The levels themselves are ingeniously put together, with wide, scrolling paths - many with alternate routes. During your adventure, you'll see guillotines, black holes, and space debris. The bosses are a sight to behold, their anime-inspired forms filling nearly the entire screen. All of this is achieved with no slow-down. Woo-hoo! Gaiares is a shooter masterpiece, and well worth the search.

Interestingly enough, if you beat her, your typically heroic and dashing anime hero—complete with Rick Hunter haircut—will walk off toward some sort of docking bay. You’ll notice he keeps walking, his arms working, his legs striding with all the effort in the world, but he doesn’t recede into the distance. He doesn’t get anywhere. While you shooter jockeys should enjoy putting in the effort with Gaiares, this might end up being you.

Player One

I love shooters. Always have, and since there seems to be very few being made anymore (we need more fighting games! PLEASE!), one must head back to the not so distant past to gain shooter relief. Gaiares ranks up there as one of the most fun and most difficult shooters on the Genesis. The easily frustrated need not apply, but if you can hang, a fun experience awaits.

The attractive layered backgrounds are constantly changing. One moment you'll be hurling through a cloudy atmosphere at break-neck speeds, and the next you'll been navigating the tight corridors of icebergs bobbing in water. Your attackers aren't particularly memorable, but like the backgrounds, they come in a wide variety. The bosses are formidable, and most resemble screen-sized humanoids. The weak spot of the first one is his crotch, which makes a heck of lot of sense if you think about it. The adrenaline-pumping soundtrack is outstanding, and anime cut-scenes are used to flesh out a background story. Gaiares is surprisingly long, and although several continues are provided, you'll probably need a cheat code to reach the end.

I think the graphics and animation on this title are fantastic. I also like the control scheme, including the way your AI robot moves in relation to your ship. The sounds are decent, somewhat instructive and mostly unobtrusive.

Retrogaming History

IGN
Gaiares is an excellent shooter that has aged quite well since the sunset of the Genesis. The TOZ system of stealing weapons is an engaging idea that adds dimension to what would have been otherwise a merely "good shooter." If you are assembling a Genny collection and fancy a bit of galactic thumb-numbing, Gaiares is a smart acquisition.

The difficulty's probably one of the reasons why this game never got as popular as it should've (that and America always seemed to ignore Telnet/Renovation. Pity.) Shooter fans will see the influence that this placed upon the modern day Playstation shoot-em-up Einhander, in both the similar weapon system and gameplay. But with enough practice and a good temper, you'll probably find a lot to like in Gaiares.

Power Play
