familiar and necessary, a greatly improved story, and some of the most amazing visuals we've ever seen in a game. Best of all, the multiplayer offerings have been completely reworked to make them much more user-friendly, and Horde mode is going to keep people coming back for more. It still remains to be seen if this will be the game that makes Marcus Fenix the poster boy for the Xbox 360, but it certainly feels like a possibility. Master Chief, the ball is in your court!
The differences and enhancements in Gears of War 2 feel very calculated and intelligent. It's clear that no one set out to break things that worked before, and the most dramatic steps were taken in an effort to widen the game's appeal to players who might not be good enough to play it, otherwise. But it takes on this task without dumbing itself down and alienating the people who already liked the first game. Academically, it's interesting to see this balancing act in motion. But all you really need to know is that Gears of War 2 is a terrific, kick-ass shooter with enough stuff in it to keep you busy for a pretty long time.
Games like this really makes the Xbox 360 look good in every way as the franchise continues in the right direction. Of course, the game shines and was born to be experienced on the multiplayer level through cooperative play and the other matchmaking modes but the solo campaign itself will give players enough bang to their buck and will even make you want to plug your console online in order to satisfy your curiosity and explore the whole "Gears" aspect to the limit. Talk about a "killer app" game huh?
I could go on about other little details of the game that are very pleasing – the war journal that tracks achievements and collectibles, the achievements themselves, the Flashback Map Pack – but you should really go explore those on your own. Gears of War 2 is a must own for every Xbox 360 owner. Despite a few minor missteps in the way the story and action play out, and a few forgivable technical blemishes, Gears of War 2 is about as close as you can get to the perfect gaming package. Now the waiting begins for 3.
Middle East Gamers (MEgamers)
Gears of War 2 is what you should be playing right now. PC or console gamer it does not matter, this is something you have to experience at one point during your lifetime. So do it, FAST!
Game Over Online
Bigger, better, more badass? Yes, yes, and hell yes! Gears of War 2 delivers on every one of its promises, combining a rich and intimate story, brutal, visceral combat, incredible graphics, outstanding audio design, a strong soundtrack, and a robust multiplayer suite. Quite simply, Gears of War 2 is one of the best games you’ll play on your Xbox 360 this or any year.
A sequel Epic definitely should be proud of, being this the main ‘arc’ in the story it definitely leaves a hell of a lot of questions, some raised in G2, and some remaining from Gears 1. A game not only for the Gears fans but those still to come. Gears of War 2, definitely the game to watch out for this Christmas season!
To conclude, then. Reviewing Gears of War 2 feels slightly redundant because it's a game of so much quality and finesse it basically sells itself. And for anyone that slips through the cracks, Microsoft's humungous advertising campaign will surely bring them up to speed. It's not a game that fails to live up to expectations, though, and manages to confidently strut its stuff in the limelight. I pity the developers that have to release their games around the same period as this, because Gears of War 2 is magnificent.
Gears of Wars 2 is what epic masterpieces are made of and on top of that it raises the bar for all action games on the Xbox 360. It’s an over-the-top, action junkie’s dream come true that easily surpasses the much-loved original that still haunts the dreams of all Xbox owners. In other words, Gears of War 2 definitely should be on the very top of your Must Have list.
Lens of Truth
Hands down, Gears of War 2 is the best looking game for any console this generation. With only a few minor issues to iron out, Gears of War 2 is one of the most enjoyable games on the market.
Overall, Gears of War 2, like it’s predecessor, is a superb game. While the formula may have changed, most, if not all, will agree that it has changed for the better. The game offers endless amounts of gameplay, from the co-op campaign to the seven competitive multi-player modes and Horde, Gears of War veterans and novices alike are guaranteed to find something they’ll love.
What Epic accomplished here was a cliché, but notoriously difficult to execute feat: they took a title and kept it familiar, but addressed issues that everyone whined about the first time around. And then they beefed up the gameplay, story, visuals and online modes. And just to take it even further, they intensified the gaming experience and gave the sequel a good helping of its own identity. How many sequels in games or movies can do that? You can count them on two hands - maybe. Gears of War 2 has surpassed its predecessor to make it a standout title that will please fans and newcomers alike.
If GOW2 were a movie sequel, it would be in the realms of Godfather 2 and as far away as you could get from the likes of Highlander 2 (worst sequel ever). The guys at Epic Games under Cliff Bleszinksi have delivered a game that is true to GOW while advancing the series in a manner that recalibrates what any sequel should be, a genuine evolution of a gaming series. Epic Games could have so easily capitalised on the success of GOW and delivered GOW 1.5, Gears with just a little bit more, but that is not the case. GOW2 is a logical progression that plays and feels just right. The creativity, ingenuity and effort that must have gone into refining this new experience and getting the balance just right is evident and GOW2 will consequently achieve a cult status all by itself, just as its older brother did. Simply put, if you own an Xbox 360, you must own this game.
It’s an understatement to say Gears of War 2 is the epitome of action. This game defines the genre. Gears of War 2 is one of the highlights of the year, and for all Xbox 360 owners, this deserves to be in your collection.
That Cliff Bleszinski and his crew have taken one of the most beloved Xbox 360 titles and managed to improve on it in every discernable way is nothing short of remarkable. It may not be the evolutionary leap forward for action games that its predecessor was, but rather a logical extension of the groundbreaking original. Not only does Gears of War 2 come highly recommended, but it’s easily one of the best games of the year. Rev up that chainsaw and join the battle against the Locust horde -- Marcus Fenix says you won’t regret it.
There’s not much more to say than if you love shooters, you need Gears of War 2. It is what the original should have been and makes you excited for the inevitable sequel. And yes, there will no doubt be a sequel – stick around after the credits and you’ll see what I mean. In the interim, be prepared to waste countless hours chainsawing your buddies online in one of the best console shooters on the market.
GOW 2 has to be one of the most violent and adrenalin pumping games I have played in a long time, each factor pieces so well together, story, sound, action, online, they all gel to make a true masterpiece. Halo is no longer the Xbox’s jewel in the crown, GOW is the must have game for your noisy grey beast.
MS Xbox World
Blood and guts aside, there's something very special about the way Gears 2 plays that will just lure you in, and keep you coming back for more. Yes, popping your enemies head off with the Longshot Sniper is most certainly addictive, but it's just the fluidity in the motion, the sound of the head popping off and the quick squirt of blood before your enemies body stumbles to the floor. That's one scenario of an example of what Gears of War 2 is all about. It's simply the gameplay, graphics and sound all being at an incredibly high level and it all seemingly complimenting one another to create one of the most satisfying sci-fi/action experiences currently available in gaming.
The biggest must-own Xbox 360 game of the year. The Halo franchise may still be playing out on the Xbox 360, but its Epic and the Gears of War franchise that are shaping the console's identity and legacy.
Official XBox Magazine
Highs and lows dot Gears 2’s uneven campaign, while its multiplayer complement raises the bar for all other contenders on 360. Funny — we remember saying the same things about Halo 2 back in 2004. To be fair, Gears 2 could’ve certainly done a lot worse than to fall into the same patterns as a game as successful as Halo 2, but we hope Epic’ll redraw some of the plans for the inevitable conclusion to its trilogy.
Gears of War 2 is a perfect example of blending game and art. An engrossing plot with emotion and battles on an absolute huge scale make this simply an experience that needs to be had by any gamer.
Gears of War 2 is a title that I entered into with caution given that I was not wholly captivated by the first. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoyed the original but I was not 100% as hooked as I had hoped. Gears 2 has taken everything that the original did well and added some pretty good improvements making it a well rounded package. From the great graphics, phenomenal sound, to the engrossing and addicting gameplay, both offline and online, Gears 2 has managed to slap me in the face and remind me that there are some really good games out there. And if this is not enough to make you want it I have two words that should: HORDE MODE. Now go out and save humanity once again.
If you haven?t figured it out by now, Gears of War 2 is what?s going to sell Xbox 360s this holiday season. It has non-stop action, fresh gameplay, varied environments, an engrossing storyline, multiplayer that will have people busy for years to come, and some of the nastiest and coolest kills I?ve seen in a videogame. It has its flaws when it comes to the technical side of multiplayer and the last act of the campaign and the voice acting might turn some off. Still, none of that comes close to holding back Gears of War 2 from its destiny: being one of the best games available on the Xbox 360.
It's not absolutely perfect, it's fairly similar to the first game, and it can be boiled down to a simple war game about killing aliens. But Gears of War 2 delivers on all its promises and accomplishes almost everything a big sequel should--keeping its distinct identity while buffing up in every possible category. Unless you're already a confirmed hater or have absolutely no interest in ripping locust apart with some of gaming's most badass weaponry, don't think twice.
It isn’t a perfect ride, of course, sometimes the AI can stand a foot away and ignore you when you’ve been downed and you’re groveling for their help, and while the game doesn’t end before it begins like the previous outing, we still found ourselves wanting more – but some may view that as a positive point rather than a negative. Whichever way you turn it, Gears of War 2 is a must buy, blockbuster title that is chock full of fun and electrolytes, which is what action junkies crave.
The subterranean menace has crawled back to surface one more time as the Gears of War ads another cog to its war machine. Gears of War 2 is a darker and larger experience then the first game which will please all the gamers looking for a “bigger and better” version of the original. Gears of War 2 showcases what the shooter genre is all about and it seems when the Chief takes a year off, Marcus Fenix comes in to push the sales and keep the 360 on the top of the food chain. Microsoft has found a winner in exclusively signing Gears of War to their entourage. Gears of War 2 opens its own emergence hole that we are more than happy to jump down. If you are a fan of action games, or the original Gears of War, Gears of War 2 is a must have this holiday season.
With an explosive single player, improved multiplayer, and an all-around polished feel, Gears of War 2 is better than the original by a large margin. Although the matchmaking system could use some work, the overall feel of the game is one of superior quality. Fans of the first will no doubt enjoy Gears of War 2’s additions while new players will find the wide variety enough to keep coming back for more.
Computer and Video Games (CVG)
Epic's delivered the most action-packed shooter of 2008 and a story worth taking seriously. This is grown up Gears.
Gears of War 2 manages to be everything that the sequel to an intense, violent shooter should be. The single player might be short, but it offers such a great, huge experience from start to finish that a second playthrough upon completion is likely. Add on a great online multiplayer portion and one heck of a mode in Horde and you’ve got yourself a damn nice package. Rest assured this is not Gears of War 1.5; this is a game that gives even the top titles released this year a run for their money. Be ready for a second round of frantic bone crushing and blood inducement.
Gears of War 2 is a fantastic game, with an epic campaign, incredible Horde co-op experience, and improved multiplayer; all in a package that promises to keep players entertained for dozens, if not hundreds of hours. Several issues keep the game from being all it could be, but it remains a worthy addition to any 360 owner's library.
Game Informer Magazine
Gears of War 2 evolves from its impressive predecessor in every sense of the word. The sequel features better narrative pacing, deeper multiplayer options, and larger set-piece battles than the original. While the gameplay may lack revolutionary innovation, and the major plot twist failed to inspire shock or excitement, I can’t deny the polish and refinement that oozes from every exit wound. Gears of War 2 is the Ferrari of gory action shooters, a ride everyone should take at least once. The high-octane story campaign delivers water-cooler worthy thrills, and the great co-op Horde multiplayer mode will keep die-hard score seekers battling Locust waves well into 2009. Gears may not rewrite the book, but the artistry of its execution makes it a powerful experience.
Simply put, if you don’t have Gears of War 2 already, then it needs to be on your holiday wishlist. Gears of War 2 is one of the best buys for Xbox 360 owners, and the replay value is the best you’ll find on the market. Do yourself a favor, if you don’t own Gears of War 2 already, ask that guy in the red suit with the beard to stop playing his copy and get to work on yours this holiday season.
Wer also den Vorgänger mochte, wird Gears of War 2 lieben.
So where does this leave us? Gears 2 aimed high and when I read the first reactions after the release I thought Epic Games really nailed it. After playing it myself for hours I must revise my initial thoughts… at least a bit. While they took the multiplayer department from Gears 1 and turned it into what is undoubtedly the best multiplayer shooter on any console at this point, Epic Games did not succeed to deliver what many hoped for in the campaign. Don’t get me wrong, Gears of War 2 raises the bar for action shooters and will be hard to match but it does not seem impossible. By any standard this is a great game but it had the opportunity to be a brilliant one that would have known no equal for years to come.
From escort missions to turret set-pieces and the token dumbed-down driving sequence, Gears 2 has it all, but little else. Strip away the gloss and magnificent production values, sumptuous cinematic presentation and top quality AI, you’re left with a by-the-numbers shooter. While that doesn’t prevent Gears of War 2 from being one of the biggest, most thrilling and visually spectacular games of the year, the lack of any substantial creative expansion means you’re unlikely to feel as captivated as you were by the original. Unless, of course, you really do believe bigger means better.
In the end, Gears of War 2 achieves exactly what it sets out to do: make a better Gears of War. It's an accomplishment worthy of praise, but knowing what Epic is capable of, we really wish they would have pushed the envelope a bit more on the campaign mode. The multiplayer is a nice step forward and nearly worth the price of admission on its own, but the campaign ultimately feels like more of the same, just prettier and shinier. If you loved the original, you're going to eat this one up, but if Gears of War wasn't quite your bag, the sequel isn't going to win you over.
Ultimately, Gears of War 2 doesn't reinvent the wheel, but it does bring a good bit of polish to the concepts that made the first such a success. If you're not a hardcore fan and don't ever plan on going on Live for multiplayer, then consider it a rental. The campaign is short enough to get through in a weekend and there isn't a whole lot of replay in the story mode. If multiplayer is your bag, however, Gears of War 2 is where it's at. Expect to see this one dominating your Live friends list over the next few months.
I'm hesitant to say that if you have modest (read: realistic) expectations for Gears 2 the game will be as satisfying for you as the first if not more so. Conversely, if you're hoping for something epic or monumental (like, for example, MGS4 or Mass Effect; two games that still managed to blow my insanely high expectations out of the water), you may be slightly disappointed. That said, it's important to note that the only reason I'm saying this is to keep your standards in check - Gears 2 is by all measure a must-have title for the Xbox 360.
Gears of War 2 takes the formula established by the original and polishes it to great effect. Everything from the pacing of the campaign, tuned difficulty, added weapons and enemies, and slew of multiplayer options demonstrates mastery in design that all action games aspire, yet precious few achieve. Not everything is rosy--chalk the poor story and lame characters as being yet another victim of cheesy game writing. That's excusable, though. What you get for putting up with the one-liners and cowboy hats is one hell of a ride.
The pacing is pretty awesome throughout once you get into it, and the boss-battles this time around are pretty inventive and memorable. The game still suffers from a few problems from the first game (control issues, too many on-rails moments etc), but these can be overlooked in the face of mindless fun. It's also a title I can't stress enough that needs to be played with a friend cooperatively. There's fun to be had here on your own, but there's nothing better than competing with a friend to reach a downed Grub for some Curb Stomping action.
Probably the important thing is that Gears fans will be very satisfied, and definitely not disappointed. It was never going to be as revolutionary as the first – but it is a better game. 9/10
GBase - The Gamer's Base
In fact, it’s safe to say that the entire product takes that same baton and moves Gear up a few… er… gears by expanding upon the story, padding out what were slightly hollow characters and adding a few well-placed changes to keep the thing feeling familiar but fresh. With the added bonus of a compulsive multiplayer offering heaped on top, it’d be a surprise if that little grey disc with the stained red front you have spinning its way around the inside of your 360 wasn’t a regular fixture until the concluding episode in the trilogy is released. Colour me one pleasantly surprised critic.
Gears of War 2 is finally out. The painstaking wait is finally over. Through all that time, we have been rewarded with what will easily compete for the Game of the Year title. It's unquestionable. Gears of War 2 is so full of... well, everything you can imagine. It's hard not to become enthralled in what is an exhilarating ride that will keep you on the edge of your seat for a long, long time... or at least until you have to go to the bathroom. But, you'll come back. You'll always will. Gears of War 2 is too awesome not to play again and again.
Yes, there’s plenty of content there, and while the issues about the campaign structure are important, and perhaps some of the cover placement in said campaign seems a little too coincidentally placed to help you, Gears of War 2 is immense fun, and will entertain you from start to finish. It’s not hard to recommend the game to fans of the series, but Horde is enough for many others (perhaps fans of Left 4 Dead) to dip in and see what all of the fuss is about. Probably grab a cheap copy of the original too, just to catch up. Let’s just hope that when developer Epic sits in their studio counting their money and deciding on what could happen in Gears 3 they consider that it’s not just the story that needs a satisfying conclusion.

If the multiplayer issues can get fixed via a patch and decent match finding provided, then this is seriously going to be a game that people continue to play well into next year. As it is, the online experienced is slightly soured if you don't live in the US, or you have some mega awesome internet connection that defies the laws of physics. That said, Gears of War 2 is the perfect blockbuster sequel. It improves on the original in almost every way, and maintains its legitimacy with an engaging and lengthy single player story. If you fancy yourself as any kind of serious gamer, this is a title that you need in your collection.
In conclusion, the millions of Gears of War fans will undoubtedly be thrilled by the sequel. The combination of fantastic graphics, gameplay, and storyline have made this one a winner whether online play is your thing or you plan to conquer the Locusts on your own after unlocking the Insane difficulty setting. If you plan to blast away online foes until the wee hours of the morning, rest assured that aside from a little waiting during match creation, there are devoted fans (new and old) for you to dismember for a long, long time. Gears of War 2 has earned the designation of instant classic and deserves a place in your game library.
Gears of War 2 improves in every area over its blockbuster predecessor, delivering a solid and engaging storyline that goes far deeper than gamers will expect. Throw into that with an expanded multiplayer that will no doubt rule the roost of the Xbox Live most popular list for months to come, and Gears 2 rightly becomes an essential Xbox 360 title.
Above all else, this game is immensely enjoyable. Whether we're on a turret, fighting a boss or watching a cut scene, Almost everything about Gears of War 2, from the graphic dismemberment to the high production values make it better than most action games, and you'd be crazy not to experience it, so grab that Lancer and jump into battle. The human race needs you.
Like the original, on one level, Gears 2 is a brilliant advertisement for Unreal Engine 3, glorying in soft-body physics, glinting textures, and massive explosions. Even after a year of non-stop eye candy, Epic's series provides some of the most fiercely pretty visuals you'll get the chance to look at, even if its world is so charmingly ugly. Yet on another level, the game's a calling card from a developer that continues to mature in design as well as technology. The first game slowed down the crazy pace of Unreal Tournament - forcing you into using the environment every bit as much as the weapon-set - and the sequel continues to build on that with ease, but alongside the bare mechanics, Gears of War 2 shows a new interest in stories and varying the action. Best of all, it has the native intelligence to bring both aspects together.

Hollywood, your days are numbered. Our only suggestion is that Epic Games takes some Ritalin before starting Gears of War 3; otherwise there's a very real possibility that the excitement is going to kill us.
Gears of War 2 has a lot in common with its predecessor, but the new environments, darker storyline, and epic scale certainly have a lot to offer fans. The new weapons, melee attacks, and co-op options make for a campaign that you'll want to complete a number of times, and the new multiplayer modes give the game variety and longevity. Simply put, Gears of War 2 is a superior shooter that no action fan will want to miss out on.

The title’s relentless immaturity can grate after a while, though. Gruesome executions and grunted, testosterone-soaked dialogue sloppily plaster over the campaign’s heavy-handed morality play. While the plot makes sense this time around, its clumsy mysteries are old hat to anyone moderately well read in science fiction. Still, finding bad things to say about Gears of War 2 is like trying to hate on the ‘07 Patriots. The game is impeccably engineered to dominate everything it sets its sights on, and yet ultimately falls short of achieving true immortality. Still, there isn’t a game out there that can compete with Gears on its home turf. The bombastic co-op action, impressive presentation, and unique multiplayer will thrill gamers as well if not better than the latest indie thought piece. Popcorn it may be, but Gears of War 2 is delicious nonetheless.
As I said earlier, Gears of War 2 improves on the first one in every way. The story is bigger and better told; the action is heavier and even more exciting. The controls are a lot tighter. While you still use the A button for everything (running, diving, sticking to cover etc) it just feels a lot more polished, and you won't find yourself accidentally getting stuck to cover anywhere as often as you would have in the first game. Epic really outdid themselves and delivered a better experience than the first game managed, which is no small feat considering the first was a pretty wicked experience in itself.

Gears of War was one of the very best games of 2006 and Gears of War 2 is one of the best titles in 2008. The combat is fun and accessible, the gore is over-the-top, and the story's spiked with humor (though not always intended) and provides for a non-stop, action-packed thrill ride. Still, whereas the original title was groundbreaking, GoW 2 is simply a honed, rehashed sequel. As such, players who were unimpressed by the first entry will likely not enjoy this game either. Fortunately, Gear-Heads and those who just want to grind through some great environments packing heat and take out baddies in a font of gore are in for a treat!
While Gears of War 2 might not include the epic changes we were all waiting for, like 4 player co-op and a larger storyline, it certainly provides us with a fun and enjoyable experience that we will all remember. Wasting hours on Horde is amazing and with the new additions to the game, new and old fans will be chuffed. Let's just hope Epic were keeping all the 'epic' changes for the third instalment of Gears of War.
Gears of War 2 is almost the epitome of a videogame sequel. It offers essentially the same gameplay experience as before, and yet at the same time it has been improved and expanded in almost every aspect. The shallow storytelling can’t mask the superbly tight gunplay that underpins this title, and the online options will guarantee that this game has a robust multiplayer community until the inevitable release of Gears of War 3.

Overall this is another fantastic title from Epic and it definitely lived up to the hype. The A.I. in this title is also very impressive. The Locust will lull you into a false sense of security and then pounce on you when you are least expecting it. If you are trying to line up a shot with your sniper rifle, chances are they won't stick their heads out so you can shoot them. Your ally A.I. is smarter too as there were a few times where I was taken out by a Locust, only to be saved by Baird as he ran over to revive me. The storyline is much more immersive and fulfilling. It is a great feeling whether you are going through the campaign with a friend or taking on waves of enemies with a group of your buddies. The environments are really varied so there shouldn’t be much of a “déjà vu” sentiment among gamers. You also get to drive more vehicles in this game which help to change up the pacing. Gears of War 2 is a hell of a ride and one everyone must experience.

Something of an anathema unto itself, Gears 2 offers more gore, more cursing and more of the stereotypical Space Marine swagger only a compulsive gamer can tolerate. Were Epic trying to get their own product banned? With a better campaign, bigger bosses and bringing greater depth to its own war strewn universe we can be thankful that didn't happen. Everyone on my friends list is playing it. If you own a 360 why aren't you?
Gears of War 2 is a game that actually accomplishes what most sequels strive to do, which is to be better than their predecessors in every way possible. Gears 2 is a thrilling experience that does all the right things. It has an engaging shooting mechanic, excellent presentation, and a hard-hitting demeanor that both excites and delivers. The multiplayer mode will easily keep you engaged for many months to come. The only things that really halts this game’s momentum are the AI bugs and lackluster story. But those things really wash away when confronted with the total package that is this game.
Gears of War 2 is a fantastic game, building off the original and creating an amazing experience for fans of the series. There’s little to draw in people who weren’t interested in the first, and many of the glitches from GoW remain (namely the texture pop-in, which is reduced but noticeable). To answer the question posed in the beginning of the review, there’s enough content to consider it a true sequel, and not an incremental upgrade, and it’s an overall better game. The expanded story and new multiplayer modes confirm the purchase, and for fans there’s no way to avoid something this good during the holiday season.
While Gears of War 2 bears significant improvements over the series' debut, it doesn't quite go the distance. The visuals are spectacular, the sound is awesome, the weapons and combat features are great and there's enough new stuff to keep both fans and newbies happy. Nonetheless, in terms of gameplay, Gears of War 2 hasn't moved the series forward yet, which should undoubtedly be their goal for the next installment.
Gears of War 2 is quite a ride, and once you’re done with the single player story you’ve still got the new Horde mode to play, not to mention a wealth of options in multiplayer (which we’ve covered in detail already). It’s well worth the price of admission, in other words; just don’t expect the perfect shooter. Epic made a lot of good calls with Gears 2, but one can’t help but think that the team is still honing its level design, its pacing, its combat and its storytelling. Should be one hell of a third installment.

Gears of War 2 might not be returning with anything entirely new to show off, but it is still as heart pumping and testosterone inducing as it always has been. This is an essential purchase if you've been missing run, duck and cover lessons.
I don’t know, maybe I was expecting something else. Maybe I was holding out for a more “serious” and “mature” play experience, and I got the exact opposite. Gears of War slapped me across the face multiple times, and kept my jaw on the floor on numerous occasions. It made buying an Xbox360 a smart decision, because I haven’t played anything similar on a console before. Gears of War 2 doesn’t pack the same punch however, and I kinda wanted more. Is it worth buying? Definitely. Is it better than the first? That’s debatable.
We’re seeing these publisher bullying tactics more and more lately. By trying to control the media and only releasing promotional footage, anyone would think Microsoft doesn’t have faith in their game. But the truth is, it’s a bloody decent game! I'm giving it 8.5/10

Even though Gears of War 2 is very close follow-up to the original blockbuster, it has made a number of the necessary additions and improvements that make it a better experience overall. The campaign is a wild ride with some amazing sites and sounds, while the multiplayer experience promises to be everything that the original provided and more. While not as ‘new’ as the original, and with what seems to be a disappointing lack of polish, what with the minor glitches that have crept in, there aren’t many other experiences that will come out over this holiday period that will provide the same intensive ride that could only be pulled off by a skilled developer such as Epic. Unless you really didn’t like the scheme from the last game, Gears of War 2 is one of the most viscerally enjoyable experiences you're likely to have this holiday season.
Armchair Empire, The
Gears of War 2 is a very good action game and Epic Games has taken full advantage of the groundwork laid by the original, by mixing up the enemies, the locales and even making story an actual component of the game rather than an afterthought. For an action fix, particularly Horde mode, Gears of War 2 is recommended.
By necessity, Gears of War 2 shares many similarities with its predecessor, but don’t mistake it for Gears 1.5. The multiplayer additions alone earn it sequel status, and Horde mode makes it worth buying. Gears 2 is one of the most enjoyable sequels I’ve played this year, from the continuing story mode to co-op campaign and multiplayer. Pick up this game and round up some friends—Gears of War 2 is this year’s multiplayer experience.

I have to hold my hands up now though and admit that, yes, I was having fun all the way through. And that was just the single-player: in co-op the game is absolutely brilliant. Despite all the niggles and frustrations and the deep feeling that Epic aren’t really pushing the boat out in any area, other than the graphical capabilities of their Unreal Engine, I still enjoyed myself.
Gears 2’s singleplayer campaign leaves a hell of a lot to be desired. To be less kind, it falls flat on its ass and sucks pretty hard. Much like the first Gears, Gears 2 offers a teeming variety of environments like gray cityscapes, brown forests, gray caves, red caves, and brownish-reddish cityscapes. To make things even more visually exciting, Epic decided to mix shit up a bit by tossing in a few shades of blue here and there. So now, instead of the generic, exciting gray cave you have the generic, exciting gray cave with blue plant thingies growing on the ground.
