Description
In
Hinterland, the king of a fantasy kingdom sends the player out on a mission to tame a wild territory of his realm. The game mixes the gameplay of a city builder and an action RPG. The map contains several areas, each with its own resource and occupied by a group of enemies. The objective of the game is to conquer all of these areas. For each area, the player will get a reward depending on what resources the area contains.
Players start out by creating their own character. There are several different classes to choose from and each has their own strengths and weaknesses. Starting out with only a manor, players have to make their village grow by recruiting visitors. These visitors have different professions such as farmers, guards and merchants. Each visitor has its own requirements that the town has to live up to. For example, a visitor can require that the player has reached a certain level of fame, or that the town has a certain building, such an inn. The players fame increases for every area that is conquered or fulfilling a request from the king.
At any time, the player can choose to leave the town and go out in the wilderness for some adventure, either alone or in company with recruited villagers. In the wilderness the players run into plenty of enemies of different sorts. The battles occur in a for the genre typical hack 'n slash way, where the player simply clicks on the enemy he wants to attack. The player character (and his followers) will by defeating monsters get experience points an eventually level up. When reaching a new level, the player character can increase one skill and choose a special trait. After defeating an enemy the player will receive loot such as new weapons, armour and money plus equipment that can increase productivity in the town. The player cannot die in combat. If he is defeated he will get back to the town centre for recovery. He will however lose fame.
At different occasions in the game the player will get requests from the king that has has to be accomplished with in a certain time period. This includes giving money, or getting hold of a specific resource. If unsuccessful, the player loses fame. To lose the game, the player has to either run out of food, have his town destroyed by raiders, or has his fame run so low that nobody wants to follow him.
