Unfortunately, certain levels tend to have maze-like layouts which are mildly annoying. My advice for playing Rambo 3? Hold down the C button and shoot like a freakin' madman, even when nobody's in sight (they will be soon). As icing on the cake, Rambo 3 also incorporates some truly impressive bonus rounds where you face off against a tank and helicopter. The controls offer a nice balance of risk and reward, and that looming helicopter looks amazing! Another interesting aspect of Rambo 3 is how the prisoner in mission 2 looks exactly like Rutger Hauer. And he wasn't even in the movie! The fine musical score suggests excitement and intrigue, and it has that unmistakable Genesis twang that we all love. A two-player mode is included, but it's alternating turns only. For Rambo fans in the mood for chaos, this fine shooter is right on target.

Rambo III is an absolute blast to play, and it's one of the first video games based on a movie that I remember to be good. It's not just good, it's great, and I don't know if this game was made to cash in on a movie franchise, but the finished product is not shovelware by any means. It's a polished game, and while it's an action game among a few other action games released at the launch of the Genesis, I feel it's a much different action game with its own style.

Mean Machines
Not being a huge fan of the jingoistic films, I wasn't expecting much from this game. Although it's not stunning, it's not bad either. I found it in parts similar to Ikari Warriors or even Commando, with its eight-way scrolling and blobby bullets. The additional stages - like the helicopter attack - add a great deal to the game, and the intro screens are excellent. The difficulty is pitched just about right, and I was impressed by the general feel of the game. It takes a while to learn how to use the different weapons, but once you've mastered them you'll be stompin' Commie ass all over the shop!

Power Play

Rambo III is brainless machismo, but that's half the fun here. It's a fairly short adventure spanning only six levels, so that really cuts into the game's overall value. However, considering you cans core a cart now for significantly less than you could in 1989, it's still worth the pick-up for Genesis owners and action game fans.

Electronic Gaming Monthly (EGM)
Rambo 3 isn't a large game, but what it does contain is done very well. Each of the rounds give you a different objective, and the multiple weapons help spice up the killing mayhem. The bonus rounds look very good, as do the digitized pix, but the smaller 2-Meg size of the game hurts it slightly.
