The Video Game Critic
You can't help but love this game. This is the kind of quality title that put Genesis over the top in the early 90s. The beautiful graphics, animation, and music are pure Disney. You control Mickey Mouse trying to rescue Minnie in this fun platform action adventure. Mickey can pounce on enemies or throw apples at them. The highly imaginative stages range from an enchanted forest to a huge toy room. Each offers its own unique challenges, and there are surprises around every corner. While Castle of Illusion is perfect for kids, it's also challenging enough to keep adults interested. It may be a bit short compared to modern games, but considering there is no save option (only continues) that's probably for the best.

Disney produce quality - and magic - with whatever they do. This game is of a quality rarely seen: the programmers obviously took a great deal of care with this game. The backgrounds are phenomenal, with the best parallax scrolling yet seen on the Megadrive. The sprites are gorgeous too; Mickey himself is the best, with a range of facial expressions and and poses that put other "cute" characters to shame. When Mickey's close to the edge of a platform, he sways and panics. but doesn't quite fall - just scaring seven hells out of the player! Of course what really makes this game special is the playability which is absolutely outstanding. We recommend games all the time, but Mickey is truly an excellent product, well worth £35.

If you're not a Disney fan or abhor all things cute, you'll probably stay far away from this title. I would recommend it anyway on its platforming merits alone. It's fun, the length is just right, and it's cheap. Anyone who likes Mickey Mouse will eat this up with a spoon. I had as almost as much fun playing this game now as I did when I first booted it up so many years ago. Mickey still looks sharp after all this time and still manages to make me smile. That's what he does best, and nobody does it better.

The hopping perils were plenty, and great gimmicks like the reversal of gravity and changing level structure kept things interesting. It was a bit on the linear side, but all the components of a great platformer were there. Mario's the man and Sonic is slammin', but don't miss the mouse!

Still, if you have access to both, play them both. And if you own a Genesis, and want a cutesy side-scroller, pick up Castle of Illusion (it won’t cost you much) and prepare for an enchanting, good looking - and sounding - ride. Younger children will undoubtedly be enthralled by Mickey’s magic, as well as the 'secrets' scattered here and there. For them, the lack of immediacy and intensity will be welcome omissions. Old folks: for best results, play the game on the hardest difficulty level, though that still won’t bring about the intensity that is absent.

All Game Guide
Like most video games based on Disney characters, Castle of Illusion‹Starring Mickey Mouse is a success. It's not as good as Capcom's The Magical Quest Starring Mickey Mouse for the Super Nintendo, but it is always cute, sometimes clever, and usually entertaining.

Castle of Illusions may not have the best of sounds, but Capcom has at least tried to do something good inside the game. There are well done nuances of sound that play in each level. Little bits of musical score that give the game just a taste at what could have been. The sound effects are fairly simple as well seeing as there is not an extreme range of them for Mickey or the enemies either. One sound effect I, oddly, enjoyed is that of Mickey's ears hitting the ceiling when he jumps. A simple thud clunk that just made my day. I am a simple man, and found myself hitting poor Mickey's head on just about everything to hear that noise over and over again.

Interface
