There's a way to fight the Prince of Darkness (the game's final boss) twice. Should you manage to defeat him for a second time you get to see the game's proper ending (in which you take the Golden Axe and true peace is obtained). The key to getting to fight the Prince twice is performing very well during the regular game. Although I'm not sure when you perform well enough, you should be safe if you manage to complete the game using only a single credit. The route you take through the game or the number of heroes you free from their curse don't seem to matter.
