Genewars

Always in search for innovation and originality, Bullfrog's development teams are often at the foremost of the industry, bringing new concepts with explosive graphics and outstanding game play almost every time. However with Genewars, Bullfrog doesn't introduce a radically different style of game, but rather takes the real-time strategy genre by storm. So what Genewars has, that the like of Command & Conquer and Warcraft II, the most two popular real-time strategy games, don't have?

Straight up, the bottom line on GeneWars is that it is a well-thought-out, well-designed game. Maybe it's not the most original premise, but Bullfrog did a lot to warm up an old theme. Just as they did with Populous, Bullfrog has given you the chance to play God, and have a lot of fun in the process. Because it is a very difficult game, I would not recommend it to those who are new to the strategy scene. But for those of you who can defeat Stalin with your eyes closed, and are fed up with Blizzard's orcs and ogres, take GeneWars for a spin and see if you can't wreak some ecologically friendly havoc in your own little corner of the universe. One other thing: If you do manage to finish the game, there's a little Secret Toy Surprise waiting for you after the 26th level. Good Luck!

Umiddelbart er Gene Wars enormt underholdende at spille. Grafikken er god, og lyden er stemningsfuld. Desværre mister det gnisten efter nogle få missioner, da styringen kan være lidt kringlet ind imellem. Som strategispil er det lidt for simpelt, og actiondelen er ikke særlig godt lavet.

Gene Wars bietet nicht das muntere Drauflosspielen eines Populous. Doch von allen Strategiespielen der letzten Monate ist es eines der komplexeren und mit Sicherheit das innovativste. Fortgeschrittene Echtzeittaktiker, die nicht immer nur Panzer kommandieren wollen, sollten den Krieg der Gene nicht versäumen.

Gene Wars heeft het allemaal. De knappe intro, de voortreffelijke lay-out en afwerking, de knappe graphics, het prima geluid. Het spel ademt de Bullfrogkwaliteit van bij de installatie tot aan de aftiteling. Het enige departement waar Gene Wars niet de vertrouwde Bullfrogkwaliteit haalt is jammer gnoeg de gameplay.

In the days of Populous, Theme Park and Magic Carpet, every Bullfrog release was a greatly anticipated gaming event. Then came Hi-Octane and for the first time the gaming public saw the halo tarnished. Sadly, it's slipped a bit more with Gene Wars.

I've been accused in the past of being a borderline-bootlicker to Bullfrog; they could do no wrong as far as I was concerned. But that was until Gene Wars. The game seems to have everything Bullfrog's past efforts have provided, including an incredible premise and astounding audio-visual elements. But what made games such as Populous, Syndicate, and Magic Carpet so mind-blowing was that beneath all the beautiful atmosphere lay a finely-tuned, ingenious game. Gene Wars, on the other hand, is just a gorgeous mess.

Och det enda som skulle kunna göra det bättre, att det går att välja att köra hela spelet på svenska, leder tyvärr bara till ett ännu sämre intryck. Det kanske handlar om fördomar, men när vi är vana att figurerna pratar engelska känns det urlöjligt när de hela tiden springer omkring och upprepar saker som "Det är lugnt" eller "Jag ska ssäätta liitet fröö". Fånigast är det ständiga "Goda andar har åkt nu!" och dessutom är spelet till förvirring plottrigt och osammanhängande. Tummen ner.
