Aanrader - hiyaa!

If you love wild west movies, you will no doubt enjoy GUN which puts you in the role of a western movie hero. The gameplay is fresh and fun, and while the ride is short, it's very exciting while it lasts. Excellent production values in the graphics and sound department really add to the believability of the story and game world, and the side quests add some depth and longevity to a somewhat short but highly entertaining main story. The most important question to ask of any game is, was it fun? And GUN answers with a resounding yes. If you're into action game and especially if you like the wild west setting, you owe it to yourself to give this game a shot. Giddyup!

Gun is everything it claims to be, a gritty and violent western shooter. But as well as this, it delivers probably one of the greatest stories that a video game has ever tried. The sounds and voice acting are superb, and the game play and controls work well enough to not detract from the fun. Graphically, the game could have been a little better as well. The game does suffer from lack of replay value and its length is on the short side, but, overall, Gun is an experience that should not be missed…if you can handle it.

Breaking away from over-used spaghetti western archetypes, Gun draws its six shooters to deliver one of the most subversive, gripping, and powerful experiences to ever grace the West. Simply put, Sergio Leone would have killed for a script like this.

Gun offers some variety in a packed genre, something anyone can appreciate. You can finish the game in about ten hours, and that is doing every single side mission available, so it might leave you wanting a bit more. But nobody should feel like they did not get their money's worth with this well-made title.

For Neversoft, Gun is an ambitious adventure--a complete 180 for the Tony Hawk-famed developer. There are horses in place of skateboards, cowboy hats instead of goofy skate caps, and believable western characters take the place of Bam Margera and Wee Man. And there are guns...lots of guns. Even though Neversoft has been able to keep the Tony Hawk series relatively fresh over the last few years, the Activision owned company needed a new baby. Gun is the answer, and while it also releases simultaneously on current-generation consoles, make no mistake--the Xbox 360 version is the one you want to play. It is by no means the next-gen killer app (rest assured that you won't get one until 2006), but it does provide a robust, six-shootin' good time.

Gun is a neat little package. You're treated to an interesting plot, fun, sandbox-style gameplay, and atmosphere thick enough to choke a horse. It's honestly one of the most fun titles out there, and occasionally so over-the-top as to be downright hilarious. Gun fighting on horseback is fun, too, and is reason enough to give Gun a try. It nails the Deadwood-style Western pretty well, and isn't the kind of game to pull its punches. It's big, it's gory, it's violent, and it's fun. Go get it.

GUN is one of those games doesn’t really do anything new. It’s got the “sandbox” concept that’s been aped by all game makers since Grand Theft Auto III. It makes you shoot lots of things (both in third- and first-person). It has platforming sequences, it makes you use the right shoulder button to pull the trigger, and the left to throw the Western equivalent of grenades (mmm… alcohol explosives.) It makes you “protect” things for predetermined amounts of time, it has hints of stealth sequences, and, by God, it has fetch quests. By all rights, it’s mediocre and paint-by-numbers, right?

GUN received a lot of very hot press prior to its release, particularly in print ads in lots of male-targeted magazines. You probably saw the literature: blood-splattered banners over a two-page spread of quotes and amazing screenshots touting a true Western experience. It was a slick campaign and very exciting. But rather than make me slaver for that moment when I might finally drop that disk into my tray (oh, get your mind out of the gutter…I’m being serious), the extra attention made me wary.

So what's the Ugly? Honestly not much. A few missions are somewhat tedious, but there are few major complaints for GUN. Things could be brushed up a little here or there, and a bigger world would be nice, but some of the details are perfect. The story is good, the casting is great, and though the actual combat could be a bit more unique, the details show through (such as the ability to grab and kill townspeople, eventually upsetting their attitude towards you, or the random bandits that assail you as you roam the countryside). With so surprisingly few Wild West games out there, most of them being sub-standard, GUN is worthy of a spot in the top tier. Though the experience may not be long, nor is it as epic as it's made out to be, what's there is genuinely entertaining most of the time and faithfully captures the rough-and-tough atmosphere of the frontier.

What really sets Gun apart from anything released in the last little bit is how effortlessly it seems to present itself with authenticity. The game may not be too hard, the graphics not as next-gen as anyone would hope, no multiplayer to speak of, but regardless, Gun is easily one of the best titles released on the 360 (or on any other console for that matter). Mature gamers looking for something truly different (and well made) should not hesitate at all in picking up Gun. If you have a choice, definitely choose the 360 version, but Gun should be played and enjoyed more for its story, characters and mechanics and not its graphics. Neversoft may not wander too often from its bread and butter franchise, but if Gun is any indication of what they’re capable of in between Tony Hawk games, one can only hope they stray again very soon.

GUN is the best western action-adventure game to date. With its go-anywhere, shoot/do-anything gameplay, it’s like Grand Theft Auto Wild-Wild West style. The graphics are a big disappointment, but the amazing animation, presentation, and sound make up for its downfalls.

GUN offers just a glimpse of the main character's life. However, the little glimpse that we do get, is dramatic and adventurous than more people can handle in their lifetime. From the outset, he loses his ‘father' Ned to a steamboat mishap, only to discover that in fact he had not been his father. From here he's sent on a mission to avenge Ned's death, discover his real past, and also to manage to help two cities of the Wild West: Dodge and Empire. Along the way, Colton encounters his share of crooked cops, gun-slinging hookers, vengeful natives, and not to mention one seriously tainted ‘priest.' All resulting in a domino-effect set of encounters that will ultimately help reveal his true history and knock back some corrupt leadership along the way.

Gun versetzt das Spielprinzip der Grand Theft Auto-Serie in den Wilden Westen. Als Colton White rächen Sie den Tod Ihres Ziehvaters und klären das Mysterium Ihrer eigenen Herkunft. GUN’s a great game. Even if you don’t care for shooters or if the only Wild Bunch you know is the bunch of bastards that vandalized your car, you’ll find something to tickle your fancy in Gun. As the stranger entered the dusty streets of Empire City a gunfight erupts between two men that had locked eyes and suddenly drew their guns. The stranger doesn’t even bat an eye as the gunfight ensues since this kind of thing happens often in nearly every big town, and as one of the men drops dead he climbs off his horse and enters a casino where his life will change. This is the world of Gun, a western game designed by the same good folks that have brought us many a Tony Hawk Pro Skater game but before you start picturing the gun-slinging hero performing a 360 Boneless or a mad grind on a hitching post with his horse this is a bullet-fueled action game.

Neversoft swung for the fences with GUN, but fell short. Graphicalproblems, an incredibly short story, and an overall lack of oomph keepthis game from being a classic, but it’s still makes a solid rental.Rockstar’s western, Red Dead Revolver, offers more story and amultiplayer mode, but disappointing gameplay and a hackneyed plot makeGUN a better game. Ah the good old Western. In movies the genre was entertaining audiences with exciting gun battles long before videogame makers sought to do the same. Thanks to one of the best storylines we've seen in quite a while (as well as a heaping helping of good old-fashioned violence), Gun isn't a gaming experience that we'll soon forget. You'll likely be so enthralled by the riveting story that you simply won't notice the hours flying by. Of course, that's also due in no small part to the fact that the game is unsatisfyingly short. There's worse things to be, however, and this is one of those rare games that actually deserves a sequel. If they can give us more of what we want next time, Neversoft might be able to create gaming's first Western masterpiece.

GUN is an amazing combination of television series Deadwood and Grand Theft Auto series, with lots of twists, turns, and amazing game play. The 360 version seems to be scoring lower than average in various review sites, but the biggest complaint is that they didn't do enough to call it a 360 game. I doubt many would fall into the category of buying this twice, and would be more like me, coming to this game fresh. In that case, I can highly recommend it. The graphics are good, the game play excellent, the audio great, and overall it's just plain old fun. It's something you can just pick up on some day and play for a few hours, and revisit a couple of months later.

While violence is usually not the main draw of a game for me, it certainly made Gun a memorable experience for me. It definitely wasn't the most impressive Xbox 360 launch title, but I certainly got a kick out of being John Wayne for a few days.

For all of its greatness, it's hard to look at Gun and see a $60 purchase. It's admittedly short, which becomes one of its best assets and biggest disappointments. It's enjoyable enough that a few extra hours couldn't have hurt, but seeing how every nearly action scene pushes the story along, it's acceptable. This is one of Neversoft's best, and as far as 3rd person action titles go, it's hard to imagine one more engrossing than Gun.

Xbox 360Daily Game
It’s easy to see that Neversoft wanted to include more content in Gun, be it environments, side missions or non-playable characters (the towns are downright empty), but deadlines have a tendency to get in the way. The graphics, too, seem like they could’ve been improved with more time, particularly when you notice the difference between the great horse animations and the so-so characters. But time is often not on developers’ side. Fortunately, gamers do have time on their side, and we can hold out hope that the sequel, presuming there is one, will improve on the shortcomings of this outing. The Gun series, like a barrel of whiskey (and the Tony Hawk franchise) is bound to improve, but even this first batch is worth your attention. Just not for full price.

WindowsActionTrip
Finally, Gun offers quite few hours of playtime. Considering that there is no multiplayer mode to speak of, the fact that you can upgrade your hero (buy better equipment and beef up the stats with side missions) and that the main story is satisfyingly lengthy, makes Gun a pretty good purchase for PC owners. I don't think you'll go wrong if you shell out your cash for this one. Gun is a far better game than I had initially suspected, and was given less credit by the online press than it actually deserves.

GUN shows that Neversoft has the potential to be very successful once the Tony Hawk well has run completely dry and they have to move on to other projects. Sure, GUN isn’t without faults -- the gunplay could use some tightening and the environments could be filled in a little better, but those flaws are more than covered by an amazing story and great voicing. GUN is a worthwhile experience that shows that Neversoft’s inevitable future of non-Tony Hawk projects have promise.

After Grand Theft Auto III hit stores and changed the industry forever, we saw varying levels of copycat titles. It started with the mafia/gangster bunch, then came the "make any game that takes place in a city" free-roaming group, and now finally we're getting to a point where a free-roaming game can work in a context that is not a direct rip-off of Rockstar's series. The interesting thing about Gun, however, is that it mixes broad free-roaming aspects with some of the most tightly scripted missions we've seen in any game -- quite an achievement for an original game from a company known for skateboarding titles.

Video games that take place in the Old West are an interesting breed. It's a subgenre that hasn't really found its way yet, although it's not for lack of trying. We've seen plenty of titles that attempt to put their own unique spin on the genre's familiar themes, only to fall far short. When Neversoft (a developer known primarily for its stellar work on the Tony Hawk series) announced that they'd be trying their hand at creating a violent, gritty Western, some people scoffed. Now that we've seen the results, however, it's obvious that they know exactly what they are doing. Gun features everything anyone could want in a Western, and it's only major negative is the fact it just can't satisfy our desire for more.

Gun, however, is not the Western to beat all Westerns. Remove it from the genre, take it purely as a shooter, and it's less impressive. The vast landscape is too often vacant of action. The side missions are easy, even simplistic. And while the shooting aspects of Gun comprise an excellent set of weapons and the fun, arcade mechanism of QuickDraw, the lack of precision and wily controls will leave many gamers scratching their heads. What's the dealio? Step up to the bar, cowboy.

At its best, the western is the genre that delivers classics like High Noon and Unforgiven. These stories strip characters and civilization down to the bare essentials, the better to highlight the best and worst about humanity. Gun is not one of those stories. But it is the sort of western that keeps company with Hang 'Em High and Silverado -- a great action tale that delivers the goods.

Basically, Gun pays homage to the old Western movie genre, and at that, it achieves the goal better than any previous game. Sure, there's not a lot of competition, but Gun holds up well next to other third-person shooters as well. Plus, we could ride the horses for hours.

Neversoft has had sweeping success with the Tony Hawk Skateboarding franchise. So much so, in fact, that the development team has had little time planning out different games to create. GUN is their first attempt in a long time to break away from the TH series; and while GUN features an outstanding cast of actors and a storyline that rivals major motion pictures, the game is a mixed bag of creative gameplay elements like Quickdraw and somewhat simplified fighting scenarios and campaign.

After seven years of solely making Tony Hawk games, Neversoft, the Southern California developer that's made a mint on perfecting the best skateboarding games on the planet, has branched into new territory with a rowdy, spirited action game based on the Wild West. The subject matter of Old West shooters is hugely popular with gamers, who anxiously awaited Rockstar's Red Dead Revolver last year and have shown substantial interest in more Western goodness. Now, not only is the newly created IP on all the current gen systems, Neversoft stretched itself to put Gun on Xbox 360.

Gun is audibly and visually an expert game with excellent characters and some great fighting. Cut scenes, which have a tendency to be uninteresting, are one of the best things about this game. The gameplay is good and will have you paying close attention, until it’s over as soon as it started. Don’t blink, you may miss something!

It has been quite a while since the last decent game set in the Wild West was released. For me, that was Red Dead Revolver which even now is still a great but unsung game. GUN has picked up Red's trail but will it be able to hunt him down, become allies or the new kid taste defeat?

All in all, I’d have to classify this game in the “must rent” category. There’s no replay value whatsoever; therefore, don’t shell out the cash to buy it. Still, there is little opportunity to play anything else quite like this, and it can be finished during a routine rental period. I have high hopes for GUN 2, if there ever is one.

Gun is linear in nature, but there are side missions to help you pad your "stats". There's an easy difficulty available for those who just want to enjoy the ride, and you can save at any time. The game features a lot of hot, dusty locations, making this ideal for your summer gaming pleasure. Gun is not the most addicting game in the world, but if you play a few missions here and there, you'll find it well worth your time.

All this, in the end, is what your lower-class card rooms would call 'piddly sh*t'. Gun is a solid game that, on all platforms, performs admirably, draws you into the story, takes itself (and you) seriously, and does the genre proud. It's too thin around the waist to really tangle with the big boys, but let's all pray that some new development house picks up Neversoft's Western-themed token, to cash it in wisely at some gaming den of sin.

Neversoft gained notoriety as “the house that Tony Hawk built” but that would be a mistake. There were other games before that the developer had worked on, such as converting the original MDK to the PlayStation, as well as the first of Activision’s Spider-Man titles. GUN is being seen by many as a “break” for Neversoft from the Tony Hawk games, but in reality, it is just another game – an ambitious one at that.

Essentially, if you own an HDTV, then Gun on the Xbox 360 is definitely the version to get, since there's no reason to play such a good game in an inferior version, but it's extremely disappointing to play this game on a normal television and see that it only looks a tiny bit better that what we got out of previous generation versions. When you have the exact same game, costing $10 more than the current generation version, on a system that costs a lot of money and is supposed to be producing mind boggling visuals, our mind boggles for a different reason.

Despite a great presentation that'll likely give a very positive first impression, Gun ultimately offers too little content for it to be a truly satisfying game. Most all of the right ingredients are here in some quantity. But the hastily delivered storyline (which, fittingly, concludes with an incredibly abrupt ending) and the lack of any real depth to the gameworld make Gun much better suited for some quick, fleeting thrills instead of for the long haul.

Gun does a good job mixing in classic Western film situations – sniping a hangman’s noose, for example, taken right from The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly – into the context of the game to make it feel familiar and new at the same time. It’s just unfortunate it’s over all too soon, because there is some good action here – the execution is just a bit off. However, it’s still good to see Neversoft branch out from the Tony Hawk series. I know Neversoft was also involved with the early Spider-Man games and a couple other action games in the Playstation era, but Neversoft has been typecast as “that Tony Hawk developer.” They’ve laid a good foundation with Gun because the basic mechanics are sound but a more populated game world with more to do and a more extensive story would bring the whole experience from a rental on a slow weekend to an outright purchase.

Xbox 360Planet Xbox 360
In the end this is a fun game overall. With a quick draw to die for, a plot which has betrayal, love, greed and death all rolled into a quest for vengeance, there really isn’t much else to ask for out of this type of game. There are loads of sub missions and you can collect bigger and more powerful guns as the game goes on, also the Xbox 360 offers you GamerScore which means you must do those discussed side missions just to get the extra 20 or 30 points to show off your skill online. This really is how a Western shooter is supposed to be made, the players at Neversoft have shown that they can do more than skateboarding games. This is a mature rated game and rightly so, you’ll see buckets of blood and even though the graphics are nothing out of this world for this console the game is still a decent launch title for any 360 owner.

Windows2404.org PC Gaming
Gun is a great idea, a cinematic shooter that takes place in an under-represented genre: the Wild West. The execution, however, is just a notch above bad, and some of the game's elements are just silly. The game puts you in the third-person shoes of Colton White, a mild-mannered frontiersman whose father's recent death starts him off on a misadventure in the old west. Colton must face off against an evil railroad tycoon who rides around the countryside in a locomotive with a gigantic skull on the front.

WindowsComputer Gaming World (CGW)
Gun certainly tries hard, but its console roots will kill it for some PC gamers. Controls are fuzzy, and the overforgiving targeting, combined with week enemy A.I., makes it nearly impossible to miss. The game is also extremely easy. Even if you do all the side missions (the ranching missions get particularly fun), you can still breeze through this entire game in something like 10 hours. The graphics, too, suffer from console-itis, with blocky characters often “skating” on the surface or getting stupidly trapped in bad collision detection. But still...the last good cowboy game was LucasArts’ Outlaws, way back in 1997. So who’s griping? You get to do plenty of horseback riding, the “quick draw” shooting nurtures your inner Clint Eastwood, and there ain’t one danged alien or Nazi in sight Yee-haw.

Had Neversoft put as much time and care into developing Gun’s game world as it did with its story, this title would be up there with the likes of GTA. As it stands, it’s an entertaining game that fills a void—but only for a few hours.

While it lasts Gun is great fun, full of fast action and a cool story ... but it's over far too early to recommend as a full price purchase. Even if you're the type of gamer who wants to do and see everything, getting 100% in this game won't take you more than an afternoon. But even though it's short this is still one experience that is worth going through, especially if you're the type of person that wishes there were more western titles to choose from. There's so much potential here that once can only hope that Neversoft decides to take some time and give us a sequel with enough meat on the bone to keep us interested for longer than six hours. This is a good try, but it's no Deadwood.

GUN may be short-lived, but I love my westerns and it has a quality story and lots of enjoyable blood-soaked gameplay. It’s a more traditional and authentic tale than Red Dead Revolver’s wild, weird west, and allows a lot more freedom too – it’s just a shame that the play area isn’t even bigger and there isn’t more to do when you tire of shooting stuff (and you will).

One of the only ways a developer can cut loose and buy themselves a sliver of creative freedom in these franchise-obsessed times is to make itself so bankable that the billion dollar, risk-averse publisher can't say no. After seven multi-million-selling Tony Hawk games on every platform in existence, you can't say Neversoft hasn't paid its dues to Activision; a pet project like Gun was well overdue. Evidently there are only a finite number of extreme sports titles a developer can stand making before it creatively self-combusts.

PlayStation 2Pro-G
There's no denying that GUN is an entertaining game. The controls are tight and the action never lets up, but considering the setting and story, it deserved a game of epic proportions (in length and scope) and it's hard not to feel a little disappointed. The hype surrounding the game and its adult nature should ensure that the series has a bright future, so hopefully Neversoft can build on these simple beginnings and create a game that does proper justice to the Wild West Setting. GUN can't possibly boast to be a game of the year, but it'll entertain anyone who gives it a chance, even if it's only for a few days.

GUN is a game that has more potential than what is offered. Something seems wrong about the game, as if stuff had been cut out in order to make it to the holiday buying season. It’s not a bad game, but one that will leave the player (especially on the Xbox 360) disappointed.

Xbox 360Gaming Age
The game play is a lot of fun, and there is a reasonable amount of stuff to do in the wild world that is the game's setting. Like I said before, the graphics are not 360 caliber at all. It is rendered in high definition, but it doesn't look like they actually worked on the models or textures when bringing it out to the 360. It's disappointing to be sure, because when you get right down to it, this could be an absolutely excellent game. With better graphics and a tad longer story this game might have been a contender game of the year in some category or another. As it stands though, Gun is a fun game and you really should try it out even if only as a rental.

Recently released for most other gaming platforms, Gun, a Western-themed action adventure from Tony Hawk series-developer Neversoft, is now available for the Xbox 360, complete with a premium price tag and implicit promises of next-generation gaming quality. But all you get is the same decent game you could be playing on a PlayStation 2 right now, except that if you run it on a high-definition TV, all the flaws in its graphical presentation stick out like a sore thumb. The game itself is somewhat more commendable than the quality of the translation. Featuring an open-ended environment that you can traverse on foot or on horseback, plenty of gory shoot-outs, numerous optional side missions, and an interesting story, Gun initially seems like a 19th-century Grand Theft Auto.

Activision really is challenging EA as the king of the conversion at the moment. But while it's one thing to publish ports of high-end PC games (namely Quake 4 and Call of Duty 2) for the 360, it's another thing entirely to release a pretty loveless, no-frills conversion of a current gen game and then expect people to pay full whack for it. Colour us bemused.

The second Gun desperately needs a revised formula. Give us Clint Eastwood as a protagonist, not John Wayne. Or better yet, Lee Van Cleef. Make horses more than a faster, safer means of travel. Let us pull off stunts with them like diving out of the saddle or jumping across rooftops; reward us for our accomplishments with a big lavish message flashing across the screen. I know this is a desert we’re talking about, but add some color and variety to it. Make the side missions more interesting – I emphasize, these are some of the worst side missions I’ve ever played. Overhaul the workings of boss fights so I don’t feel like I’m back in the ’80s. And if it’s not too much to ask, develop the fucking characters.
