Description official descriptions

Gran Turismo 2 is the second game in the Gran Turismo series of racing games exclusively for the PlayStation. The racing game features 20 tracks and over 400 vehicles, an arcade mode and a simulation mode, and also supports two-player split screen racing. It's the first GT game to feature rally racing (even though it's like a time trial).

One word: HUGE

The Good
There are so many tracks and cars in this game, it will keep you going for ages. The fact that you have to make money to buy cars instead of the usual win and unlock stuff is a good move. And the computer AI isn't half bad either, making it a challenge in the harder tournaments.

The Bad
The graphics are choppy in places, although this doesn't really matter in the long run.

The Bottom Line
If their is one game you have to get, it's Gran Tursimo 3: A-Spec. But if you don't have a Playstation 2 yet, then GT2 is a perfect alternative (and it has more cars!!)

A wonderful racing game

The Good
The variety of cars, the race tracks, and the graphics. And, of course, the Corvette.

The Bad
I would have appreciated a Ford Mustang.

The Bottom Line
A wonderful race car simulation. A very realistic game with amazing graphics and gameplay.

A great sequel

The Good
The addition of a TON more cars when you thought there could be no more! Even more realistic driving. More licenses. Even though the idea was no longer new, the challenge was still nice. The addition of endurance races (2+ hours of racing one track!) The very lightweight 500hp concept car :) The Escudo. Improved graphics. Damage was implemented, even though it was very slight. Off road rally racing. New music. Huge game. I put A LOT of time into this game and was only 60% complete. I think I had around 100 cars (probably 200 including ones I sold).

The Bad
Still no love for large displacement vehicles. More licenses that you were required to get. In GT1 it was neat. In GT2 it was starting to become a chore. Endurance races. Racing one endurance race is kind of fun because you wonder what it's like. After racing one you really don't want to race the others. No realistic damage system. No ability to play 2 player co-op (remember Road Rash?). Only 6 cars on the track at a time. Music grows repetitive after a while. The sound of squealing tires every time you take a turn gets old.

The Bottom Line
A huge improvement over GT1. The next step in race gaming. Another must have. A+ for it's time. B+ against current competitors (GT3).

Trivia

Bugs

In a rush to release the game, the creators got careless and left a few glitches. One of them was when you finish the game and get everything you can, your percentage says 98.8 It teases you and makes you go insane because you think you finished.

The other glitch was that no matter what, even if you saved your game, cars can disappear from your garage.

Emulation

One of three games to be emulated on the short-lived bleemcast! PlayStation emulator for Dreamcast.

Extras

Early releases were produced with a scratch and sniff coating on the blue GT Mode disc. A gentle rub with the fingers or a soft cloth will release the fragrant scent of grease, oil and burnt rubber.

Sales

According to developer Polyphony Digital, Gran Turismo 2 sold 9,370,000 copies worldwide since its original release.
