In the end, I have to restate it - if you enjoyed GC, you’ll enjoy the expansion. It’s most certainly worth the small cost of shipping and handling. If only more expansion packs gave as much value for the price….

Value-wise, you can’t beat an expansion pack like this. It updates the graphics and furthers the story while giving players a solid strategic experience. That Sierra is basically giving it away free is a big plus. The only downside is that players must have the original product in order to enjoy this outing.

Un must have !
IGN (Jan 17, 2001)
But I think I'm sounding a little too harsh here because the game really is still bunch of fun when it comes down to it. Most of the levels give a bit of challenge and some diversity to the gameplay. There are quite a few different mission types during the course of the game, and while not all are totally successful, all of them provided me with a bit of entertainment. The sound and graphics are still very good and the fact that the game is free to all of us lucky enough to live in North America is a huge plus. If you own the original Ground Control, and you don't send the five bucks in to get this game, you're seriously in danger of your children falling backwards on the evolutionary ladder. I'd still recommend Dark Conspiracy to fans of Ground Control if it was the price of a regular expansion, especially with the new multiplayer modes and maps. Send in and get it if you haven't yet.
GameSpot (Jan 05, 2001)
Dedicated Ground Control players will appreciate Dark Conspiracy the most, since they're already used to the controls, the quick pacing, and the problems of the original game, all of which carry over into the expansion. Experienced Ground Control players will be entertained with many of the new units, such as the Phoenix flamethrowing hover tank and foot soldiers. They'll also like being able to get the expansion at a very low price (though all they get is the game CD, which contains an online version of the Dark Conspiracy manual). Otherwise, if you're new to Ground Control, Dark Conspiracy is a great additional value if you haven't yet decided to try out what was one of the most intense strategy games released last year.

ActionTrip (Jan 31, 2001)
Apart from that, there are indeed few novelties. If somebody showed me the thing after a couple of months, I wouldn't be able to tell if it were the original game or the add-on. Not even the new Phoenix fraction could change the feeling you get from this game... you only get slightly different units and weapons. For instance, the plasma grenadiers will now counter the old torpedo infantry, etc. All is well balanced just like it used to be in the original and there will be no need to spend much time in order to get used to the new stuff. I must admit I really loved commanding the heavy tanks, especially in the first missions where they are practically unbeatable. I easily overpowered entire armies with only two tanks in a line and an APC re-supplying them from behind. Apart from the Phoenix, the well known Crayven and Order of the New Dawn units got some enhancements as well.

Gaming Age (Sep 05, 2004)
Weird videogame politics aside, I really don't know why Sierra Studios and High Voltage Software decided to offer Dark Conspiracy as free add-on software. The production quality, save the cg portraits in mission briefings, is as high as what was found in the original Ground Control. It is obvious some work went into this expansion; so why is it free? This free offer may be a bit ominous in regards to the future of the Ground Control series, but why ask why?
