Apart from the enormous amount of tape loading involved, heavy metal is non-stop fun. You've getting four games for the price of - well, not one but two - and they're all substantially better than ninety percent of the stuff on the market right now. Heavee!

Despite some rough edges in the audio-visual department and some annoying delays while playing the game, Heavy Metal isn't a bad combat simulation. The three sections are tough to master and present a fair challenge when combined in the strategic element of the game, especially when you're outnumbered almost two to one! The feel is more 'arcade' like than straight wargaming, making the game easier to get into than some of the more complex simulations available - a fact that may repel strategists but will be welcomed by blast fans. But both these groups may find Heavy Metal a bit of light relief from their usual games.

Not a bad game this one with three playable segments, but in some respects it's very much a mixture of extremes. At one end of the spectrum you've got the very simple, graphically wobbly FAV bit - a simple left-right shoot-em-up - whilst, at the other, you've got the reasonably complex and satisfying MBT tank sim with all the component parts thrown into a strategy game. Quite polished but it ain't exactly a whole lotta rosie. Aaargh!

The strategy here is fairly simple, which leaves us with the three arcade games. FAV is simply left/right fire and soon becomes monotonous, as does the ADAT air defence game. The tank game is the most complex, but it's pretty dull anyway with crude graphics. Once all the controls are mastered it's fun for a while, but the repetitiveness soon becomes irritating. Overall it is disappointing and dated mix of sub-games.

Heavy Metal is an old-fashioned game that will only appeal to trigger-happy fiends.

AmigaAmiga Action
A strange selection of tank games, Heavy Metal fails to impress on virtually all counts. Although the three sub-games offer good variety, they are all poor in their execution and have minimal playability. The game is graphically nice, but the good points end there. Both sections are quite playable, but MBT section is poor. The game also suffers from 8-bitesque graphics, which include Fast Attack Vehicles that float out of nowhere, and a tedious Battlezone-style game that desperately wants to be a tank sim. A terrible mish-mash of terrible games that is best avoided.
