Heretic II

Overall, this game shines above so many others. Realistic scenery and buildings, Sounds from the Music God himself. The Multi play is something you have to experience for yourself. It is unique as well as fun, as I said before Heretic2 is a major player. Leaping tall buildings in a single bound, faster than a speeding bullet, that's what Raven Software has achieved here.

In porting Heretic II to the Amiga, Hyperion Software have woven a kind of magic that Corvus himself would be proud of. This game will capture you in its spell as soon as you start playing. You will be gagging for more advanced 3D hardware to plug into your Amiga within minutes. I only wish there were more hours in a day...

You have got to buy this game!!! I cannot emphasize this enough. If you like 3D shooters, third person shooters, or just plain love to see the power and glory of computer games today, then you must buy Heretic II. If for nothing else, you should just buy this game for its unbelievable artwork that will capture your imagination and bring back that kid in you that used to wish that they made games like this. Heretic II is one of those games that nearly achieves perfection!

Heretic II is such a good work that you want more than you get-more characters than Corvus in solo play, more RPG features such as skill and magic attainment, and more levels. The Loading Game screen has a wonderful map of Parthoris that keeps track of your progress, but it suggests many more places than you actually get to visit-building expectations and leaving you feeling cheated after reaching the final boss. But overall, Heretic II's third-person interpretation of the action genre takes the category in a fresh, fun new direction.

Heretic 2 is a great step forward in the use of the Quake 2 engine with the gamer (you and me) being given a third-person view of the action. We actually look at Corvus, Sidhe warrior from Heretic, as he moves through his village and beyond on a quest to save his people and his world. Heretic 2 goes beyond the usual shoot 'em ups in that rather than just slashing and burning your way through a game you are required to use your brains. And believe me they come in handy. This is an excellent game that satisfies those who enjoy the combat element and those who enjoy the mystery-solving aspect. Me, I loved them both.

The problems with Heretic II are minor in comparison with other, comparable games. The overall experience is really wonderful. You not only get an action-packed shooter, but you get one with a great story, interesting adversaries, excellent level design, and amazing graphical effects. Bottom Line: Excellent graphics and sounds. Level design is wonderful, featuring new architectural designs that differ from city to city. The third person perspective allows for some acrobatic maneuvers, and never gets in the way of the action. Weapons and powerups are both nostalgic and interesting.

After being completely let down by Hexen 2 I wasn't expecting that much out of Heretic 2. Thank god I was wrong because Heretic 2 is one of the most amazing games that I have ever played. Every aspect of the game has been attended to and nothing has been left out. Another good feature I noticed was the lack of bugs, which such releases like Sin have been plagued with. It's good to see that Raven actually took the time to put out a fairly bug free product. I recommend Heretic 2 to anyone who enjoys Quake or even Tombraider, you will not regret picking this title up.

Wow, what can I say? Heretic II was one of the most amazing games I've seen in a while. The 3rd person perspective (done right) provided a fresh, unique style of gameplay that has been rarely seen before. The beautifully rendered levels, attention to detail, and fluid animation/gameplay really sets this game apart from the rest. If nothing else, Heretic II has raised the bar for third-person POV games to come -- Drakan and Max Payne have some huge shoes to fill.

Although Heretic 2 does not contain the sheer scope and depth of the reigning king from Valve, it is a unique product that reforms the genre in a different aspect and opens fresh design possibilities. 3D Realms and others are creating their own fast-paced third-person action games and it is good to see the promise held in the approach. Add to the list of goodies a complete designer toolkit for user creations and full support for co-op games and this is an absolute winner. Raven has shattered the first-person mold for 3D action games and there is no looking back.

Alle, die die notwendige Hardware besitzen, sollten sich das zugegebenermaßen etwas teure Game zulegen, es lohnt sich wirklich. "Heretic II" macht außerdem klar, dass ein modern aufgerüsteter Amiga noch nicht zum alten Eisen zählt.

Eingefleischte Fans der bisherigen Raven-Ausflüge nach Parthoris wird Heretic 2 sicher verschrecken. Habe ich mich bisher durch eher düstere Levels gekämpft, fegt Corvus diesmal wie ein Wirbelwind durch ein vergleichsweise buntes, grafisch opulentes und leicht zugängliches Actionfest. An Stelle der komplexen Levelanordnung jage ich auf schnurgeradem Weg durch eine spannend inszenierte Handlung. Nur stellenweise greifen die Designer zu tief in den Farbtopf, und angebliche Fantasy-Insekten erinnern eher an Außerirdische. Die Schulter-Perspektive ist technisch gut gelöst. Anders als in Tomb Raider habe ich den Gegner sogar in engen Gängen immer fest im Blick.

Tot mijn grote spijt moet ik twee negatieve punten aanhalen. Een eerste is dat van de redelijk lange wachttijden bij het inladen van een nieuw level, doch hier kan ik nog mee leven. Het tweede is echter veel erger. Het spel is te kort! Veel te kort! Ik denk dat er slechts vijf levelbossen voorkomen en dat is met van het goede te veel, of nee, te weinig. Dit kost het spel een vol punt aan gameplay. Van een gemiste kans gesproken.

Heretic II more than lives up to its predecessors -- this game is in a completely different class. Although it continues the Heretic and Hexen story and holds over many weapons and items from the earlier games, the third-person interface gives it a completely different (and, in my opinion, better) feel. The game isn't as long as I would have liked and the new interface does have some quirks that can make navigating some areas frustrating, but overall it's a lot of fun and worth adding to your collection.

Heretic II is a fine game; no doubt about it. The levels are extremely well designed, the graphics are nice, there's good variety, it's challenging, the weapons are imaginative and it's great fun all the way through. The control system may be a bit on the fiddly side and a little annoying at times, but you get used to it. And at a budget price, it's a good value too. So what can I find that's wrong with it? Not a lot with the game itself, aside from one major problem: it's a bit buggy.

Die Strategie, eine vorgefertigte Grafik-Engine zu verwenden und dafür dem eigentlichen Spieldesign mehr Zeit zu widmen, geht wieder einmal auf. Die wunderschöne, abwechslungsreiche und originelle Grafik trägt eine wenig spektakuläre jedoch angenehm an die Drachenlanze-Saga erinnernde Fantasy-Geschichte. Mein Held läßt sich recht unkompliziert, wenn auch nicht immer sehr präzise, manövrieren. Die unsaubere Steuerung wirkt sich insofern nicht negativ auf das Geschehen aus, da hakelige Stellen eine absolute Rarität bleiben. Insgesamt sind es die Details, welche Heretic 2 besonderen Charme verleihen: die verwinkelten, vielartigen Level, das in Thorax und Unterkörper aufgeteilte Charaktermodell oder aber das stetige Aufrüsten der sehenswerten (und vor allem an der Spielfigur sichtbaren) Waffen.

Half-Life realmente cometeu um crime. Está tão sufocado com originalidade e drama que, em comparação, Heretic II parece sem brilho. Não é culpa da Raven, mas seu jogo foi superado por eventos que estavam fora de seu controle; e agora que a obra prima da Valve domina o gênero, Heretic II está condenado a permanecer para sempre em suas sombras húmidas de sangue e adrenalina.

Goed, Heretic II is dan wel geen Unreal of Half Life, desondanks kan ik het spel de shooter-fans aanraden. De game biedt namelijk genoeg spanning, mysterieuze omgevingen en kannonenvlees. En bij Unreal kun je geen special moves maken.

You wouldn't want to live there, but the world of Heretic II is a beautiful place to visit.

Ultimately, it's not merely an action game, but Raven's picaresque and picturesque tour of a lithe elf's journey and his spectacular bag of tricks. If the overall game isn't particularly exceptional, especially in this season of superb innovative games like Half-Life and Thief, it makes for good solid entertainment using all the resources of the latest technology.

Overall Heretic II is fun and certainly looks good, but it's not as good as I had hoped. Of course, being a big fan of the original, maybe my expectations were a little high. While it has some of the best lighting effects I've seen in an action game, good level design, and utilizes a third-person view better than any game to date, the AI could use some improvement and I'm sure many gamers really would have liked the addition of a first-person view. Now I'm going to go play a few levels of the original...just for a kick.
