These minor quibbles aside, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone is certainly the most all-out fun game to come down the pike in quite a while. I can only hope that the game's success will encourage EA to rethink its cancellation of the online game. I mean, right now I just run around my yard, dressed in my hand-stitched (but utterly authentic!) Ravenclaw Quidditch robes, chasing a tennis ball. I look like a total goob.

Until then, I have trouble recommending this Potter to anyone. I find the (accidental?) high difficulty level in some parts of Harry Potter refreshing, but the game clearly isn't directed at 20-somethings. And, other than a couple isolated bits HP and the SS is a mess. And I didn't play crap like this when I was a kid, at least not for long. I played Sonic. So there ya have it: Harry Potter is better than a Vomit flavored bean, but a little worse than Grass, and on a level with Booger. Hmm, some kids like boogers..

Everyone's here waiting to greet you: Hagrid, Hermione, Dumbledore and, unfortunately, even Draco and his sidekicks Crabbe and Goyle. So grab your Cloak of Invisibility and let yourself be swept away by a game that is as magical to play as was the book to read.

It's Harry Potter. It's true to the books, true to the films, and challenging enough to keep youngsters (and their Muggle parents) occupied for hours. Plus, Harry faints instead of dying. That's a potent combination that's easy to recommend.

Overall a very solid, fun game that does justice to the license, which is an accomplishment in and of itself. It’s a great way for those that want a more proactive way to experience the story and movie.

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone won't please hardcore game fans, the cynical, or anyone wanting a real challenge. Instead has EA crafted a simple, playable, and satisfying game that's faithful to its subject matter and not just a quick cash-in, which is exactly what fan-obsessed kids (and their parents) will want after seeing the film for the 20th time.

What I liked best about the game was the ease of play. You didn’t have to fumble through spells to see what works. If a spell could be cast, the appropriate spell would be used automatically. The challenges increased with difficulty as the game progressed which gave it that I gotta try one more time feel. However with no multi-player, and virtually no replay ability after you have solved it, hardcore gamers may stay away from it. But, if you are one of the millions of people who are devoted Harry Potter fans whether it be the movie, or the books. By all means you absolutely have to check this out!

Fans of Harry Potter will enjoy this game, especially younger players, but gamers wanting a challenging platformer won't find it here. If the video game world of Harry Potter hasn't been experienced yet, gamers are better off getting Chamber of Secrets, which is the better game. Also, gamers wanting an easy platform foray into fantasy may want to check out The Hobbit, which is similar in concept to these two games and offers a good bit of fun.

Wait - didn't this game come out already? Yes, but that apparently hasn't stopped EA from releasing a new version of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone for the PlayStation 2. Why? Um because it's the holidays and there's money to be made.

WindowsQuandary
It is probably clear from the above that this is not really an adventure game. Though it has plenty of exciting places to explore, it has the feel of an action arcade or platform game. Those sequences though are clearly designed not to bog you down in complex manoeuvres, but rather bring a bit of 12 year old rambuctiousness to proceedings. As such, like all things Potter it is first and foremost for children, and is best shared and enjoyed with them.

WindowsG4 TV: The Electric Playground
The video game falls short of the quality Potter fans expect, and provides nothing more than a simple platform/adventure game that young fans will adore, but older fans will feel disappointed with.

Keeping in mind that the game stays fairly true to the book, but does take some liberties to keep the pace going, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone is a spell worth learning.

It seems that kids still love the Harry Potter franchise (although I think it is starting to lose its steam). So you know that the parents are going to go out and fork out the bucks for their kids. But if you are a gamer in your twenties, like myself then you might want to look elsewhere for your gaming goodness. The game is somewhat dragged out at times and becomes kind of boring. Normally when you buy a game and play the hell out of it, you are playing to achieve a goal and to get something that will make everything worth your while. I did not see that in this game.

From the looks of it, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone makes use of the Unreal engine, and it looks quite sharp because of it. The character models are quite well-detailed, with a mix of 'big-headed anime' and standard design. The environments are also quite well-done, even if they tend to be rather repetitive; the inside of Hogwarts is quite self-similar, as are many of the areas that you go to outside of the school. It looks nice enough, though.

As someone who's read all of the Potter books and watched all of the movies, I have to admit that I'm not nearly as impressed with EA's adaptation of The Sorcerer's Stone as I was with the job it did with Chamber of Secrets. This Warthog-developed prequel in many ways feels like the digital equivalent of a Ron Weasley hand-me-down. The story is the most dated, the art assets re-used, and gameplay mechanics re-used, and all with a serious hit in graphic quality, a truth that really disappoints. Worst of all, the game's general lack of polish also means that it's buggy and sometimes employs questionable character artificial intelligence.

PlayStation 2Worth Playing
The Harry Potter franchise is huge. It's busting at the seams with profitability and everything the young wizard touches seems to turn into gold for everyone involved with the production. The videogame aspect of the equation is no exception. It's apparent from the number of units sold and the surprisingly good reviews it received that last year's multiconsole Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets was a smash hit. After the success of Chamber of Secrets, it would seem only logical to have a quickly-made/high-profit-potential, financially low-risk prequel produced. Unfortunately, Sorcerer's Stone does not meet the standard of Harry Potter games that was set in Chamber of Secrets.

Rarely has there been a better book-to-movie-to-videogame franchise than Harry Potter. The magic and mystery coated series, created by now-gazillionaire J.K. Rowling, sold in the millions on paper, delighted millions on the silver screen and, thanks to Electronic Arts, achieved mainstream success on the digital front, too.

WindowsIGN
I think that die-hard Potter fans will be able to forgive the shortcomings in search of a fun adventure, which is definitely in place, if a little hidden. But given all of the drawbacks I can't recommend The Sorcerer's Stone as I did Chamber of Secrets, and I think anybody new to the Potter universe would be far better served with Eurocom's superior title.

Not waiting for another publisher to beat 'em to the punch, Electronic Arts quickly swooped in and obtained the license necessary to make Harry Potter video games. Several Potter games have been released on all of the platforms, from PSone and Game Boy Advance to the PC and PlayStation 2. I never got the chance to try out the previous adventures, so I was glad to get my hands on the latest chapter in the series.

Overall, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone is a weak follow-up to Chamber of Secrets that seems like an awkward fit for anyone who already owns last year's game. While fans may enjoy the chance to relive Harry's first adventure in a proper action adventure game, the gameplay and graphical performance of Sorcerer's Stone doesn't differ much from Chamber of Secrets, and the game itself doesn't offer any dramatic improvements to make it a must-have. In the end Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone is an unremarkable game that diehard fans may enjoy, but it's one that casual gamers and Potter fans may want to think twice about picking up.

This game does give a nod in the most stripped-down, basic way to the plot of its namesake bestselling novel. Its first attempt involves encapsulating the first 112 pages of said novel in a two-minute parade of ivory and black ink flashcard-like pages as the game begins. These are supposed to bring the player up to speed on Harry's whole history and background.

When the movie Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone first arrives in theatres, I have decided to pass on it. It seems then that I must be among the handful of people left in this universe who have never read Harry Potter. When I see the movie on video later on, I immediately start reading the books and devour them in a matter of days. The single thought that keeps going through my head is what a great game this can make. The thought of exploring Hogwarts and playing a game of Quidditch seems like a dream game. With the huge fan base of Harry Potter, it is just a matter of time before such a game hits the shelves—and what a game it is, if you are able to overlook some minor issues along the way.

While the adventure is quite entertaining, it is most definitely made for children. It simply won't fully stimulate most teen or adult gamers. Conversely, a 7 year old would probably play with a Harry Potter cheese log if it were advertised correctly. In short, this is not a horrible game, nor is it incredible. With such a rich palette of imagination to work with, the game developers took an easy way out rather than creating something revolutionary. Still, if you want a nice relaxing game to jump into, or your kids need something to do, hop onto Platform 9 3/4.

Harry Potter is not an awful rip-off as a blatant attempt to slap a licensing name on something to make a quick buck. Fans of Harry Potter will certainly enjoy the game. It's not the greatest experience with enough frustrations with gameplay, saving, and bugs to keep this title from rising to the top of the fray as an excellent over all game. But enough of me, let's tally up the points: Let's see... 40 to start minus... add 15... carry the one... mumble mumble... leaving us with a grand total of 55 points for Gryffindor. Not enough to win the house cup, I'm afraid. Rather, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone is lodged firmly into the middle ground between excellent and awful, leaving us with a solidly okay title.
55
WindowsGameSpot
Ultimately, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone doesn't have the widespread appeal of its literary namesake and is suitable only for children. When compared with the many stellar gameplay experiences available to PC gamers today, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone underwhelms with an extremely brief story, overly simplistic platform jumping sequences, and repetitive gameplay. Then again, children ready to move on from purely educational PC games to those that are purely entertaining will likely enjoy Harry's first PC adventure, but older players captivated by Rowling's first tale would be better served by reading the novel's three sequels or by seeing the movie again.

Rehashing Potter’s first year of Hogwart’s is starting to wear me out. The book, the movie, the first time that this game came out…. Purportedly, the team set out to upgrade the graphics and the gameplay of Sorcerer’s Stone on PSone. What they put out was a slightly less painful version of the earlier, incredibly painful version.

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone's saving grace is the characters. Yes, a lot of the gameplay is boring and clunky, but through books and movies we've come to think of Harry and crew as friends, so the true fan will be able to look past a lot of the game's quirks and have a relatively decent experience. If you're new to the whole Potter phenomenon, you may want to use the books, films, or last year's Chamber of Secrets as your point of introduction.

GameCubeGameSpy
Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone separates itself from the typical "bad game based on a good movie" crowd because of the game's characters. Through books and movies, we've really got to know Harry, Hermione, etc., so we genuinely do care what happens to them. Despite all its problems, the true fan will want to play through the thing just to be able to live a little more of the Potter experience. The casual fan or typical gamer, though, has better places to invest their spell-casting time.

So what's the Harry Potter fan to do while waiting for the next 900-page Potter book or six-hour Potter flick? The wizard-loving gamer could sit back and fire-up EA's new Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. It's an overhauled take on the PSOne and PC title from 2001, and reintroduces us to Harry and the rest of the Hogwarts crew as they plow through their first year of wizardry school. The Potter-phile may overlook a lot of the game's troubles, but most gamers will want to do their spell-casting elsewhere.

Finally, I do love the fact that you can run around shooting flipendo spells. Running through the castle and grounds and flinging blue fireballs just because I damn well please is a refreshing bit of liberty. It’s just too bad you cant actually hit anything you aren’t supposed to. Perhaps when Harry grows up the games will too.
