I love Golden Axe so you can imagine how I feel about The Duel. Quick pixel-free scaling backgrounds, traditional Sega Axe art and sounds, plus major supers you obtain by whacking those great little Golden Axe elves makes this a great game. It's at least four times faster than the coin-op and costs around $70 bucks, so who's complaining? So it isn't as complex as SF2, what is?

Not quite as appealing as Virtua, but if you found it in your Christmas stocking, you wouldn't be disappointed.

The game is made worthy by its speed, solid graphics and some amazing special moves which are worth practising. The only gilt-removing factor is Acclaim's forthcoming, and undeniably superior, X-Men, but you'll have another month to wait for that. Availability at least should make Golden Axe desirable.

The game is another welcome addition to my already incredibly smug Saturn collection, but it’s not something I’d go out of my way to play, and as such isn’t really worth the undoubted effort and cost associated with rare Saturn software.

Golden Axe: The Duel has nostalgic value, nice zooming graphics and decent gameplay. It's no Street Fighter II replacement, but it's not a drink coaster either. I can only recommend this game to fans of vs. fighting games and the Golden Axe series.

I'd stand behind a recommendation to rent this one in a second, although I'd have a little difficulty encouraging gamers to spend more than $30 to buy the game. It does have quite a bit of playability unto its own but it's impossible to ignore how many games like this we've all played before and how many good ones are currently available for the Saturn.
SEGA SaturnThe Video Game Critic (Apr 30, 2004)
The animation is fair, but the fights lack flow and feel stiff and mechanical. The camera scales in and out (a la Samurai Shodown) but is never really a factor. The mage can transform you into a frog, but this frog can still kick some ass! Little elves run across the screen periodically, dropping potions when you strike them. When you gather enough potions, you can "power-up" for a short period of time. The Duel's backgrounds reflect the medieval flavor of the series, but they look grainy and boring. The best aspects of this game are the sound effects and splattering blood. Otherwise it is completely forgettable.
