The game is tough - you may find yourself trashing the cart. But the rush you get from completing a mission is incredible! If you're in the market for a challenge, head off into the Red Zone.

Sega-16.com
Red Zone has exceptional graphics, tight controls, and innovative gameplay. The only real drawback is its length - it's just too short to be able to fully enjoy the wealth of fun the game has to offer. Then again, I suppose that's what replays are for, right? The final assessment is that the game succeeds at all levels and is yet another must-buy for the Genesis.

Kingdom of Desire

This firefight is fierce, but even though the fly-and-die action's primo, the character controls kill you. Red Zone may zone you out.

Video Games & Computer Entertainment
While it isn't as good as the Jungle Strike series of games (it lacks their sense of humor, their versatility and their completely addictive gameplay) Red Zone is an able and decent addition to the helicopter games sub-genre. If you're a fan, check it out (and try to find the hidden Asteroids game!).

Electronic Gaming Monthly (EGM)
A difficult action game with a top-down perspective that takes some getting used to. Both the combat and aerial sequences are innovative and enjoyable with plenty of weapons to use and missions to complete.

Scaling effects attempt to convey the height of land structures, but these are not very convincing. I had to repeat the second mission about eight times before I realized there was a "doorway" in the fence of an enemy fort. There are times when the game orders you to perform certain actions immediately, but you have no clue of what it's talking about. Red Zone involves more trial and error than skill. The "on foot" sections are slightly better because they're easier to navigate and you have two characters in reserve. Your soldier can fire a machine gun, throw grenades, or plant explosives. Too bad he hobbles around like he has a gigantic pole up his butt. One thing Red Zone does have going for it is its thumping electronic soundtrack - it's edgy and relentless. But overall, this is a poorly executed shooter that most Genesis fans could live without.
