In preparing for the 2004 Independent Games Festival, I had to play a lot of games to get a feel for what was at the festival. In so doing I had the opportunity to play Gish, and it was at that moment that I realized that 2004 was going to be a banner year for Indie games. I'll make no secret of it and state it clearly at the front of this review. Gish is one of the best games to come out in a very long time and instead of reading this review you should be heading over to the Chronic Logic website and plunking down the $20 to buy the game right now.
Chances are that I would never have looked seriously at Gish were it not for my previous experience with its developer, Chronic Logic and their Bridge Construction Set. I am not a fan of platformers and have not so much as touched one created in 2D for years. However, anyone who read my review of BCS knows that I found an unbelievably good game where I least expected it, so “why not?” logic has lead down the same path.
I could go on for pages and hours to mention all the good sides of gish,i could tell you that the game also has awesome realtime lighting effects which are also influenced by the moving objects, or i could tell you about the cute characters and sweet animations (yep, maybe also about the splattering animations when you jump on the head of an enemy which is still cute as the enemy and the animation are just too cute to be gory) or about the cool movie parody pictures coming up before each level,or the funny background story which evolves to unexpected areas later, or about hidden bonus games, some of which are complete games and just awesome, but well, i´ll leave it at saying gish is the most creative and cool platformer in decades.
Gish is an absolutely top-notch game that shows just how creative and imaginative an independently developed and published game can be. Download the demo and give Gish a try.
Gish is clever, great fun and downright innovative. You really won't find another game quite like this one, and now with the option to pay want you want for it, there's absolutely no excuse to dive into his world.
Whoever decided making a ball of tar the hero in a video game is either very imaginative or really bored. The thinking tank must be running on empty to develop a title solely based on the excrements of the Earth. Meh, maybe its just because I was never a fan of tar. After a fun filled day at the beach, getting home and scrubbing my feet of the black substance plastered on tightly wasn't exactly the highlight of the trip. But Chronic Logic has done it in its latest project, Gish.

And now onto the oft-explored platformer scene comes a little title called Gish from the good people over at Chronic Logic. This game is a side-scroller, it's a platformer, but it also is highly original, addictively fun, and the best shareware game I have played in a long, long time. Forget Unreal Tournament 2004, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, or Homeworld 2. You don't need the greatest system or a fifty dollar game to have a lot of fun; all you need is Gish.
What an awesome little game! Gish more or less epitomizes everything that independently produced, budget-priced titles should aspire to. Rather than making a dull, no-frills copy of a popular game, Chronic Logic has taken a well-worn genre--the 2D side-scrolling platformer--and used it as the launching pad for some exuberant and largely successful experimentation.
Your girlfriend has been kidnapped and you have to follow the dastardly kidnappers to rescue her. You are Gish, you are also a ball of tar. The game is a side-scrolling platform from independent developers Chronic Logic. The basics are of course nothing new, there have been side-scrolling platform games almost as long as there have been video games, but Gish does add a few novel additions.
Gish is an indie game that came out too early for it's own good. It was considered a weird apparition in 2004 and now it feels out of place. It's not a bad title, but I can't find it engaging at all. Maybe it's a personal issue, and others may feel different, but there are a lot of other options on the market to choose from.
Gish is a fun game, and it has a pretty funny premise. However, when you break it down, it’s nothing more than a 2D platformer for the PC. I suppose if you are a platformer addict, you might want this game, but most people are going to overlook it. All in all, this game is nothing more than average.
It’s clearly only mediocre, but hey, it’s indie and a 2D platformer. That’s enough for at least a cult following of deluded gamers pretending it’s the best thing since sliced Braid.
