Description

Stimpy has invented a wondrous, diabolic machine... The Mutate-O-Matic! Unfortunately it explodes, and having pieces of a Mutate-O-Matic lying about is not a good thing. So Ren and Stimpy embark on an adventure that spans Mr. Horse's refrigerator, to the pound, and even... The Great Outdoors! References from the cartoon are frequent, coupled with lots of side-scrolling action.

Players can switch controls between Ren and Stimpy. Their respective abilities vary greatly, even though they tend to use each other for their moves (i.e. Stimpy uses Ren as a boomerang and Ren uses Stimpy as a bowling ball).

Another player can also jump in at anytime and play as either Ren or Stimpy.

OK if you like the show but a tad disappointing

The Good
When Ren and Stimpy was on our TV sets many years ago, it was the best cartoon on TV for years. It was about a smart dog (Ren) and a stupid cat (Stimpy) that lived with each other but didn't always get on well. They went on many cool adventures. Merchandise occurred in many places, and many video games were made. Enter 'Stimpy's Invention'. Not a game based on the episode of the same name, but it does borrow a few elements from many of the show's episodes.

The story is that Stimpy has created a new machine called the Mutate-O-Matic. However, after Stimpy shows Ren what it does it blows up into pieces. The pieces have been scattered around town, and Ren and Stimpy are out to find the pieces.

This is a simple, easy to pick up and play platform game. You control either Ren or Stimpy. When playing 1 player, the computer controls the other character. In 2 player, player 1 selects his/her character whilst player 2 is the other.

The characters are easy to control, and have a lot of funny attacks and signature moves that were put in just for a laugh. You can play as Ren and slap Stimpy, with Ren saying 'You stupid eediot!' in digitised speech! Stimpy's similar move is to make Ren belch (please note that these are NOT cheats!). This is very much the same humour as with the TV show, meaning that fans will not be disappointed.

The sound is also very good. The game hardly has problems playing the end credits theme tune of the TV show on the game's title screens.

This doesn't make it a good game though...

The Bad
The game is far too easy, even on hard mode which gives you 3 lives and a continue! It takes a long time to die as well.

It's also very short, with just five levels. They can get dull at times as well.

It's also badly programmed in some places.

The graphics were nothing special. Even ten years ago they were average.

The Bottom Line
If you like the show then buy it as cheap as you can, otherwise this isn't a very good game.
