Wings of Wor really is a magnificent shooter. The fact that it’s on the Genesis and not the Turbo CD only makes my head spin. It would have been right at home on NEC’s awesome add-on even if it doesn’t have any cinematic sequences. It does have six excellent levels, though, each fittingly tuned to the fine hum of outlandish musical scores. And it does have the penis. What more could you want in a shooter?

The game concept is remarkable only in the fact that it's exactly like virtually every other horizontally scrolling shoot 'em up - blast everything, power-up, beat end guardian, but it's packed with playability and sports some stunning graphics. The main sprite is a bit crummy, but some of the multi-layer parallax scrolling backgrounds, special effects and end-of-level baddies are absolutely superb. The extra weapons aren't amazing, but for fast action, excitement and, most important of all, a highly addictive challenge, this take some beating.

Wings of Wor’s drawn out levels would have made a lame shooter, just, well, lamer. But in a game this atmospheric, this gusty and garish, it weakens what should have been a completely robust and visceral experience — like watered down Kool-Aid, it’s stretched too thin. There is such a thing as too much of a good thing. As early on as the second level, you’ll be battling along and you’ll want to say: ”Hey guys, still here, underwater. Quite nice to start with, undeniably. Still here though. Still.” It’s not a great feeling. That being said, there is no overlooking how much of the truly rare, cold, hard stuff we get frothing up in our thankful glasses despite the unfortunate dilution.

Retrogaming History

This is a different type of shooter that doesn't become drawn-out or boring. The enemies are inventive and the round bosses are spectacular! having weapons that power-up 25 different times is great when facing bosses that take up more than one screen! This is a good solid game.

Wings of Wor is a different and unique game all it's own. It only bestows six levels, but they are rather long, each having a mini boss and end boss. The graphics say the setting nicely and provide solid detail, along with some cool effects. The music is alright... probably nothing that anyone will remember after a day or two, but it's not bad either. However, the sound effects could have used a little bit more spice. I am glad that a difficulty selection is available. It is recommend to immediately raise the level to at least Normal as not to breeze through it quickly or at least select Hard or Hyper for veteran gamers. This is probably the best part of playing Wings of Wor as the challenge of the game is the best feature, making it fun. Still, within some of it's borderline game elements, Wings of Wor is still a shooter that should not be completely forgotten. It's just cool enough by itself that it's a good game not to forget about as the years go by.
