I love this game; it's a true "Gamer's Game". Buy it, play it, and cherish it; they don't come around often. Sadly by not aiming at the casual marketplace, games like these tend not to sell very well. I pray to the gods of gameplay that it sells enough to warrant a sequel. I simply must have more.
Gunvalkyrie continues Smilebit's charge into the future of quality, original games. The graphics are state-of-the-art; the control is unique, challenging, and rewarding; the music is solid but not too memorable; and ultimately your fun will be measured by your ability to master the gameplay. This game reminds me of something Treasure is capable of making...
The action in Gunvalkyrie is sudden, persistent, and unceasingly intense. The story provides an atmospheric backdrop, but it is not directly integrated into the game a la Halo or Half-Life. While Gunvalkyrie allows full 3D movement, its style is most reminiscent of rail shooters such as Panzer Dragoon and Star Fox; each level consists of a linear mission (which is usually "destroy all enemies!"), and the levels—though often quite large and occasionally very open—are deliberately crafted to sustain the games feverish pace.
The subtlety of GUNVALKYRIE's mechanics is where it gets its replay value. For example, Kelly's Drive Gun has two settings: pinpoint and spread that you toggle on and off with the X button. The catch is there's no visible indication on your heads up display to tell you which setting you've selected. The only way to tell is to shoot and watch where the bullets land. This isn't an omission by Smilebit, it's an indication of how you're supposed to approach GUNVALKYRIE.
Sega's Gunvalkyrie is like the beginning of a relationship with one of those good girls. You like her enough to spend some dough on her, and she's pretty, exciting, and blast to hang out with. However, you know deep down that you're going to have to put some serious time in before she lets the real fun begin. Such is Gunvalkyrie. While this tantalizing effort from Smilebit contains a whole lot of gaming goodness, there is no reason to jump onboard its potentially dynamic ride unless you have the time to virtually marry the game.
Visually, GUNVALKYRIE is quite stunning, and is among the best Xbox graphics to date. For starters, the character models look really, really good. You’ll most appreciate this at the beginning of the stages when the camera zooms in around your character showing all the nice details of your Gearskin. Speaking of the camera, I think it’s a pretty bold statement by saying it didn’t give me a single problem throughout the game. Since this is usually the downfall of 3rd person games, that is a huge compliment. The bug models are good themselves, yet they do leave a bit to be desired. I guess with so many on screen a few sacrifices had to be made; so it’s understandable.
As I said before, you will either like or hate. You will love it or leave it. I recommend like and loving if you're a hardcore gamer or a fan of hard science fiction. Don't even think of trying to find an opinion in between because you will drive yourself mad. If it weren't for the controls, this would have been a perfect game to add to your gaming collection or Sega collection, but I figure Sega spent too much time on graphics and not enough time realizing that "Hey, these controls are worse than Tomb Raider!" Once you get into the game you will find yourself immersed into the story and almost forgetting about the shoddy controls. Notice I just said almost. Gorgeous like Nicole Kidman. Sorry, had to say it again.
Wer sich wieder einmal wirklich in einem Shoot 'em Up festbeißen will, ist hier genau richtig. Allerdings befürchten wir, dass Gun Valkyrie dem durchschnittlichem Spieler fast zu schwer ist. Am Besten, ihr leiht euch das Spiel aus und gebt ihm eine Chance - Vor allem Fans der Ballerspiele alter Schule sollten begeistert sein.
This game has a lot of faults, including the sub par sound and drab enemies. However, the gameplay more than makes up for it. At times, Gunvalkarie can be so intense that you will totally forget about everything that is lacking.
La sensación que te deja es que podría haber dado más de sí. Si se hubieran depurado los errores de control que sufre el juego, o se hubiera aplicado más variedad al tema de armas o enemigos, estaríamos hablando de un grandísimo título. Es cierto que técnicamente está muy cuidado, una ambientación sobresaliente, unos gráficos muy llamativos y de lo mejorcito que hoy en día se puede ver en la consola de Microsoft, con permiso de Panzer Dragoon Orta, Splinter Cell y Halo. También destacaría su duración, que la catalogaría de media, no estamos ante un juego que se acaba en pocos días. Por contra, tenemos un control muy pesado, unos escenarios y enemigos quizás demasiado repetitivos y un atisbo de monotonía que le bajan algunos puntos. Lo dicho, no es un mal juego pero no está en la lista de imprescindibles, eso sí, la decisión es tuya. Comprarlo no sería un error pero quizás hay algunos títulos que lo superan en la lista de prioridades.
Un jeu à la fois agaçant et terriblement jouissif. Dommage que son niveau de difficulté soit parfois si élevé allongeant de manière artificielle une durée de vie déjà assez limitée. C'est en tous les cas fun et défoulant, en bref, à découvrir même si c'est pour être oublié assez rapidement.
Action-Fans, die auf Spiele wie MDK 2 oder auch den Sega-Klassiker Space Harrier abfahren, werden an Gunvalkyrie auf jeden Fall Gefallen finden. Allerdings müssen sie auch eine schwer zu meisternde Steuerung in Kauf nehmen, die bei einigen sicherlich einen Großteil des anfänglichen Enthusiasmus in Frustmomente verwandelt. Dafür wird man jedoch durch ein cleveres Leveldesign, einen stimmigen Soundtrack und Action ohne Ende entschädigt. Unter dem Strich bleibt Gunvalkyrie aber doch leicht hinter den Erwartungen zurück, denn die gnadenlose Action reicht nicht ganz aus, um die Missionsknappheit zu kaschieren.
Nach Jet Set Radio Future veröffentlicht Sega sein zweites XBox Spiel. Diesmal jagt der Spieler aber nicht mit Rollerblades durch eine moderne Stadt sondern befreit einen Planeten von einer Insektenplage. Ob Gun Valkyrie nun ein ähnlicher Erfolg wie JSRF ist, zeigt das folgende Review.
Many games today allow the player to get straight into them and finish them without ever having to put any real work in. You could be poor at games and still finish a lot, as many of them make it harder not to finish them than it is to finish them. Gun Valkyrie then comes along and asks the player to learn a whole new control scheme that is different to anything they have used before or fail miserably at the game. While the developers have made a game that, once mastered, is excellent, the initial difficulty will be too tough for most gamers.
Gunvalkyrie is almost a good game, and it won't be surprising to see some people looking past the game's problems and having some fun with it. It could have controlled better, and the mission objectives could have been more exciting, but it's still a cool-looking game with a reasonably cool premise, despite its reliance on ultraclichéd gigantic insects. A rental should easily determine which side of the fence you'll fall on.

Conceptually, it’s from a school of game design that I despise, one that believes that players really like to run around for hours in a generic, futuristic environment trying to figure out how to open doors. I wish they had focused more on the utilizing the abilities of the characters’ mecha suits, instead of creating a ho-hum action game that you’ll forget about the second you turn it off. Also, the targeting system is just plain awful.
Based on Manga animation, with an interesting European aesthetic, GunValkyrie's action is staggeringly fast and intense. Two genetically enhanced athletes in robotic armour speed around with rockets on their backs. Early on, the weapons and rocket packs are quite tame, but the stakes and the speed increase quickly. But there is no firstperson perspective, so the entire game must be played in an uncomfortable overtheshoulder view. The character's helmet obscures the horizon directly ahead, so you must quickly learn to zip around and constantly dodge sideways to avoid running into obstacles.

I’d like all of you to do me a favor. Just pretend that Sega didn’t release this game. Would you answer the door if you knew it was a door-to-door salesman? Of course not. The same theory applies here. If someone asks you about Gun Valkyrie, say something like, "Oh…You mean that Enix SNES game?" or "Gun Valkyrie? What are you talking about, crackhead?!" The world would definitely be a better place without it.
As much as I like the game's storyline and relentlessly impressive visuals, Gun Valkyrie is marred by feeble level design with huge, trussed up rooms connected by pointless corridors, and a control system which redefines the word 'awkward'. And it's too hard. I'm not bad at games, but even I've only beaten this one with Saburouta under absolutely perfect conditions. If you fancy a casual blaster, this just isn't it, especially when it will cost you anything up to £45. If you must buy absolutely everything that Sega ever puts its name to then go for it, but for the rest of you, unless you're a die-hard shoot 'em up fan, steer well clear. The Xbox has much better games than Gun Valkyrie.
