J.K. Rowling has found a way to transform people of all ages into devoted Harry Potter followers. Electronic Arts, on the other hand, can’t seem to create a Harry Potter game that appeals to anyone. Although you still spend a great deal of time chasing after runaway jellybeans, the Goblet of Fire has a much heavier focus on button-mashing action than the previous entries in the series. In a way, it seems that EA is trying to rekindle the success it had with The Lord of the Rings games. This is also the first console version that allows players to play as Ron and Hermione. Cooperative play is included, which is a nice perk, but not even having two friends at your side can overcome the boredom of zapping small woodland creatures with a wand. The team-based obstacles are greatly overused and usually have you doing stupid things like putting out fires. Goblet of Fire is the best console Harry Potter action game yet, but it’s still a far cry from good.

However with only a few minor details as the only weak points, Electronic Arts did a bang up job porting the Harry Potter storyline over to the PSP. The execution of the magic spells and the top notch presentation makes this game a definite buy for Harry Potter fans and for those gamers looking for a simply fun title to pop into their lonely PSP.

Target audience not withstanding, the Goblet of Fire is still a fun little action romp, and given the lack of true cooperative multiplayer games these days, one that should attract both the loyal Potter fans and multiplayer gamers.

PlayStation 2Digital Entertainment News (den)
In the end, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire accomplishes what it sets out to do: it offers young fans who’ve seen the movie a chance to play through the same story. The only real downside is that that might not be quite enough to hold the interest of gamers who’ve hit their teenage years and beyond. So it’s good to keep in mind that those gamers are not EA’s primary audience here. And for their intended audience, this game is good enough not to be a disappointment; not bad, considering that EA’s having to chuck a new one out every year, right around the time each new movie is released.

Fans of Harry Potter will have no reservations about buying this game, but for anyone else it may be better to rent it first. It’s got plenty of extras and reasons to come back if you’re familiar with the books and films. It would be great to tie it in a little better with more story, but there are plenty of missions to play through. If you’ve played all the previous Harry Potter games expect something a little different, but good nonetheless. If you’re not a huge fan you may want to try before you buy.

While not many who aren’t a fan of all things Harry Potter will find a reason to play Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, wizard-wannabes under the age of 15 will be infatuated. A sharp, visual style and a great co-op mode that overcomes the average action gameplay provide a wonderfully wizardly good time despite a too-short and too-easy escapade.

For its shortcomings and benefits, it is what it is — a more action-based game based on a book and movie of the same style. It is not deep and meticulous like others, but it has plenty of energy and thrills for a different mood and design. How exciting would it be if the same game was created year after year? Change is good, though I think they can put a little more in it to separate it from similar genres. Still, as it is, it’s likely to cast a spell on fans and fans of the genre, alike.

XboxPlay Magazine
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire is a highly polished, drop-dead gorgeous, by-the-numbers scripted action game brought to you in stunning detail, exuding the mood and gothic allure of the film almost perfectly. After choosing Hermione, Harry, the awkwardly pubescent Ron (or all three in co-op), disciples set about the business of dispensing nightmare creatures by collecting Bertie Bott’s Every-Flavor Beans to activate cards that bolster the trio’s casting and defensive powers as they combine spells, charms and jinxes to take on a cauldron of film-endemic missions, including some eye-catching encounters with the Hungarian Horntail dragon. The trio’s animations are somewhat limited and they skate a bit making for some clumsy moments, but otherwise Goblet’s a fine, if not predictable, bit of movie gaming.

As a platformer aimed at the younger crowd of Potter fans, The Goblet of Fire does a good job at delivering an experience that is in line with the plot of the books. Even if you're an older fan of the Harry Potter books, the game is still worth checking out, especially if you've got two other friends to play the game in three-player cooperative mode. It's definitely not quite as awe-inspiring an experience as seeing the films, but if you want a more interactive take on what it might be like to be in the world of magic, The Goblet of Fire video game will suit you just fine.

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire is a solid action game that should appeal to fans of the books and films etc. Older fans might find the games a little on the simple side and certainly if you've played a few action games what you'll find here will give you no problems at all. Of course if you're looking for a more challenging experience with some challenging puzzles, you may be disappointed. Still the overall presentation of the game is very good and Harry Potter fans will no doubt be satisfied with how the game has turned out.

As Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, and Hermione Granger enter their fourth year at Hogwarts School of Wizardry and Witchcraft, new challenges await them, both "professional" and personal. The Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire video game sticks strictly to the adventure aspects of the story, never touching upon the sticky relationship drama that makes up key subplots in the novel and the film. You'll still have plenty to do in the game, though: Guide the trio of young wizards through various locales, fight magical creatures, solve puzzles, and usher Harry through the Triwizard Tournament challenges just before a climactic showdown with Lord Voldemort himself. Though the collection aspects of the game are a drag at times, The Goblet of Fire still does enough to keep Potter fans engaged throughout.

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire does what you expect from such a game. It doesn't stray away from the storyline and characters we know from the book and movie, offers the necessary action and adventure, and adds to that the obligatory collecting anger that's so predictable with console games.

The game's not perfect. There are some camera issues. Some AI issues. And I really would have preferred to have more control over spells. But it still arrives as a solid entry to the series. Kids will probably like it a lot. Older players, on the other hand, might want to stick with the book and movie, as both are significantly more engaging.

We don't have our pocket calculators handy, but we're pretty sure that the Harry Potter franchise has made more than a gajillion dollars since author J.K. Rowling rolled out the first book. The story of the Boy Who Lived and his trusty friends has captivated millions, whether the tale has unfolded on paper, on the silver screen, or on the boob tube in wholly interactive form. The worldwide phenomenon has of course been designed by Rowling, but both Warner Bros. and Electronics Arts have done their respective parts in maintaining the wizarding craze, WB with a series of blockbuster movies and EA with a stream of complementary videogames for all major platforms.

The gameplay mechanics in place do work well. Moving one's chosen character around the levels and fighting enemies is intuitive and enjoyable, if easy. Many of the stages scroll to the left and right, as well as forward and backward, but gamers never have control of the camera system. This is occasionally a problem because there are times when players will want to see what lies ahead, but can't. Worse, every so often enemies will attack off-screen before the on-track camera eventually spotlights them.

Harry Potter has been a media icon for the last several years. Everyone knows about this character, beloved by millions of fans. Either you are a fan yourself or you are trying to sit out the media uproar. There is little middle ground between these extremes. It's no surprise that Harry has starred in a series of movies and video games. The latest of these, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, is a valiant attempt to release a game-based-on-a-movie by Electronic Arts’ United Kingdom. While this game has several entertaining features and decent gameplay it is not as awe inspiring as other recent titles. Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire can be fun to play, but it doesn’t quite have that spark of magic fans will expect.

I would recommend renting this game for a weekend. Although there are a lot collectibles to gather you may not care to replay the game just to compulsively collect everything. The rewards are just not worth the effort in my opinion. Otherwise it's a good revisiting of the movie or novel.

The constant action means the Harry Potter series has always lent itself well to the video-game format, and thankfully (albeit surprisingly) EA has mostly improved upon their winning formula, while upping the ante visually and adding welcome multiplayer features, easily making the Goblet of Fire their best adaptation yet. There's still much they could be doing with the series, but Harry Potter fans looking for a way to become part of the adventure certainly won't be disappointed.

Harry Potter: Goblet of Fire is, like I have said several times through this review, a capable but average action adventure game that could have been a lot better than the final product. If you are a huge Harry Potter fan, you will still find it neat to play as the trio of characters, but there just isn't enough in this game to warrant this as anything more than a rental.

Tying in with the movie release (the best in the series) this game has come out just in time for the Christmas rush. The corporate powerhouse that is EA has, as usual, acquired the license from Warner Bros to immerse the gamer in the world of wands and wizards. There must have been an enchanted monkey on EA’s back in the form of the hordes of Harry Potter readers, and it shows as the old game system has been dumped and been replaced by a clone of the more successful Lord of the Rings series. While that doesn’t sound like anything special, it is in fact a smart move.

I hope I don't have to explain who Harry Potter is. If I do, I won't. Query it on Google and come back later. Here we are with the fourth Harry Potter videogame, just in time for the Holidays. Talk about milking a cash cow. Just how much money does this lady need? I'm talking about creator J.K. Rowling, who I confuse with Lord of the Rings author JRR Tolkien, and Judas Priest guitarist, K.K. Downing.

Verflixt...

Casual games looking for a magical good time of spells and wonderment won’t find that in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, but hardcore fans of the books and movies will dig on another way to get their Potter fix. The magical spells don’t feel as deep and compelling as portrayed in the books/films, and the overall game experience becomes stale and repeated by the end. Stand out moments from the story are included, so fans will have a hoot picking those events out. For the game’s sake, a clearer presentation of the story would have helped bring in those gamers not familiar with the Potter universe, but for those new to the territory, stick to a rental after catching the film.

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire is not the title that will earn the game series the growing acclaim enjoyed by the last two film adaptations. A satisfying approach to the visual aspects of world-building hints at the possibility of a more complex adventure, but Goblet never delivers. Wasting the amped-up drama of the Triwizard Tournament on simplistic tasks that are actually less enjoyable than the levels you have to complete to arrive at them, Goblet is a likely disappointment to Potterites young and old.

Overall, I enjoyed Goblet...once I understood how the spells and the controls functioned. It’s worth playing if you want a moderately easy game; I'd recommend it to grade-school kids who like the books. So what are you waiting for? Dragons, magic, puzzles, and horrible controls await!

The inability of this series to learn from its mistakes is baffling. You'll often find yourself fighting enemies you can't see because some decorative element in the foreground entirely blocks your view, and you've zero control over the camera. Worse, Harry's a slow-poke at his meat-and-potatoes spell-casting, and any movement leaves your AI companions in the dust. Since many of the simple puzzles require help, this is a constant nuisance. Goblet of Fire adds some interesting enhancements, like bonus-granting Collector's Cards that can be bought and equipped, but it's just too tightly wound to stale gameplay convention to succeed.

While Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire is by no means as dreadful as many film licenses we could mention, it’s certainly not particularly brilliant. As our eight-year-old guest reviewer attests, it does hold a certain appeal for kids, but it’s not worth considering if your voice has already broken. EA really must try harder if they’re to pass their end of term exams…

When I first heard I was reviewing the new Harry Potter game, I was ecstatic--almost as excited as my dad, editor-in-chief Jeff Green, is when he gets a manicure. [You're grounded--Ed.] But then I wondered.how the heck do you make a good game out of a 734-page book? Answer: chop everything out except the main points and make minigames out of everything. These range from exploring Hogwarts to surviving a dragon chase to fighting the sinister Voldemort. Harry Potter addicts should be happy--but since Goblet cuts out so much, I wouldn't recommend it for first-time Potter players.

The console versions fare better when it comes to the controls, although they’re an awfully long way from perfect. What is worth noting, for positive reasons, is the co-operative multiplayer mode. Like Lego Star Wars, other players can drop in and out at any point in the levels (although you still can’t actually save the bloody game at any point other than between levels), and working together to solve the simplistic puzzles and gang up on the attacking creatures with group casts can make the experience more enjoyable.

Let’s get this straight right from the start – we’ve got no problem with adults who read the Harry Potter books. After all, we all need a break from more demanding works from time to time. But adults who read the Harry Potter books who think that they’re somehow involved in any kind of literary movement, as opposed to just reading a series of undemanding kids’ books, really are too full of themselves to be taken seriously. Read The Hobbit, Lord of the Flies or Treasure Island, and you’ll find out what proper fantasy literature is like.

Once more to Hogwarts. The fall has become Harry Potter's season, thanks to Warner Brothers and their film franchise. (Yes, last year the movie came early, but don't expect it to happen again.) And with the film comes EA's inevitable series of tie-in games, which faithfully replicates action and dialogue. This time, however, the adventuring spirit has been left behind, leaving the game a little pallid compared to its film and novel brethren.

Prepare to be astounded. This reviewer is one of the fabled 'UK Dozen' - the remaining twelve British citizens that still haven't read a Harry Potter book. This either makes me a fantastic choice for this review or an atrocious one (make your views known through the usual channels). On the positive side I'll be able to give you an assessment completely free from Potter-love or Potter-loathing. On the negative side, diehard Potterites will have to put up with me using ignorant terminology like 'Potterites' now and again. Swings and roundabouts...

I don't find it particularly embarrassing to tell you that I'm about as into Harry Potter as a grown man could be. Actually, that's not exactly true – I still have some semblance of wanting to keep my friends and loved ones, and that tempers my love for the franchise somewhat. Nevertheless, I have enjoyed nearly everything Harry Potter-related I have experienced, and that includes several of the previous video games. This was not the case with the PSP version of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. This is a game with a built-by-committee feel and a somewhat lazy port feel – the result is a rather clunky, unexciting game powered by a remarkable property. While the Harry Potter look and feel of the game will make it playable for fans, there are far better choices for the player who doesn't dream about days in wizard school.

Harry Potter the Goblet of Fire needs to be better than the former Harry Potter games, or it needs to be the last one made. Gameplay is simple and could easily lose the attention of players. While the three player cooperative mode is a good enhancement here, it doesn’t quite make up for what the overall game is lacking.

Seasoned gamers will find very little of interest here, regardless of how massive a Harry Potter fan you are (personally I love the books and the films). It's a real shame. Wouldn't it have been great to have free run of the entire of Hogwarts, the grounds, Hogsmeade and the Forbidden Forest, attending classes, exploring the school and choosing whether to take part in side quests or go to the next location that would progress the story and lead to a new main mission, GTA style. The potential to create a proper, fully realised interactive version of J.K. Rowling's books is definitely there, and I hope that EA's inevitable release of The Order Of The Phoenix is a deeper and more open-ended affair that caters for adults as well, rather than just placating the kids.

I am writing today a critique of the new Electronic Arts game adaptation of the Warner Brothers film Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, itself an adaptation of the fourth book in the much-loved series by authoress extraordinaire, J.K. Rowling. Before going much further, I would like to clarify to you, the reader, that I am more than somewhat familiar with this series. I have read each book twice and seen each of the movies several times as well. I don't line up for hours or days every time a new book comes out or dress up in the colors of my favorite Hogwarts house, but I'm no slouch when it comes to the lore of Harry Potter. That said, let us examine my thoughts while playing this game.

After all that criticism, there is something positive to be said. Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire is remarkably easy to play. It's easy to learn, and it's easy to figure out what to do to win the game. That makes it appealing for a toddler who enjoys Harry Potter mostly for the made-up words. Still, any sitting of the game lasting longer than 30 minutes can be a mind-numbing experience, no matter how old you are.
