flawed, weird, not scary...but should the word 'bad' be associated with this game? DOS Arejarn (833)
Very good, but it has some critical flaws. DOS Goteki45 (308)
Despite being a bit cheesy, Harvester is a good, solid, warped adventure game.

(How over-the-top is Harvester? At the start of this three-disc diversion, I unintentionally took a swing at a freckle-faced delivery boy, who promptly shot me dead in a bloody spray of bullets.) Like a late-late movie on some obscure UHF station, this gratuitously violent game doesn't make much sense, but it is a lot of twisted fun.

If you've been brought up on a staple diet of crap interactive movies that don't require you to do anything, ever, then you won't get very far in this game. On the other hand, if you remember classics like Countdown that offer a bit of a challenge and you're after more of the same, you can't go wrong with Harvester.

Harvester is the second adventure game, after Phantasmagoria released last year, that intentionally immerses players into a world of terror and extreme violence. Packed with the most gruesome scenes ever featured in the interactive entertainment industry, Harvester is definitely not the average adventure game. The story written by veteran game writer G. P. Austin (Privateer, Strike Commander) has a bizarre and disturbing plot, that is certain to not leave you indifferent.

There's nothing actually revolutionary going on in Harvester, but it's a creepy game featuring tried-and-true adventure mechanics with entertaining twists and some truly disturbing full-motion video segments that will follow you to bed and snuggle up nice and cozy in your dreams. To enhance the warped game experience, you could wait until all your friends go away and then play Harvester in the dark, alone, with your back to an open screen door banging in the wind...but it doesn't sound like a really good idea.

In a twisted way, you have to admire the people who put this together, because they did risk the scorn of the industry. This is exactly the sort of game to get Congressmen all hot and bothered, something an emerging industry making an attempt at self-regulation does not need. In the end, though, the greatest condemnation of the game is not that it's violent or sickening. Like Night Trap, it's a bad game because - it's a bad game. The puzzles are mediocre, the animation crude and the arcade fighting segments a terrible idea (they dominate the last third of the game). The designers may have thought they were making some sort of social statement, but the intended point is lost in all the sound and fury of oozing eyeballs and babies being hacked apart. It'll play well with the teens, because they'll think it's edgy and funny (missing the parody and irony, assuming they're actually there), but adults will no doubt find it stupid.

Harvester arrives with a slightly sinister pedigree and a lot of hype. You may have heard about, or seen ads relating to, its "controversial" nature. In actuality, that is just so much taradiddle. While the game is hardly worth bothering about, the attendant publicity makes some coverage necessary, so here it is.

Harvester isn't a bad game just because it is violent and bloody. It isn't a bad game on the basis that most of the residents are thoroughly awful. It isn't a bad game solely because the puzzles are largely mediocre. It isn't even a bad game as a result of the last third being simply a mouse clicking kill fest. It is a bad game for all these reasons.
