Hey, so it doesn't have the polygon graphics other shooters brag about. You'll still be puttin' your nose to the Grindstormer for hours.

Here is a good shooter that has all the standard types of weapons and power-ups, but doesn't really have any new gimmicks to catch your eye. This is not to say that the game isn't good. As a shooter, the graphics are very good and it plays as well as any other. Any shooter fan would be glad to add this to their collection. I hope shooters start to make a comeback among these fighting carts.

After the release of Grind Stormer/V-5 in the arcades Toaplan went out and created the first manic shmup, Batsugun. Even so, Grind Stormer/V-5 is a great game in its own right, of course. By playing the Genesis port you can tell that the system just wasn't able to handle it (or could it be terrible programming by Tengen? I don't know since it did a great job with Slap Fight). The sprite break ups (or flickering) is what hurts the game the most. You need to see the bullets if you want to survive (and if the bullets are breaking up, then how the heck are you going to dodge?). Hardcore shmup fans are definitely going to get a kick out of Grind Stormer/V-5 but the casual gamers may find little enjoyment from this Genesis port. If you really want to give it a shot you can try to find a working U.S. copy for cheap, but if you're really hardcore you can hunt down the Japanese release. A word of caution: the sprite break ups will make the game look ugly.

Lonesome shooter fans can get their hands on something for their itchy trigger fingers while still saving up for the next good game. So look at Grindstormers as a nice treat for gamers who still enjoy zapping space ships.

Ironically, your insane firepower sometimes makes the game harder, because all the missiles and support cannons tend to confuse the action. Your bombs not only clear the screen, but also provide a protective shield, so use them defensively. Visually, Grind Stormer has some ugly graphical glitches and slowdown is also a problem. The music and sound effects are so lame you probably won't notice them. Shooter fans might find it worth their while, but Grind Stormer won't appeal to casual gamers.
