Glory of the Roman Empire is a great empire-building sim from the ground up. Its simple interface, yet high level of detail provides a great experience for both the novice and expert player alike. The rewards provided, such as monuments to build, as your city grows give governors a sense of worth and achievement as they progress through the game. Similarly, the constant strategic thinking and planning required to keep things moving forward are well balanced and will draw players in very quickly. I still prefer the open play offered by the Free Building mode to the Campaign, but both prove to be very satisfying. Anyone who likes a good, well-structured story will enjoy the campaign missions thoroughly. Glory of the Roman Empire is a well-balanced game that should appeal to both hardcore and casual gamers alike.

Glory of the Roman Empire is a great game for those looking to create a functional and beautiful Roman legacy. It has a gorgeous engine which lets you create stunning scenes with your towns and cities. Anyone with a flare for simpler Latin times or who really enjoy city builders – you don’t want to miss out on this for your collection. I said last time to keep your Imperial eye on this one, well now it’s time to get your hands on it!

Glory of the Roman Empire isn't quite as glorious as its name implies. The slightly generic nature of the design and the lack of challenge here make the game ideal for beginners but it doesn't quite satisfy players who are looking for the type of satisfaction they can only get from tougher challenges. In that way, it's the perfect game to introduce players to the genre but one they'll quickly outgrow. Veterans who stick with the game will definitely be rewarded with some charming and memorable moments but they may be better off holding out to see how the other Roman city games shape up later this year.

I've found Glory of the Roman Empire highly addictive and engaging but it's not without flaws, I'm going to have to mark it down for having some confusing mission goals at times, one particular mission involves making a settlement reach a specific city status but you're not told how to reach that status and it's quite possible to carry on building for a long time, way past what the target actually is under certain circumstances. That said, I'd definitely recommend Glory of the Roman Empire to fans of city building and management games as long as the lack of multiplayer options doesn't worry you.

So while the game's atmosphere, its intuitive interface and visual splendor are very commendable, it simply seems to lack more direction in terms of design. It's like the developers had all the tools, but lacked more imagination. Again, I could be way off the mark here, so take my opinion for what it's worth. Technically, I am not able to find any major flaws, but technical reasons are hardly the most important factor when determining whether one likes a game or not.

If you've learned the virtue of patience, GOTRE isn't all bad. It looks pretty, there are quite a few game modes, and there's a very long campaign. However, for those of us who don't find enjoyment in watching paint dry, building a city in real time is too laborious to be fun.

Overall, it feels as if developer Haemimont crafted Glory of the Roman Empire almost exclusively for those who have little to no experience playing city-builders. This in and of itself isn't a bad thing, but it would have went a long way to add additional layers to the gameplay instead of just rehashing the same objectives over and over again without adding any political or internal Roman trappings. It's tough to sell a Roman city-builder without political forums, taxmen (and money in general), or gladiators. There isn't anything strikingly bad about the game, but it's an ultimately flavorless one that leaves us hoping the upcoming CivCity: Rome and Caesar IV pack a bit more of a Roman punch.

When a game opens with a cinematic focusing on a little boy kissing and then releasing a dove to fly majestically over an idyllic countryside, you know not to expect much in the way of intense action. So you have to give Glory of the Roman Empire kudos for honesty. But you can't dish out too much praise when it comes to the game itself, as it is such a light take on the city-building genre that it practically disappears into its voluminous toga after a few hours of play. Haemimont Games takes such a casual approach to everything, from the ancient Roman setting to the quickie campaign scenarios, so that many players will find little here to latch onto and really enjoy.
