Three years (game time) after the original Ghosts 'n' Goblins story, King Arthur finds that his loved one has been kidnapped yet again by a big ugly, (no not me). Ghouls 'n' Ghosts follows in the same vein as Ghosts. Arthur runs around the beautifully detailed scenery lobbing a range of offensive weaponry at the myriad of ugly mothers who would love nothing more than to reduce you to running around in your undies (if you don't believe us, play the game). I only have two slight niggles: the yellow character sprites are impossible to see on yellow backgrounds, and you're sent back to the beginning of the current level. Apart from that Ghouls 'n' Ghosts is a brilliant conversion of a very good coin op. Now go rescue that princess.

What a brilliant game! The graphics are wonderful, and the sound is great. My only qualm is its difficulty - it's very hard, and I think some people will have trouble with it. It's worth persevering though, as they don't come much better than this. I particularly like all the little touches that make the game so enjoyable, such as the array of weapons and foes. When the hurricane starts blowing, running becomes harder - an excellent visual effect. Although there are only five levels, each one is graphically unqiue - you really want to see the next level! Do yourself a favour - but this game now.

Ghouls and Ghosts plays like a lighthearted medieval game with a horror movie flavor (think Army of Darkness). You control a knight battling his way through a constantly-changing landscape of graveyards, caves, mountains, and burning towns. Along the way you encounter a remarkable variety of creatures including skull-spewing plants, zombies, and puking trolls. When you take a hit, you lose your armor and have to run around in your undies until you find a new suit (or die). New weapons and armor can be found in chests. You have to be careful though, because some chests contain an evil magician who will turn you into an old man or a duck! The dark graphics and fantastic musical score really create a terrific atmosphere. Ghouls and Ghosts is excruciatingly hard, but at least you get unlimited continues, so you can play all night. And you will.

So, to sum up, Ghouls And Ghosts makes a welcome change from the recent slick, flash but ultimately shallow coin-op hits which US Gold has produced recently (Fog Worlds, Strider) and shows a massive improvement on the dull conversions it did at the start of the year. It's good to see the gang producing genuinely good arcadey games again and this must rate as one of the most challenging and playable of the year. A bit of a triumph for USG and Software Creations all round, I think.

The look and sound could be straight from a coin-op machine: some of the most impressive seen on a licensed conversion for a long time. The pleasure of Ghouls ‘n’ Ghosts transcends the audiovisual delights on offer, though. The playability of the game will keep the most adept players waggling their joysticks for hours. It is still not that often you see licences of this quality on a home machine, so Ghouls ‘n’ Ghosts is certain to please fans of the original; but whether you have played the coin-op or not, you should give it a try. You should not be disappointed.

Graphics and sonics are both up to scratch in this first 16-bit version. The sprites are small, but great attention has been paid and rewards close inspection. In fact, TGM has no hesitation in recommending that you go out and buy Ghouls 'N' Ghosts now!

To summarize; good graphics, great music, ultra-fun & very addictive gameplay. What more do you need? This is a game every Genesis owner should have in his or her library.

The game isn't without a few flaws, though. I found some of the jumping to be a little on the unresponsive side, something that really made the platforming elements extremely frustrating. Also, not all of the levels are fully represented, and many are scaled way back to fit on the 8-bit cartridge. And the bosses, while represented, look a little silly in their 8-bit clothes. These minor problems don't really affect the game's sense of excitement, but deserved to be mentioned.

It has been a good year for conversions. With 16-bit machines programmers are no longer having to force a quart into a pint pot, and that is proving to be to everyone’s benefit. Ghouls ‘n’ Ghosts deserves to be up there at the end of they year.

ZX SpectrumComputer and Video Games (CVG)
Beautifully detailed sprites and bouncy title tune blend together to create a first class conversion of a very playable coin-op. The only slight moan is that some of the sprites are a little difficult to see at times.

ZX SpectrumCrash!
My only gripe is it's really hard, and the way you're returned to the start of each level when you die is bloomin' frustrating. Nonetheless, as well as having fab graphics and triff sound (especially on 128K), it's a compelling and addictive platform romp.

Firstly, one must congratulate Software Creations for really uprating the ST game. There's lots more background graphics and the colour scheme is slightly richer. Given the usual tight schedule for these games it's good to see Ghouls isn't a straight port. Yet at the same time it's obvious this isn't a game written for the Amiga. If it had been it could've been much closer to the arcade game. On a brighter note, the tunes are all very good. Level one's excellent, with a superb ‚rushing' effect which slowly builds up. The basic gameplay is obviously much the same as the C64, but more difficult which can be irritating. Lacking the C64's amazing presentation, and significant improvements in gameplay, Amiga Ghouls just misses out on an award. But for just £20 it's heartily recommended as a great test of arcade reactions.

This is a good example of some of the excellent games released for the Master System near the end its lifecycle. At first glance, you could easily mistake this game for the Genesis version. The graphics are crisp and detailed, and the gameplay is just like the arcade (including the huge bosses). The renaissance music is outstanding. Only some slowdown and graphic breakup mar an otherwise superb game playing experience. As your knight makes his way through graveyards, villages, and caves, danger lurks at every turn. Ghouls 'n Ghost's most distinguishing feature is its difficulty, and this version is no different. It seems like every one of those chests contains that evil magician who turns you into a chicken or an old man. At times it's insanely difficult. There are unlimited continues, and you'll find yourself playing into the wee hours of the morning if you're really bent on beating this game.

The first stage of the game didn't strike me as wonderful with the small hero graphic sometimes getting lost with the yellow walls but on later levels this criticism disappears and the large scale monsters are very good, in both graphics and size with later levels showing some good uses of colour and making for a game which can be played for ages, by all ages.

Ghouls’ N Ghosts is the perfect arcade platformer. Its fast paced gameplay, intriguing map, and mood setting graphics and soundtrack make for a frighteningly fun experience. While the Genesis couldn’t hold a torch to the detailed visuals found at the arcade, the experience at home is arguably improved by the system’s controller, and the addition of unlimited continues. GnG is available on the Wii VC for $8.00, and the original cartridge isn’t much more. Although it’s not the defining installment of this 2D series, this early Genesis release was a must play then, and you can bet your heart patterned pair of boxers that it still is.

Okay, so the graphics look a little ropey and the sound annoys after a short while – but Ghouls 'n' Ghosts is still a pretty good Master System conversion of the monster Capcom coin-op. The playability of the coin-op still remains in this version and battling the meanies with all manner of weapons and magic is quite fun. The game is also really challenging - some of the levels have actually been expanded from their arcade counterparts! Ghouls 'n' Ghosts is quite a nice product and is well worth taking a look at.

The bright, colourful. chunky Amstrad sprites do their best to entertain, but sadly this is the worst of the versions reviewed. The game is quite playable, but only with a pair of sunglasses.

Ghouls n' Ghosts is a wonderful title in the Master System's library. Gothic horror titles were almost an underground genre back then, and it's nice to see one on an under-appreciated system with few titles on the NTSC market to begin with. Fans of Ghosts n' Goblins for the Nintendo NES will enjoy this one and it could possibly be a good lead-in to SMS collecting. At any rate, though not perfect, it's a title that anyone who plays the system should own.

SEGA Master SystemElectronic Gaming Monthly (EGM)
The 8-Bit Sega translation of Ghouls 'N' Ghosts is pretty amazing! The graphics are some of the best you'll ever see on the SMS, and the game play remains just as strong. Sound quality isn't up to 16-Bit standards, but there aren't many SMS titles to strongly recommend, but this is one.

If you have the ability, time and patience Ghouls and Ghosts could be a great game; graphics are colourful and detailed, if a little small, and sound and gameplay adequate. Unfortunately, I'm no Mother Teresa and will have to let it pass, but someone out there could do a blinding sequal.

I remember thinking how wonderful this was when it was first released, and I can also recall how utterly superb the C64 version of Ghosts 'n' Goblins was. These days though, it's looking a bit dated.

Is this lack of innovation a bad thing, you may ask? The original, it must be said, was great, and this is just as good as its parent. A straightforward shoot-'em'up platformer with nothing radically different from other games of its type. Quite a good buy then providing, that is, you have considered the question: is that damn Princess really worth it?

WiiGameSpot
Even though Ghouls 'N Ghosts for the Sega Genesis is a watered-down port of the original 1988 arcade game, some fans of the series prefer it over other conversions because it offers the closest approximation of the arcade game and has a friendlier learning curve. However, should you decide to purchase the Sega Genesis rendition of Capcom's medieval side-scroller from the Wii's Virtual Console shop, bear in mind that friendlier doesn't necessarily mean easier.

Ghouls'N Ghosts is frustrating game. The potential is there. You can see it. But there's no use fighting the flawed gameplay system for very long. There are better sidescrollers on the Genesis and I am going to disagree with those that call this game a classic. If you liked the original, it's more of the same, but unless you have a lot of patience I'd play elsewhere.
