Super Fantasy Zone

Super Fantasy Zone will likely only truly appeal to fans of the franchise like myself, but I hope shooter freaks will take the time to seek it out on the Internet. It's well worth a purchase, as the game is both fun to play and fun to look at. Great music, great color, great control. I do hope SEGA pushes this one out on the Virtual Console so more gamers are exposed to the series.

I'm very pleased with my copy of Super Fantasy Zone and recommend it wholeheartedly. The PAL release is the way to go, as everything is in English, but a lack of knowledge of Japanese won't hinder you in the slightest if you buy that version. As shooters go, diehard fans of the genre might feel the action is a bit too slow. Once you adjust to the game's pace, however, you'll find that there's a great little shmup here that commands your attention.

Trotz des Sprungs in die 16-Bit-Liga wirkt Opa Opa nahezu unverändert; verwandte Grafik, identische Steuerung und der gleiche Mangel an spielerischen Gags und Finessen macht Super Fantasy Zone eher zu einer Umsetzung, denn zu einem echten Nachfolger. Sunsoft hat jedoch auch die guten Seiten in die Neuzeit herübergerettet: Das knallbunte Actionspektakel ist unkompliziert, aber trickreich; verwirrende Feindtaktiken und schlaue Endgegner fordern Einsteiger und Profis. Außerdem motivieren abgefahrene Comicgrafik und fetzige Musik - wer auf putzige Intro-Sequenzen und knuddlige Extrawaffen steht, sollte sich diese Defender-Variante besorgen.
