Overall, I found Alex Kidd in the Enchanted Castle to be a charming platform game with few flaws. It’s easy to control, you get a lot of items to play with, it’s not too short, and it is quite addictive. Graphically, it is different to say the least, but it's great in its simplicity and has relatively decent music.

Enchanted Castle is just as cute, if not more so, than Alex's previous adventures, but all this does is cover up the lack of gameplay. The game soon boils down to a run-of-the-mill beat-'em-up, and even the addition of one of he most ancient games known to man doesn't really help the gameplay, which soon wears thin. It's the kind of game that you wouldn't mind receiving but would think twice about buying.

I considered how much fun this game would be if Janken was removed altogether. Whether it's swimming (Alex does it all) and punching the tentacles off an octopus, taking out aircraft in your Pedicopter, or building an airtight case for the prosecution for vehicular homicide on your motorbike, there's plenty to do and see thanks to the good level design and brilliant items at your hands. Without the paper-scissors-rock routine, it would be a bit too easy, despite the great and incongruous length and difficulty of the final level, but it wouldn’t make you mad, and you’d easily be able to stomach the dodgy collision detection and horrid ending sequence. Yes, the adventuring ingredients are that engaging. But the Janken element isn’t going anywhere, and to speak to your probable progress in Enchanted Castle: neither are you.

Alex Kidd in the Enchanted Castle is simply a despicable game. I... I don't even want to look at it anymore! It's so wretched! Awful controls, substandard programming, and mediocre graphics and sound all add up to one thing, and it belongs in its rightful place in a brown paper bag set on fire on a stranger's doorstep. And to make matters worse, most of the game wasn't even set IN an enchanted castle! It was torture to play to the very end, and I will never do it again, this I swear. If it's any consolation, the series only had one further game before it was brought to an immediate halt, only to replaced with the far superior Sonic the Hedgehog. Alex Kidd is now relegated to cameos in Sega All-Stars games and living in Sega's dingy basement for all eternity. So long, Alex Kidd — stay gone.
