Either of these new releases would make for a worthwhile addition to your distractions, and what is especially compelling is that Carl Johnson's tragic tale is just as good as the missions that move you from one stage of the game to the next. Part of this is the voice-acting. The cut-scenes feature contributions from tons of A-list actors like Samuel L. Jackson, Chris Penn and even Peter Fonda. But the story is just as good as the movies that inspired this particular entry, such as Pulp Fiction, Boyz N The Hood and so on. It might've been a foregone conclusion, given the way we recognized the PS2 original, but both of these new releases have proven their individual worth.

Whatever you think of San Andreas (particularly the unintelligible “street talk” and foul language, the violence and adult nature of some of the game), it still comes through all criticisms and niggles thanks to its superb production values (including some really smart City guide-style packaging exclusively for the PC version), soundtrack and hugely varied gameplay, which is much improved over Vice City, especially if you use a joypad. Of course it’ll have its critics, but it punches them in the gob, gives them the finger and disappears into the sunset in a stolen jet plane.

Rockstar has delivered their best PC port of a GTA game yet with San Andreas. It's based on an already-incredible game, and the strengths of the PC platform outweigh the weaknesses by quite a bit. The absolute best-selling game of 2004 gets even better on the PC, and any serious gamers, whether they're hardcore PC players or not, owe it to themselves to check this one out.

This time there are three sprawling cities to explore — loosely based on Las Vegas, Los Angeles and San Francisco — with huge stretches of country in between littered with redneck villages and trailer parks. Best of all, though, you can now fully customise your hero, right down to his clothes, physique and garish bling.

At the end of the day, this is GTA: San Andreas, easily the best game of 2004 on PlayStation2, one of the best games of the year across any platform for that matter, and if gamers have a worthy enough PC to see the sights of Los Santos, San Fierro, and Las Venturas, then this is a must, plain and simple.

Tallying things up, that's three points (improved graphics, load times, custom music) that put the PC version above the PS2 for everyone and one (mods) that appeal to some, with two slight negatives (gamepad glitches and lack of multiplayer missions) that bring it down a bit, but only affect a small chunk of users. Assuming you've got the hardware, there's no reason to avoid the PC version of San Andreas. After all, any game that lets you run down the local crack dealer while dangerously obese, wearing a leopard-print cowboy hat, eye patch, track pants, flip-flops and listening to David Bowie can't be all bad, right?

Despite a few concerns, the Xbox version of GTA: San Andreas still comes out mostly a winner. All the gameplay's there with a few new features, but the controls just don't feel right and the 480p support is functional but the jaggies make it bittersweet. It's still quite possibly the best game ever made, and Rockstar's done pretty much all they could to make San Andreas the best it could be on the Xbox.

Perhaps the best possible tribute to San Andreas is the fact that having finished the game over six months ago, we jumped at the chance to reacquaint ourselves with CJ and the Grove, bringing work to a grinding halt as everybody clamoured around the TV screen. Naturally a port may not be the format-defining experience that it was the first time around, however the bottom line is that there's nothing to touch San Andreas in this genre regardless of what machine it's on, pick this up immediately...

How can Rockstar follow this? San Andreas is a masterpiece; the outstanding gameplay from the first two games has been extended, tweaked and applied to a fresh, original and fascinating setting. There's more than enough meat to keep you going for months, and the sheer variety of gameplay is bewildering. Whether you're an OG, a buster, or a balla, San Andreas is an essential purchase.

But for now, buy this game, and dare to dream. As of right now the hot favourite for game of the year - regardless of platform. Arguments about how they are different game styles won’t wash – if the AFI, the Academy, the Cannes mob and Sundance crew can pick a best film every year, so can gamers opt for a top choice. Halo 2, Half Life 2, and World of Warcraft have their work cut out for them.

For social satire at its bloody, violent, finest, GTA: San Andreas is a title at the height of its potential. San Andreas truly feels like a living, breathing state. With minigames and side missions to complete 100% and beyond, it's a game designed to be played as long as your PS2 is kicking. It goes without saying that this is a game clearly designed for adults. If you’re easily offended, don’t play it. It’s the only game I’ve ever played that used the F-word (and the N-word) so liberally in the first 30 minutes of gameplay. Past that, though, at the risk of sounding too much like James Lipton, the game is truly a masterpiece. Cop it.

Most importantly, it’s about the realization that Rockstar Games succeeded in creating an interactive environment with so much to do that, at times, it seems like the only restraints on what I can accomplish come from the limits of my own imagination. Flaws or no flaws, this game is perfect.

Needless to say, Rockstar has truly gone too far. What else can they add if there is a Grand Theft Auto 4 (or is it 6, as San Andreas is sometimes mistaken as GTA V)? With over 100 hours of stuff to uncover, San Andreas will be visited many times.

In the end, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas is the great game that we all hoped it would be. It isn't a giant leap forward in the series, but what else can they really do other than add more cars and more stuff to make the cities, and now states, you explore more realistic. It isn't as if Rockstar North took an if it ain't broke, don't fix it mentality with San Andreas. Every single aspect of the gameplay has been improved. More notably, the state of San Andreas is a whole lot bigger and a whole lot more interesting than Liberty City and Vice City were. The whole reason why GTA games are so fun is that you have the freedom to explore and do anything and everything you want and San Andreas lets you do that better than any game before it. Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas is highly recommended for a purchase. Rent it if you aren't sure before you buy it, but definitely play it. You can get hundreds of hours of gameplay out of your $50 investment, and that sounds pretty good to me.

While I can't say that GTA: San Andreas is another revolution in gaming like GTA3 was, it is an evolution that goes light years beyond what we saw with the last two titles in the series. Yes, I have become a shameless fanboy of the GTA series, and I expected a lot from San Andreas. I got what I expected and way more than that.

Non-linear, absolutely packed with things to do, entertaining radio stations, great missions, great story, great characters, enough diversions to keep you playing for months, so much diversity in the cities that you may never stop discovering new aspects of town. Almost every flaw can be forgiven and dealt with, unless you’re really jaded and can’t handle even the slightest problem. It’s not perfect, but this is the first PS2 game I’ve felt could really get a perfect 10…and thus it’s received one. The graphics aren’t great, but at the end of the day, they don’t ruin the game, so it’s all forgiven, especially considering how huge the game is. In short, the sum is greater than its parts. It’s better than GTA III, it’s better than Vice, and it’s better than 99% of the PS2 library. It’s still not going to be a game for everyone, but if you’re huge on games with freedom, with tons of crazy stuff to do, and like a game with a great sense of humo, GTA: San Andreas is about as good as it gets.

Though there's plenty of morality issues in San Andreas and it's certainly not for the young ones (more so than both previous games), the story is solid and enjoyable throughout and will have you doing plenty of missions full of variety and endless fun. Even if you don't like the story, exploring the mammoth state is worth the price of admission alone and there's loads to do other than what the main missions offer. Sure there's some graphical issues, some animations are poor and seem to be missing frames or are just too fast, etc, etc, but no amount of problems could really hurt this game and the good things it has to offer. Rockstar has outdone themselves and their competitors once again, raising the bar on just about every aspect of gameplay. If you have a PlayStation 2, you should have San Andreas. No excuses, other than being under 18!

GTA: San Andreas is possibly the most ambitious game ever attempted, but that doesn't make it great. "Welcome to the Jungle, we got fun and games" - quite fitting that the Guns & Roses song has become something of a title track for GTA: San Andreas, a game that quite honestly represents the most fun you can have with a videogame "it's as simple as that"

It may not be everyone’s idea of their perfect game but like a lot of people, I can’t get enough. And even if you can get enough, it’s only because San Andreas is one gigantic slice of sweet gaming pie. Whatever your view, games are going to be compared to San Andreas for a long time to come, and rightly so. As far as the GTA series goes, it’s totally outdone itself and everything else like it. It was hyped to hell and still exceeded expectations. Will it ever get better than this? Hopefully, but not on the PS2, that’s for almost certain.

Even without the controversy surrounding the series and the few odd quirks mentioned above, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas pulls together all the aspects required of an A-grade game. It plays extremely well, looks good enough, sounds great, tells an interesting and cinematic story, and gives you a ton to see and do, even after completing the game. I usually complain that many single player games these days do not have much in the way of "replayability". That is one aspect where San Andreas sets the bar so ridiculously high, that I can't imagine any non-GTA games coming anywhere near it for years to come.

Overall, the variety of missions and gameplay in San Andreas really changes the pace of the series. Especially with the addition of RPG elements, this is by far the best GTA of the series. I am still playing San Andreas and enjoying every minute of it. If you're not a big GTA fan, I would say that you should rent it and give it a shot. Since you don't have just one set path to choose from, you will be amazed at the difference in gameplay. This is definitely a keeper for those of you who like involving games with a lot of variety.

In the end, GTA: SA isn't perfect, mirroring a few of the same quirks (i.e. auto-targeting) and graphic glitches as its predecessor, Vice City. But, with a bevy of positive elements ranging from the absence of load times, an abundance of side quests explore and yes, Peter Fonda - San Andreas is unquestionably worth the price of admission.

If you've played the PlayStation 2 version to death, there is no reason to bother with the Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas on the Xbox. It's the same great game, only with a little bit more visual polish here and there and a couple of extra features. Those who only own an Xbox, or purposely skipped the PlayStation 2 game in anticipation of an enhanced version, will be happy to know that this is definitely the best version. Now there's no excuse. Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas is a truly groundbreaking game, using the previous GTA formula as its foundation and building and expanding upon it far more than anyone could reasonably have foreseen or expected. It is more like a living, breathing city than ever before, with a huge area to explore, dozens and dozens of missions to carry out, and an almost endless array of things to do on the side, like burglaries, street racing, buying new threads, customising your car, working out in the gym and so much more. The gameplay is more enjoyable and addictive than ever, the story is even better than before and the city is so full of detail and variety that the fun literally never ends.

A lot of hype led up to San Andreas. Many thought it would be hard to make good on all the claims that were made about the game. They were wrong. This game is far larger than any other game ever to grace the Action/Adventure genre. Its story is compelling and appealing to today's youth (A story about a gangsta who returns home to exact revenge upon his mother's killers) and features music that ANYONE can enjoy. The graphics are not the best, however the gameplay more than makes up for it with it's varied activities and lack of repetition. CJ (the main protagonist) can swim, climb, jump, drive, ride, fly, parachute and more. This is far more than any other game has ever delivered. San Andreas is everything that was promised and more. It's sound, graphics and story are by far the best in the series and very near the best ever.

IT'S A TESTAMENT TO THE BRILLIANCE of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas that, even after two years and a ton of new features, getting back into the series' latest installment is as easy as riding a bike. Literally. The game's opening sequence has you pedaling a BMX away from rival gangbangers, and even though riding a bike might not sound that exciting, Rockstar manages to make it fun -- just like the next 40+ hours of this amazing epic. Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas is arguably the best in the series - which is saying a lot -- and while we can't help wishing the PC port could have been shown just a little bit more love, it's the best PC game we've played this year.

Few games in history (if any) carry the amount of cachet that Rockstar's Grand Theft Auto series currently holds.

By now you think you’ve heard everything that has been said about the Grand Theft Auto series. You’ve heard about how the last two ground-breaking installments changed the face of video games or--for the most part--how it took us off the beaten path and freed us from a forced linear path. Everything you heard about the series, however, just doesn’t come close to describing the overall grandness that is Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. So allow me to forgo my usual opening introduction and get right to the review of a game that’s a work of lawbreaking brilliance.

I'm not going to beat around the bush. Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas is the single best PlayStation 2 title I have ever played. It's larger than the biggest RPG, has more story than the heftiest adventure game, and has almost as many mini-games as Nintendo's Mario Party. Additionally, it has a production value that's second to none, boasts a faithfulness to '90s source material with an eerie accuracy, and provides more hours of entertainment than all the previous Grand Theft Autos combined. In short, it's a terrific unending masterpiece of a game -- and one that will never fall victim to an over-exaggeration of its lofty status. It's the defining piece of software for Sony's successful sophomore system, and it's almost impossible to imagine a PlayStation 2 library without it.

There’s really not much to say about San Andreas other than it is easily the best of the series. All in all, this is one of the most entertaining games I have ever played. That is saying a lot. In the fifteen years I’ve been playing games, this is one of the best games ever. It is so deep, so much fun, and it has almost nothing going against it. Hell, they even added a co-op mode. You and a buddy can go and bag some gangsters. The depth and the fun never stop. Just when you thought there is nothing more that could be done, they add a new twist to the table. Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas will likely be the best game of 2004 in a runaway. It would take a lot for a game to be as good as this one. The bar has been raised for all games of this generation. San Andreas is a true masterpiece.

Grand Theft Auto sets the bar, and others aspire to it. It’s certainly not the graphics that keep people coming back, and anyone would be hard pressed to point out any one action, event, or situation that makes the game so great. What it really comes down to is the relentless fun that assaults you throughout the time you play. Nearly every moment in San Andreas is filled with excitement, humor, or intense action. Grand Theft Auto is, in our opinion, the greatest game franchise ever released (although the less said about GTA 2, the better) and now that Vice City has been shown not to be a ‘one time’ thing Rockstar have shown they still hold the crown as publishers of total class gaming originality. GTA: SA is oozing with so much gaming fun that anyone with sense will be walking into a shop tomorrow to pick up a copy. Cut scenes have been brought to a new level, especially later in the game, not only will you need to watch them to learn what to do in the mission; you’ll be failing it just so you can watch them again. More cars, bikes, planes, helicopters and boats (and even a hovercraft) then any previous GTA title plus the sheer size and longevity of San Andreas mean this just has be a part of any self respecting gamers collection.

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas will be many different things to different people. Despite the technical flaws here and there, the game is incredibly fun. It will surely take up hundreds of hours to even the most casual of gamers. If you liked GTA III and Vice City, this is a must buy. If you are simply looking for a game that wraps up gaming in this generation, San Andreas is perfect. Everything from the gameplay to the superb presentation merges into an excellent game. So why the same score as the PS2 version if the game is better? Well, the PC is a more capable platform so those changes are expected.

Given the wonderful environment design, new RPG elements, and extremely well done "gangsta" theme, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas comes as close to perfect as anything in the past few years. A few technical issues and an aging engine are the only complaints, and they're minor.

If you enjoyed the previous GTAs, San Andreas is a no-brainer must buy. The game is evolving into so much more. The main let down comes from the graphics. Seeing as how cars play a big role in the games, I'd like to see them put in some street racing style customization. But as it stands, San Andreas is a solid game well worth the price of purchase.

I said it at the beginning of this article, and I’ll say it again…San Andreas is probably the best title ever made for the PS2. Thanks to the sheer level of detail and the amount of gameplay you’ll be able to engage in during C.J.’s adventures, San Andreas surpasses just about any game that’s come along in the PS2’s history. If you own a PS2, you MUST own this game. Fo’ Sho’.

There is no doubting it; San Andreas is one of the greats. The small flaws with graphics barely make a dent in the overall gameplay, and you’ll find yourself staying up all hours of the night to play this gem. It’s impossible to describe all the things you can do in San Andreas in this one review, so my advice is to go out and buy the game for yourself, you won’t regret it.

So, whether a player is the type to focus on the missions or the type who likes to play around with the game, San Andreas has plenty to offer. Only the graphical bugs, slow-down and other nit picks associated with the fact that the game is pushing the aging PS2 to its limits keeps this from being the first perfect entry into the series. As it is, GTA: San Andreas is very, very good — a game I fully expect to still be playing when the inevitable PC version appears and takes care of the games dated looks.

In the end, San Andreas eclipses every other game that has come before it simply because it is more than simply a bunch of code on a disc. San Andreas and the whole Grand Theft Auto series is truly a phenomenon that tests the boundaries of our society by gently pushing at the limits of our collective fabric. It puts forth ideas that we shy from and lets us explore them in a safe and controlled environment. Does San Andrea go too far sometimes? Yes and no. It gives us the freedom to do anything we choose. But these are our decisions. And for this reason it stands alone as an unprecedented achievement. Regardless of what platform you play it on, San Andreas must be experienced at all costs. It might not always be pretty, but it sure is fun.

The idea of a console-specific title has fallen by the wayside as the revenue for big-time franchises continue to skyrocket. While we’re probably not going to see Forza Motorsport on the PS2 or God of War on the Xbox, we can count on indy studios to eventually offer up titles originally launched as console exclusives for other platforms. The best example of console exclusivity thrown out the window has to be Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto Double Pack for the Xbox. Sony got (bought) the jump on the competition, but eventually Xbox’ers were able to enjoy the GTA franchise; slightly enhanced for the more powerful system. The same strategy has been employed for Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas which is landing on game store shelves some seven months after it dropped on the PS2.

Mein lieber Herr Gesangsverein.

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas is without a doubt the best GTA to date. New challenges are exhibited in nearly every mission, and with a huge quantity of new improvements, additions, and challenges involving all the skills they provide you, this is one hell of a game. There is also a very involving story that keeps the game moving along, as it keeps you wondering how things will turn out and why things are happening. While the other Grand Theft Auto games still hold their own by being set in different cities and having distinctively different atmospheres (from being a mercenary in GTA3, to a part of the mob in Vice City), GTA: San Andreas manages to be unique, having the whole aura of the main character being completely different, making itself a definite must-have.

The Grand Theft Auto series has been often imitated, but never duplicated. Once again, Rockstar delivers a game that will raise the bar in this genre and give the competitors something else to shoot for (and likely fall short of). GTA:SA is a fun game, and in this case, bigger is indeed better.

Despite a few concerns, the Xbox version of GTA San Andreas still comes out mostly a winner. All the gameplay's there with a few new features, but the controls just don't feel right and the 480p support is functional but the jaggies make it bittersweet. It's still quite possibly the best game ever made, and Rockstar's done pretty much all they could to make San Andreas the best it could be on the Xbox.

How do you follow up a runaway success like 2001's Grand Theft Auto III? Rockstar North responded a year later with GTA: Vice City, a game that took the gameplay of its predecessor and expanded it considerably. At the same time, Vice City gave the series an extensive and amazing stylistic makeover, drenching the experience in the sights, sounds, and attitude of Miami, Florida from the mid '80s. So where do you go from there? You take it statewide. Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas expands the series' concept to encompass three entire cities, as well as the countryside between them. The gameplay similarly expands, packing in some explosive set pieces and amazing action-movie-like thrills while maintaining that same remarkably fun, freefom GTA feel. In short, Rockstar has done it again. San Andreas definitely lives up to the Grand Theft Auto name. In fact, it's arguably the best game in the series.

When a game like San Andreas is so anticipated and hyped it can be easy to get caught up in the hype or tear it apart for not being as good as everyone expects it to be. That said, San Andreas is bloody good, the minor graphic flaws that come with it don’t spoil the game play and while there are some frustrating moments the better ones overwhelm them. San Andreas is what we expected it to be. It’s big, bold and delivers one hell of a good gaming experience. There are so many things to do, the missions are more varied and in most cases a little easier, the variety of vehicles and added enhancements make the overall package worthy of anyone’s collection.

San Andreas is also one of the few videogames to boldly feature an African-American as a hero (or, more appropriately, an anti-hero). Beyond that, the GTA series continues to function as a gathering place for A-list artists, writers, musicians, and actors. Only a GTA game can bring together Samuel L. Jackson, Peter Fonda, and Chris Penn; only a GTA game would dare to mix Dr. Dre, Kiss, and Merle Haggard on the same soundtrack. Indeed, this is more than a videogame; this is a great confluence of mediums and talents, a veritable pop culture divining rod that makes me imagine a future where GTA-caliber games are commonplace, where videogames are no longer marginalized, but like film and television, have become the medium of choice. And for this glimpse of the future, we should all be grateful.

Audio issues aside, this is easily one of the most comprehensive action games ever made. It services so many different parts of "ooh I wanna do that!" gamers' addictions (check out the previews for more on that) that it's hard to find someone not liking this game. Major issues were cleaned up a bit (and hey, there's always improvements that can still be made to stuff like targeting), and the sheer number of references to characters, events and places in previous games (not to mention the reoccurring characters that go well beyond cameos) is enough to make this a must-buy for any GTA nerd, but more importantly, it's a hell of an experience, and if you're old enough to buy it, there's no reason why you shouldn't do so as soon as your little game geek legs can get you to a nearby store.

As for the differences between the PlayStation 2 and Xbox versions, they are somewhat superficial. If you have already played the game to death on PlaysStation 2 then it may not be worth picking up the Xbox version. However, if you are an Xbox user who has previously resisted the charms of the title, then I highly recommend running to your local video game store (running fast), buying a copy, running home, putting the disc in your Xbox and the procceding to play the game for a long time. You may need supplies like food and water, but apart from that you should be fine. The game is a look at the future of gaming, if only more developers put this much devotion into their games then the gaming world would be a much happier place.

Okay, I have to admit upfront, I'm a fan of the Grand Theft Auto games, and this game did nothing to change that. Before I proceed to the meat of the review, please keep in mind that I haven't so much as touched the PlayStation 2 version of this game (which came out significantly earlier and proceeded to break all kinds of sales records). In addition, all the GTA games I've played so far have been on consoles, but I'm also a very discriminating PC gamer. That is, my review should be relatively unspoiled by expectations or irrational fandom.

The first time I played Grand Theft Auto III extensively, I was amazed by its creators' vision and style. GTA III delivered some of this generation's most influential game design and simultaneously reached previously unseen mass commercial success. The design was planned; but the success? Well, selling more than 7 million units within a year was way beyond anyone's imagination. Grand Theft Auto: Vice City saw a change in style, the excessive use of the color pink, and one of the best all-time soundtracks included in a videogame. Interestingly enough, it also added a voice to the lead character Tommy Vercetti, which had previously been a verboten subject in the videogame world. Oh, how far we have come.

It’s not like you won’t get used to driving on the keyboard, though, so I can’t say I’d rather play the console versions. Once you get the graphics and load times on the PC (which still aren’t outstanding in today’s standards but are much better than the consoles) it’s tough to swallow the alternative. The port of San Andreas to the PC may have been uninspired and straightforward, but since it was such a great game to being with, it’s hard to fault Rockstar for that. If you already own another version, you’d be silly to purchase it again, but if you don’t have any copy of the game yet, you should only opt for a console version if you want to play in the living room with some friends watching. Otherwise, grab the PC version for the best experience.

Fans of the series and new-comers alike should definitely pick up the latest piece of ultra-violence from Rockstar. There's just so much to do in San Andreas that you have to pick it up and experience what the developers put so much time into. San Andreas feels like a living, breathing world where you can make choices that affect yourself and the world around you in a non-linear, multi-levelled fashion, and above that it's just plain FUN completing missions or roaming the streets causing damage like a mad man, hunting down secret objects to collect or just discovering "oh my, you can do THAT?" Basically, what we have here is Grand Theft Auto on speed. It's about ten times what the original, groundbreaking game was, in every way. More importantly, the additions and improvements that have been introduced in this latest installment in the series do make a huge difference on the gameplay. They are not just cosmetic changes, they make the entire game experience a whole lot better. That's what good sequels should be all about. I can't not recommend this game to fans of the series, and basically anyone that has ever wanted to vent out a little by committing virtual crimes. It is the perfect crime game. Even the packaging for the game is a work of art.

Of course, it’s the combination of all of these plus much more that makes GTA: SA an essential purchase. As for which format to choose (assuming you own all formats), we’d say the PC version comes out on top for its superior control system, graphical capabilities, and loading times. It also comes with a great little hardback book. The fact that GTA: SA is a must-buy for any gamer is a given though, no matter which format you plump for. It’s not perfect – there’s still the odd gripe here and there, and wheeling the same game engine out for the next instalment would be unforgivable – but SA is easily the most polished instalment of the series to date. Go out. Purchase the game. Be violent in it. Be very happy while playing it. But try and resist the urge to start addressing your friends as “homies”, though…

But damn it feels good to be a gangsta. When you’re not stuck with vehicles that simulate drunk driving, SA represents the best entry in the GTA series to date. There’s an unbelievable amount of things to do and fun to be had, much of it at the player’s whim. If developers have any sense we’ll see dozens of copycats in the future, as if there weren’t enough for GTA3. Any mistakes in San Andreas due to consumption of haggis are forgiven.

Xbox owners can finally break out the forty's and gather up some ho's with the biggest, baddest Grand Theft Auto game yet, San Andreas moving on in to the Xbox gaming 'hood. PS2 owners had an eight-month jump on all the bad boyz action in the state of San Andreas, but GTA: San Andreas finally gets paroled onto the Xbox, and proves worth the wait, because this is the most comprehensive, large-scale GTA ever, with plenty of the amazing GTA sandbox-style anti-hero gameplay that the series has invented. It's not often that we do three unique reviews for one game across multiple platforms. But given the length of time between the original PS2 release and the subsequent Xbox and PC releases, we felt it important to give it a second look. On top of that, PC gamers may have some expectations that may be a little different than console gamers so we decided to differentiate those as well. What we found after playing the game for so long is that it's still an excellent game on the PC. It looks better than the other two versions and has better combat controls while suffering only slightly in the driving department with the mouse and keyboard. It's an expansive, awesome, well produced and put together game with a ton of different missions of all sorts. While it has its problems, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas is a very entertaining game with hours and hours of fun for those who both want to rip right through the story or explore the gigantic environment.

In conclusion, this is the pinnacle of the GTA series. The customization is endless, the storyline is great, the voice acting is great, and there are enough new features in the game to categorize it as a true sequel, not Vice City on steroids. If you enjoyed any of the previous GTA games, pick up this game.

San Andreas is a high brandwidth assault on the senses. It's unfortunate if you're too sensitive to procure a copy or don't have a sufficient PC. For the rest, rob your mother, sell your cat, and above all else, buy San Andreas. It's a steal. This is the best PC game of the year, and it translates the entertainment from the original PS2 version exceptionally well.

Why is Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas such a great game? To put it simply, the game is huge. It has such a variety of things going on that almost everybody can find a part of it that they enjoy. That isn't to say that GTA:SA is for everybody. The game is full of gratuitous violence and sexual undertones and shouldn't be played by kids anywhere, people that have problems with breaking the law, or those bizarre people that don't enjoy a good time.

Cya!

That hardly means it isn't worth at least a look, though. "A bit thin" for this game is still like playing two or three other games rolled into one, from a value and variety standpoint. San Andreas has a wicked sense of humor, a masterfully told saga of gang life and a nearly endless collection of things to do besides missions - as long as you don't mind it being a bigger, better Vice City rather than a really revolutionary game in its own right.

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas is to the gaming world what The Matrix was to the film industry: it breaks so much ground and introduces so many significant things that it will no doubt have an impact on how games are made for a long time to come. I am not usually one to buy into the hype, but GTA: San Andreas deserves every bit of hype it gets. It offers hours upon hours of good fun, a stellar soundtrack, an engrossing story and the replay value is extremely high: you’ll be finding new stuff littered about the massive world of San Andreas for months to come. Do yourself a huge favor and give it a shot. Games like this don't come along very often, so don't miss it.

For a port of a six month old game, Xbox owners should be both surprised and pleased with what the game has to offer. Visual enhancements and a tighter control scheme allow for further enjoyment of the game. While there?s nothing new in terms of gameplay content, it still warrants a buy for anyone who has played the PS2 version based solely on the crisper and cleaner appearance of the environment. If you haven?t had the chance to play the PS2 version, there?s no reason why you shouldn?t miss out. Even if you aren?t a fan of GTA, you may find yourself enjoying your time in San Andreas.

There is so much to see and explore in this game that it is a must buy for any X-Box owner. Unless you have the monthly game pass at your local Blockbuster, don’t bother renting for the weekend. It will take you a month just to see a good portion of this game. It’s bigger than anything I have ever seen. This is the game that this writer will be playing for the rest of the summer, and I’m sure you’ll feel the same once you try it out and witness first hand the enormous size of the game. The only thing even remotely missing is a multiplayer feature, although that is probably right around the corner as well. Other than an improvement on the graphics, San Andreas has hit such a high mark that multiplayer may be the only new direction this series can go. Represent!!

Ahh ... Grand Theft Auto. Those three words are enough to fill the hearts of gamers with glee. The Grand Theft Auto (GTA) series has been around for a while now but it wasn't until GTA III that the gaming world was turned upside down. The biggest change between the previous versions of the first two games and the third game was the transition to a 3D viewpoint. But this change revolutionized the gaming world and gaming hasn't been the same since. Never before did gamers have an almost living, breathing world that allowed them to live out all of their secret criminal desires. It's sometimes hard to admit but running around killing characters in a game with a blow torch and being wanted by the cops, FBI and National Guard was an amazing experience.

By now, you probably know how this works. The new Grand Theft Auto game comes out in October, but only on the PlayStation 2. Xbox and PC owners have to wait a half a year or so for their versions of the game, and each always has the potential to be better than the original release. That's saying something, because we're already talking about one of the best games of 2004 and the best game in the Grand Theft Auto series. Once again, the wait is over, and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas is now available on the PC and Xbox. While both versions have aspects that are better than the outstanding PS2 game, visual weirdness on the Xbox and a handful of technical issues on the PC prevent either version from being the clear-cut best of the bunch.

Still, in the grand scheme of GTA's immensity, these are fairly minor issues that don't really detract too much from the overall experience — which, it should be said, is still phenomenal. If for some reason you've never played San Andreas (because, say, you don't own a PS2) there's absolutely no reason not to take this opportunity to try it, either on PC or Xbox. Carl Johnson's tale certainly isn't for everyone (Rockstar has squeezed every last drop of freedom from its M rating), but those with the stomach for its grim, violent style will be rewarded with a vast world to explore and one of the best examples to date of great storytelling in games. San Andreas has more than its share of rough spots, but the rewards certainly make those irritations worth suffering.

What you have here is the most polished, feature-laden, action-packed Grand Theft Auto title to-date. I’ve had my qualms with the franchise in the past but this is the first time that I was able to sit back, shut off my brain and enjoy the experience. Sure, there are still some problems with the mission structure, but there’s a good chance that you’ll be too engulfed in the experience to realize these minor deficiencies. Just make sure you realize what you’re getting in to; once you step into San Andreas it’ll be a long time until you’ll want to set foot outside your door again.

If you haven't ever played a Grand Theft Auto game… well, first of all, shame on you, but more importantly, this is the one to get you hooked. The only reason San Andreas shouldn't be a must-buy would be if you already owned the PS2 or PC version and couldn't justify another purchase for a couple of minor differences from the other two.

If you’ve already played the Playstation2 version of San Andreas, there’s no real need to pimp your way through this edition. Even though the Xbox version was released over 7 months after the PS2 game and there are a few minor graphical touch ups thanks to the power of the Xbox, there are still no new missions, no bonus games, or any game play enhancements at all for that matter. Normally something like that would really bug the hell out of me, but I’m not talking about any old game here. Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas is literally one of the biggest games ever created and it will take you weeks or even months just to see everything it has to offer. San Andreas may not have the graphical overhaul and other improvements I wanted, but if you are one of the few people that have not played this awesome, adults-only game you have less of an excuse not to go out and play it now.

Murder, theft, driving way too fast, using suggestive language, getting busy with girls of pleasure: all of these things were possible in last years’ Grand Theft Auto. The morality guys think this will turn a young, innocent toddler into a lean, mean, killing machine. On the other hand, there are the hype-haters. They find every game that has been hyped a bit bad by default. It’s just not done to follow the crowd even if it’s a triple A title. If everyone thinks it’s cool, we’ll think the opposite, because that’s the trick: being cool can be achieved by acting un-cool. Do you get the picture? No? Well good, because it’s easy to see that GTA: San Andreas is, in spite of the morality knights and in spite of the resemblances with a milking cow, a blockbuster game. It’s the shit esé.

This latest GTA is an epic, involving experience, no doubt—but when you get past the expansive world and the RPG-like elements, it’s the same epic, involving experience it was last year. Had Rockstar taken the time to polish up the rough spots, San Andreas on the PC would have been worth a look for everyone. As it is, it’s only a must-have for the handful of gamers who missed it the first time around.

When you take San Andreas apart to look at the bits, it’s not too impressive a sight. But it’s not a game that’s played in such a deconstructive stasis; everything is moving and swirling together before you, and when it all hums in smooth unison it’s an unbeatable rush of freedom and empowerment. A ten. A phenomenon. A game like no other. And when it clashes, you’re left with a grudging seven. A flawed gem. A broken masterpiece; nothing has really changed in three years. But – much like this review – you’re vocalising those flaws so strongly only because you were so deeply, hypnotically engrossed in the first place.

Ein Patch tut Not! So the graphics aren't anything to write home about, but especially considering the size of this game, they're nothing to be ashamed about either. My car handling gripes may be a matter of personal taste so don't let that stop you from purchasing this game either. If you can appreciate a good action movie with lots of violence and gore, then I'm sure you'll appreciate San Andreas as well. If you faint at seeing blood or have religiously forsworn violence in any form. pass this one up and have the rest of the world annoy you with the stories of all the cool stuff they've done in the game.

However, casting morality aside for one moment, GTA: SA is a glorious thrilling ride of delinquency. It offers just enough freedom, and more than enough violence, to make for a truly epic game. The changes from the PS2 version for the PC, such as expanded draw distance and customizable user tracks, make the game worth picking up for those who have already plunked hundreds of hours into the console edition of the saga. Those who haven’t given the game a shot yet will find the PC version as good a place to start as any, and anyone who’s even remotely interested in free-form, sandbox chaos should give it a shot. It’s intensely sloppy in spots but it’s also deliriously entertaining and brilliant, and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas easily stands as the series’ crowning jewel.

All in all, GTA: San Andreas is probably the most complete package you will see on the PC this year. The game has literally everything, and should keep players interested for at least 50 hours, if not more. Even with the few minor annoyances aside, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas PC does the series proud and clearly comes right off the bat as a strong candidate for 2005's PC game of the year. It has the same impressive depth and ability as the highly acclaimed PS2 version, which instantly makes it a must have title for any serious PC gamer. While it offers little to gamers who have already played the PS2 version thoroughly, there is no harm in revisiting the latest addition to what has to be one of the best game series ever made all over again on a new platform, and for anyone who hasn't played it at all yet, either jump on board now or find a new hobby, because you're way behind on the whole gaming thing.

All of the Grand Theft Autos have been made up of imaginary distances, giving us room to think up what we want in their open spaces. San Andreas’ greatest success is that it gives us more space for our imaginations than most other games do, and ties together the edges neatly with a well-crafted story and missions, adding up to a whole that few games can compare to.

While Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas is without a doubt in my top five games of the year when it comes to pure gaming enjoyability, I have to subtract a point for what, in my opinion, is a total lack of overall upgrading. While there are hundreds of more things to do in San Andreas, I feel, in my heart of hearts, that the game looks and plays just like its two predecessors. I cannot really see a massive improvement on visuals or the physics engine, and as a result, both Vice City and San Andreas seem to be expansions of the GTA III game. It's a great game, but I guess I am coming to expect more from Rockstar than just new missions and new distractions. I am forever grateful to them for realizing that adults need great games as much as the kids do, and I love them for not "talking down" to me, but for GTA 4, can we take the presentation to a new level, please?

Without doubt San Andreas is an outstanding game in many respects. The scale of the game is just so huge that it will take players many hours to see everything the game has to offer. It is just a shame that this excellence is brought down slightly by the often lacklustre visuals, the excessive distances to travel in some missions and a lot of land where there is little to do. The excessive use of coarse language may also put some players off, and will often be impractical to play in homes where there are younger ears around. However, the problems it has do not stop San Andreas from leaving a very favourable impression. It is a game that will grab a player's attention, not letting go for many hours, days and weeks, and whose memory will linger even longer.

GTA: San Andreas improves on virtually all aspects of its predecessor. Some will condemn it as simply more of the same, while others will be grateful that it is so. While I preferred the Eighties as a thematic basis, playing GTA: San Andreas is a more fulfilling experience. The story does tend to drag on a bit, and the sheer magnitude of things to do could very possibly overwhelm you, but Rockstar has once again crafted a videogame experience to be celebrated.

Rest assured, though – there’s more at work here than a review such as this could hope to describe. Between its towering mountains and vast waters there are surprises, in-jokes and events in San Andreas to fill at least a hundred hours. Should GTA4 be any more involving, there’ll be no one left to see how GTA5 turns out. The Grand Theft Auto series has become the series in which all others are judged by. No one could have guessed that a top-down, ugly looking game like the first GTA could be transformed into our generation's pinnacle franchise. So anyone hoping that the popularity of GTA is going to fizzle out may have to wait a while. Rockstar not only takes what we love about the game and throws it into a new decade for us to wreck havoc with, it adds so many new elements it’s insane. But for me, the best feature of the computer game is the precision control. When you hold down the right mouse button, you aim your gun and can see a little targeting reticule. Since I am very good at PC shooters and mouse control, I pretty much own the streets. If a bunch of gang bangers are chasing me, I spin around and let loose with several headshots, which stops them in their tracks. This is a move I could have never performed on the PS2 and opens up a host of sniper-like attacks, even with standard weapons. All in all, the PC version of the game is a quality title, right down to the amazing packaging that includes a book about the different cities you will visit and even a guide as to the fat content in the different foods you eat, so know if your character is going to get to fat if he eats too many chicken buckets or large pizzas.

Whatever the case, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas for the Xbox still gets a solid 4.5 out of 5, and folks, that isn't bad. The experience that this game provides still speaks volumes, and being able to still get around as you please, right down to doing some wheelies on your bike or bashing in a coke dealer's head, is a joy to behold. The audio presentation is top notch, and the addition of custom soundtracks is a smart one. Also, the graphics, although not perfect, still get the job done. Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas is a great game, and an excellent addition to the GTA series. Unfortunately, it can’t quite capture the flavor of the previous two. San Andreas is still San Andreas, and although the visuals failed to impress the gameplay is still as solid and engaging as ever. I would still consider this a top choice for any Xbox owner, showing perfectly what PS2 owners have been enjoying from the phenomenally successful Grand Theft Auto series. I like San Andreas as it offers so much to mess around with on an unprecedented level. Now I could lower my final score for it being a PS2 looking game or that its 6 months late but then that would be unfairly robbing the game of its deserved score which if you look at it objectively you can clearly see that the good outweighs the bad. If you have played or own the PS2 version then I would recommend that you stay clear unless you want custom soundtracks or more memory for pictures and replays.

As it stands now, it's far from perfect. But, divisive though its hip-hop ideology may be, and under-furnished some areas may feel, it still edges close enough often enough to be worthy of one of our highest marks. To put it another way, when I sit down of an evening and can't think of what to play, nine times out of ten I'm likely to settle for a Grand Theft Auto game. This one's no different. At its heart, San Andreas on the Xbox is a pretty straightforward port, but given that the original version is so great, this is no bad thing.

These faults aside, Grand Theft Auto San Andreas is an excellent game, and has continued the Grand Theft Auto legacy in a fine way. Rockstar have captured the lifestyle of the streets perfectly, adding a few colourful characters along the way, humour, plenty of cars and things to do, making this a must have title.

At a time like this when you've got a game with such massive expectations heaped upon it, it's almost futile trying to offer anything but the most positive comments you can possibly come up with. With Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, where we've been fed more pre-release information and preview opportunities than just about any game in history, it seemed impossible that the game couldn't be anything other than absolute mind blowing genius. Everything we'd seen, read and heard spelt out that this was a title so far ahead of the sorry pretenders that there simply could be no other game out there worth playing. The game of the generation. The game to end all games. Technically advanced, bigger, better, even more controversial. But you all know how it works. They would say that wouldn't they? The first commandment in the law of games is 'Thou shalt hype'.

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas is enormous, diverse, engrossing, daring, liberating, sophisticated and -- most of all -- ambitious. Yet at the same time it can be restrictive, banal, childish, unpolished and -- most of all -- frustrating. It's bigger than any console game you've ever played, better than comparably huge PC games and bolder than most Hollywood movies. Still, despite being a landmark achievement in video gaming, it's not for everyone.

There's no use in arguing about it--the Grand Theft Auto series is currently the driving force behind the video game industry. So it's understandable that new installments come under heavy scrutiny--after all, how many titles are influential enough to re-define game design almost overnight?

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas is definitely the best in the franchise. Rockstar poured absolutely everything they could dream of to do in this effort with overall success. It’s a nice evolution from Vice City, and GTA fans will spend countless weeks exploring the state. With more polish and better combat, which is central to any game, it could’ve been an inarguable masterpiece.

Overall, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas has managed to live up to the hype, and even surpass it. If you haven't played San Andreas yet, do yourself a favor and pick it up, there is no possible way you'll regret the decision.

The fact remains that without question Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas is the biggest and best GTA to date. Rock Star has reached higher than any game developer has before and has managed to catch lightning in a bottle. They've taken the proven formula of open ended gameplay combined with a tight, cinematic story and crafted a gaming experience without equal on the Playstation 2 console. With an incredibly well acted script, deep immersive story, action filled gameplay and the ability to do things the way you want to do them, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas can be soundly recommended as one the best video games available and should be on any gamers "must have" list.

Alright, we have seen most of San Andreas in the previous two GTA titles. But there is just much more you can do that just makes the game much more enjoyable. With this many things to do, San Andreas could remain in your console for months to come. If you have yet to play it on the PS2, go out to the store now. Even through all the controversy, there is a lot to love about San Andreas.

As the fifth installment of the Grand Theft Auto series, San Andreas had big shoes to fill; Vice City, the fourth title, provided gaming fun the likes of which had never been seen before. Fortunately, San Andreas meets and beats that challenge with new cars, new weapons, an added Sim-like quality, and a totally new brand of hero.

Overall, GTA: SA is the best GTA experience and the best open-ended console gameplay experience you can have offline. The customizing, the choice and the lessons of the previous titles, give the excellent grounding that a game like this needs. While it isn’t perfect and has room for much improvement, what is here is very good. As a port, the Xbox version is average but as a game it’s very good. Anyone who only owns an Xbox, and thoroughly enjoyed last year’s double pack will get exactly what they want out of this title. Anyone who has played GTA will know what they’re getting and we’re sure they won’t mind. Not to mention the game could easily exceed 100 hours of playtime.

It's been more than half a year since I ended my stay in the world of San Andreas. I had some good times in Rockstar's miniature version of my current home state, but frankly I've never really looked back. While the San Andreas experience on PS2 was truly incredible in many regards, the game itself was deeply flawed. My initial playthrough of the game alternated between engrossing and infuriating.

Even with warts and all, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas is an addictive ride well worth taking. There are so many gems in this gargantuan game that you will find yourself in the dead of night trying to finish just one more mission. That's the hallmark of a great game, but it is a major disappointment to find so many glaring flaws in Rockstar's opus. Should the series continue on the next generation of consoles (and judging by the high sales figures of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas there is no reason to assume it won't) Rockstar needs to restart from the ground up. New engine, new quality & assurance standards, and better music all need to belong to future games. Until that point, I'll recommend Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas as a thrilling, albeit frustrating, gaming experience that will have you yelling for joy one minute then screaming in anger the next. Either way you look at it, San Andreas continues the series in style.

There is still gameplay enjoyment to be found in this game, but I just did not find it as fascinating as Grand Theft Auto III or Vice City.

It must be asked...is San Andreas worth the purchase? Absolutely. But is it as fantastic as many would tell you? Not really. It's overflowing with flaws, and it seems as if many professional opinions out there are by-products of the game's immense hype. And hype is precisely the reason why I waited this long to review the game. I wasn't going to make another Vice City mistake; so once it sank in I knew where I stood regarding San Andreas. Hopefully not too many feathers were ruffled, since they make me sneeze.

Rockstar Games never ceases to amaze me. Time and time again they’ve been able to put their best foot forward, simply by clinging to a single game series and pushing ahead with it over and over again. The Grand Theft Auto series is one of the most popular and longest-running franchises still in existence, and somehow the development team has managed to avoid the fate of Tomb Raider by churning out one blockbuster after another. They did it with GTA3, they did it again with Vice City, and now they’ve done it once more with Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. How can a rehash of the same basic formula prove so successful? As GTA:SA has taught me, one does so by taking the best parts of a given game, improving them, and then adding a ridiculous amount of new features and content.

GTA: San Andreas is a milestone in sandbox gaming. It's violent and very much an adult game, and while it has gameplay flaws, the overall achievement and the fun you can have playing are pretty much unbeatable.

Essentially, this is a well done, if not perfect, PC conversion of the same game that people have been raving about having on their Playstation 2's since last fall. If you've been waiting to make sure nothing seriously bad happened in the translation, rest assured that it did not and you should go purchase this game immediately. However, if you were for whatever reason hoping for major changes or platform-specific advantages, you will be disappointed.

Those with an interest in San Andreas should definitely check it out. In my mind, the greatest fault of the game is the often inherent frustration--but for the most part, this is an epic game without equal, either in variety or in scope, and the game maintains a style all its own. Pursue and enjoy.

For the most part, the Xbox edition manages to deliver, but like a tasty dinner served in tiny portions, it leaves you wanting more. For those that previously completed the game on the PS2, expect to invest a similar number of hours (approx. 35 hours). San Andreas is just so damn huge, there's always something that you haven't seen that's just begging to be explored. If you haven't already been to Los Santos or wanted another reason to return, look no further.

Still there's nothing like cruising the countryside in a four-wheel drive, getting our wheels off the ground in San Fierro alongside the mission improvisation and freedom that has made the series such a class act. We still love the massive San Andreas dearly and Rockstar's achievements with the PS2 are admirable, but the idea is now becoming rather stale. The missions were always going to become unavoidably recycled with each and every new iteration. Only time will tell, but we think GTA's full glory days are sadly numbered.

Even with the problems in the story, San Andreas is full of opportunities to have fun. The new additions are welcome and a step in the right direction for the series. The Rock Star team outdid themselves when it came to the world of San Andreas and the new features. Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas is blast to play (mostly when you're not too worried about the missions). The game is a worthy addition to any mature adult's gaming library.

After all this, I feel I'm not even close to finishing this review because there is just so much going in San Andreas it's like 5 games in one: part RPG, part adventure, part action, part racer and part sim. And it does it just as well as the best games in any of those genres. It's daunting simply to review a game like this, nevermind give birth to it. Rockstar has created one of the best games ever released on any system...and remember, I wasn't a fan of the last two games. As I sit here staring at this page I suddenly realize that the only possible way this review can ever be finished is if you, the reader, buys the game and experiences it for yourself. I don't remember the last time I gave a game this close to a perfect score, but I stand by this one. It is a masterpiece of gaming even with it's visual flaws.

It's good, and will hold your interest, but with some slightly frustrating controls that aren't customisable, driving Duke owners to desperation, or a new controller S (effectively making it into a £55 game) it's only really slightly improved over the PS2 version. Not quite what we hoped, but a solid game that you can pick up and play for hours, or minutes.

Ultimately, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas is an absolute blast to play, if you can forgive it for not offering anything especially new to the franchise, and only if you can truly invest the time that it requires. Its demands on your leisure will be heavy, but the payback garnered through the experience is more than worth the loss of your partner, the starvation of your family pet, or the uncomfortable warm sensation spreading between your thighs. Just remember to pay the electricity bill, or you’ll never get to finish the game!

The dialogue is slick if somewhat drenched in profanity; the game world is an open-ended playground to explore; the soundtrack so rockin’ it can purchased as an 8-disc box set at retail; the packaging so deceptive and expertly designed it can masquerade as a book; the installation is painless thanks to shipping on a single DVD; the story although somewhat predictable and full of discombobulated plot points has enough twists and turns to keep my interest. So, why does Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas make me want to drive a meaty paw through my monitor?

I would still unquestionably recommend this to any Grand Theft Auto fan as "the best of the series" just because of all the sheer content it has, but I honestly cannot give Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas a decent score in good conscience just because this could have easily been so much better as a PC title.
