Summary

One of few classic Horror games on a console

The Good

What sets this game apart from other games in the genre that had come out before it were two main things.

The first being that it was actually playable as most games of the Horror genre (Friday the 13th on NES for example) were lacking in the gameplay department.

Splatterhouse stuck to a familiar formula that can be seen in popular games such as Double Dragon and Final Fight and this makes it easy to jump in and play without having to figure out what the hell is going on. The second thing that set it apart from the other horror games released on console at the time were the graphics.

I have never been one to give huge credit to a game merely on the graphics because I personally believe that gameplay is the most important aspect, but I have to give credit where credit is due. The graphics in this game were awesome at the time (in fact I still think they rock) and create a great Horror atmosphere. From the rotting corpses of babies hanging from nooses to the strange transparent faces strobing in the background to deer heads that vomit green slime on to the floor I can honestly say that this is one of very few games where the graphics really helped to push it over the top.

The Bad

There is not much you can say that is wrong with this game except perhaps the gameplay is not original, but only if you are being extremely nit picky about it.

The Bottom Line

For fans of Horror, fans of beat um ups, fans of hack n slash, or just fans of video games. This is a game that demands to be played at least once.
