Activision takes giant steps beyond the original, and offers a mech combat game to rival MechWarrior 3 any day of the week.

Mild complaints aside, Heavy Gear 2 is a fantastic game. The engaging story, taut action, meaty sound, epic music, great voice acting, squad mates who actually kick ass, excellent AI, and eye-watering graphics make it the best of the three 'Mech' contenders. Multiplayer even gets a good rub down in Heavy Gear 2, because it's functional and exciting right out of the box. If you have a fast enough computer to handle the heavy load (Pentium 300 recommended by me, 3D accelerator required by them), you'll find that Heavy Gear 2 is just about as good as it gets for the genre.

This game is more than a worthy successor to the first Heavy Gear game. With all the competition out there right now in the form of Mechwarrior and Starsiege, it's interesting to find that this game keeps right up to them in terms of quality and sophistication. Bottom Line: Excellent graphics engine and solid storyline. Many more tactical squad-based missions than the first game in the series. Controls are very complex and will take some time to get used to them. Threat factor based limitations are a little cumbersome, but are fairly flexible.

Overall, Heavy Gear II is the most impressive game yet in the giant robot genre. You'll definitely have to break from tradition - there's almost as much Tribes and Terra Nova here as there is MechWarrior (not to mention a pinch of Quake). Still, it's an adaptation well worth making, and Activision's designers deserve praise for realizing that exciting missions and challenging AI are as important as flashy graphics and feature checklists.

Activision, I could kiss you guys for this one. Finally, a mech based game that gives you the choice between simulation control and arcade control. Simulation gives the die hard mech fans the throttle and torso-twisting mayhem that they sooo swoon over. The arcade, which of course is my favorite, allows you to go to war in your Gear and use mouse look and arrow keys similar to a first person shooter.

Heavy Gear 2 is one of Activision’s finest games. It never let me down in any departments and often surprised me with new, exciting ways of play as well as introducing me to the action and fun-filled enjoyment of this great combat simulation. If you are the type of person who enjoys devastatingly powerful machines and first person action, then this is a game you will enjoy. Activision should feel proud that they have released an awesome sequel, which is not often achieved by other computer game manufacturers.

We had a lot of fun with Starsiege a few months ago and MechWarrior 3 is still getting a lot of play around the office, but how does the latest, Heavy Gear II, stack up against the competition? Well, not too bad. It's kind of like the porrage that Goldilocks ate, not too hot, but not too cold either. It doesn't quite live up to MechWarrior 3's prowess, but it's certainly fun and it adds some new features to the giant robot genre.

Heavy Gear 2 is definitely a game for people who are looking to spend some time, get involved with the style and commands, and use their brains, so pure action junkies need not apply. For everyone else, though, there should be enough action, adventure, strategy, and simulation, mixed together in a nice package, to satisfy you. Check this game out!

Judging from the reactions of gamers since its release, one thing is clear about Heavy Gear II. It is the Uma Thurman of giant robot games. Either you love it immoderately, or it leaves you lukewarm. I’ve got to admit I fall into the second category—while aware of and even standing in admiration of its considerable charms, Heavy Gear II, like Uma, is just not my type. I realize this is not likely to cause a great deal of dismay to either Ms. Thurman or the folks at Activision, but I’m afraid that’s the way it’s going to be for at least some other gamers, and is therefore something you should be aware of before you plunk down 50 bucks for the game. With that in mind, I’ve concocted a short quiz to determine whether or not you should purchase Heavy Gear II.

Zugegeben,
wenn die Missionen funktionieren,
machen sie mächtig viel Spaß. Man weiß
vorher nie, was am nächsten Wegpunkt
lauert. Dennoch sollten Sie mit dem Kauf
bis zum angekündigten Patch warten.

On the whole, Heavy Gear II is very entertaining, with great graphics and a lot of interesting missions, but the game is also marred by graphic errors and annoying AI and control problems. Regardless, Heavy Gear II proves that there's room in town for more then one war-torn, giant robot game on the shelves, and is sure to appeal to those who liked the promise of Mechwarrior 3, but wished for something with faster action and more subtle, stealthy gameplay.
