Toki: Going Ape Spit

Un autre point marquant du jeu c'est sa musique. Plus de 15 ans après j'ai encore le thème du jeu dans la tête. Cet air ne m'a jamais quitté, pourtant il n'a rien d'exceptionnel mais il colle tellement bien à l'ambiance de Toki que les images défilent toutes seules lorsque je l'entends. Par contre c’est le même tout au long de l’aventure, ça peut donc vite devenir saoulant. Toki n'est bien évidemment pas le meilleur shoot de la console, et ce n'est pas sa réalisation graphique ou l'animation très lente du personnage principal qui le sauveront. Pourtant je reste attaché à ce titre par son ambiance unique et désopilante ainsi que par son côté très technique. La moindre erreur est fatale et seul les plus patients en verront le bout.

That phrase pretty much sums up the Toki experience, actually. Toki is an under-appreciated gem that is still very enjoyable today, although ultimately outclassed by later offerings.

Toki ist ein Muster für ein besseres Durchschnittsspiel. Es reißt einen nicht vom Hocker, keine neuen Spielideen - alles schon mal da gewesen; aber trotzdem ist es nicht besonders schlecht. Grafisch und auch spielerisch nimmt Toki in den höheren Levels zu. Tatsächlich wurden die Original-Levels künstlich aufgeblasen und spielen sich wesentlich langatmiger. Allein die Kollisionsabfrage ist ein wenig zu pingelig. Explodiert beispielsweise eine Gigantowurzel, fliegen Erdstückchen durch die Gegend, von denen einige - manchmal - für Toki lebensnehmend sind. Im Zwei-Spieler-Modus tretet Ihr leider nicht gleichzeitig an, sondern nacheinander - schade!

With Sonic the Hedgehog on the Genesis in 1991, I am not sure what to make of Sega's decision to release what is essentially a port of a mediocre 1989 NES game. Maybe it was simply to expand the Genesis library or maybe it was a case of poor quality control. Whatever the case, Toki: Going Ape Spit never should have made it outside of the development studio. It is a poorly animated game in terms of graphics with limited length, pitiful AI and a lousy single tune that loops, which will drive you ape shit. Unless you are a die hard platforming fan or a collector, shy away from this one.
