Purists of the Tolkien novel might not see the entertainment value of this game. Phooey! This game is a delight to play and any adventure into the realm of Middle-earth, if done well, is worth the time spent doing it. The Hobbit provides familiar landmarks, stays true to elements of the story and allows players to work through the levels in a way that provides fun and challenge.

The Hobbit is a perfect example of a storybook coming to life right before your eyes. I was captivated from the opening movie to the climatic finish. The story does justice to the original book it was based on and any liberties that were taken are small and only for the sake of better gameplay. There is a perfect mix of action, adventure, and platform gameplay that makes The Hobbit one of those rare hybrid games that will appeal to several types of gamers of all age groups. You might want to hold off on a purchase until the price drops, but anyone who loves the works of Tolkien or just looking for a family-friendly game will definitely want to play The Hobbit.

All of this variety in gameplay and the fortitude of each style ensure that The Hobbit never becomes boring over the course of its rather lengthy adventure. Like the book it is based upon, the game struggles to establish itself as being truly epic, but there is no doubt that it is satisfying and fun to play. Whether you’re a long-time fan or just someone curious about the roots of The Lord of the Rings, this game is a faithful and entirely enjoyable way to experience the travels of that other famous hobbit.

The Hobbit me héél erg aangenaam verraste.

This game is a typical platform game, with nothing innovative or new, but one that is designed competently and with skill. The exploration, combat, puzzles, quests and item collecting are standard fare in most games of this type, but there's nothing wrong with doing things done before, as long as they're fun, which in this case, they are.

This game aspires to be the next Zelda in playability and scope and on some levels it succeeds. The presentation, from the slick cut-scenes to the stylized look, excellent voice acting and impressive music score, hits well beyond the mark. The Hobbit successfully merges storyline and game and it both follows the book's premise and occasionally takes some liberties. Meanwhile, the play mechanics, while all-too-traditional if not formulaic, get the job done and there are enough battles, puzzles and fetch quests to keep it all moving along.

The Hobbit is a well-made adventure game that will absolutely provide a good amount of entertainment and satisfaction for those seeking it. But at the same time the title falls a little short thanks to a general lack of polish and overall difficulty.

Before Frodo there was Bilbo, another short, hairy-toed homebody whose interests stretched no farther than the limits of the Shire. Bilbo's story, told in J.R.R. Tolkien's The Hobbit, was the base for the Lord of the Rings novels to follow. And with the great success of the Peter Jackson-directed movies and the acclaimed Electronic Arts-published digital spin-offs, it was inevitable that a title about the first Baggins would eventually make its debut. This is that game.

For those of you who are into platformers a-la Rayman, The Hobbit should be fun enough. Younger gamers are sure to be drawn into the story and the fluent gameplay, which rarely offers any particular brainstorming. Also, it's a fair assumption that Tolkien fans and average gamers might find something in it as well. Nonetheless, there's still a majority of players, who are used to experiencing more gore and violence. If this is your attitude, then it's safe to say that the game's child-like approach won't come as a remarkably rewarding endeavor.

The problem with The Hobbit isn’t that it’s a bad game; the problem is that while this title is based on one of the greatest franchises ever, it continuously sidetracks you with diversions that aren’t in the book, when all you really want to do is get to the good stuff that Tolkien crafted. That material is in here, but you’ll have to slog through lots of mindless platforming to get to it.

The Hobbit и The Return of the King

With the current glut of Tolkien-inspired games focusing directly on the brutal, tragic stories of The Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit offers up a story that's less dire and more of an enjoyable romp. The story still stands up, but the game that has been wrapped around it simply cannot keep up its end of the bargain. The experience it offers just isn't as engaging or inventive as its source material.

In contrast to the grand scope of J. R. R. Tolkien's epic Lord of the Rings trilogy, the story of The Hobbit is the much smaller, more personal affair, chronicling the first big adventure of a reluctant young halfling by the name of Bilbo Baggins. Now, Inevitable Entertainment has woven this tale into the context of a fairly standard action adventure game. Tolkien fans may enjoy the game's presentation of Middle-earth lore, but The Hobbit tends to rely too heavily on derivative, uninspired gameplay for it to stand up on its own.

In the end, my greatest concern with The Hobbit is that the game fails to give enough attention on screen to other Tolkien characters aside from Bilbo. This omission is particularly glaring for any gamer who has read the novel. My advice to interested gamers is to become familiar with the novel, in order to fully enjoy not only this game but also to realize what you are missing. Nonetheless, The Hobbit is a game worth playing if you are only in for a few kicks and not a whole truck load of flare.

If your child can handle the animated film or the book, the game won't shock them too much. There are nasty trolls, goblins, a scary dragon and the giant spiders are pretty creepy. The game is combat oriented but the violence isn't over done and there's no blood. Another problem is that the game is a little too challenging to be a kids game it looks like it is.

Bilbo's adventure borrows quite a bit from The Legend of Zelda, and so the comparisons come fast and easy. Let's be honest: Zelda is the real deal. The Hobbit is comparatively linear and visually ordinary. It does, though, have different goals. In attempting to translate a famed fantasy novel into the open-ended world of gaming, Sierra has produced an adventure that allows for enough puzzling, sidetracking, and combat for both gamers that love the book, and gamers who only love a fun game. The younger crowds and Tolkien fanatics will find a lot to like here, but veteran gamers may feel as if they're in all too familiar territory.

Non-Hobbit Forming Professor Tolkien's debut novel had goblins, elves, wizards, dwarves, and hobbits, but it wasn't the Lord of the Rings. It was a humbler adventure, one aimed at children and neatly setting the stage, providing the foreshadowing for Tolkien's more famous sprawling epic now appearing on DVD (and soon in, again, in theaters).

The Hobbit is a genuine effort to combine the atmosphere currently popularized by the Tolkien novels-come-movies and Zelda gameplay. For the most part it succeeds and provides a nice diversion for Lord of the Rings fans.

Although undoubtedly defensible, The Hobbit is a common-or-garden 3D platform/slasher in the same form as Maximo, wrapped up in a five year-old's bedtime story version of one of the most popular fantasy books ever written. It's ten hours of a fairly easy going platform slashing with well-spaced save points, and young gamers might get something out of it too, but for the majority it just is not good enough. Fans of the book can add a point, as long as they have the stomach for pangs of disappointment, but the rest of you would be better served shopping elsewhere in this already crowded genre.

It's not that The Hobbit's action is executed poorly. At its best, the game's a solid little romp, with tricky puzzles and some truly exciting sequences (the encounter with Smaug in the end, for example, which almost makes the 10 or so hours' worth of gameplay seem worth it). These small sparks of inspiration are too infrequent, however, and they get buried in the seen-it-all-before platform gameplay that occupies most of your play time. The audiovisuals don't do much to carry The Hobbit, either -- the game's cutesy-poo Jim Henson's Hobbit Babies look will turn off much of its potential audience before they even have a chance to become hooked on this platform romp.

Bilbo Baggins, as many of us know, is a typical hobbit. He’s portly, laid-back, and perfectly content with never leaving Hobbiton. However, due to his recruitment by a wise wizard and a bunch of dwarves, Bilbo sets out on a quest where he encounters some awkward camera angles, many boring stages, and a final couple levels that hint at what could have been a much better game. So much for the epic journey I expected.

The Hobbit is a game that doesn't know what audience it's going for. Its look and feel is too juvenile for adults, and some of its challenges are too difficult and frustrating for kids. Even rabid Tolkien fans won't care for the game, thanks to its translation of the classic novel into a lightweight, cartoonish platformer. It has a few redeeming qualities, but it's a sad waste of great source material.

WindowsComputer Gaming World (CGW)
The Hobbit is unlikely to make anyone’s list of favorite games. Adult garners will find it too basic, children may find it too frustrating, and fans of Lord of the Rings will prefer a more authentic Tolkien experience. But if you find yourself at Blockbuster, desperate for a console-game fix, and all the games you really want to play aren’t available, you could do worse than blowing an hour or two with this one.

XboxNetjak
The Hobbit really just doesn’t have much to offer. Aside from a weak combat system and poorly designed jumping puzzles, the game is just a tedious scavenger hunt that usually feels more like work than entertainment. Players that enjoy exploring every nook and cranny of a game may find The Hobbit to their liking, but everyone else is advised to quench their thirst for adventure elsewhere.

GameCubeGamePro (US)
Tolkien’ s work has inspired heaps of amazing art, music, film, animation, and at least one good video game (hint: its not this one). But this revisionist take on The Hobbit is aimed squarely at making a quick buck by riding Peter Jackson’s coattails.

XboxGame Revolution
Oddly, I can’t think of any reason to recommend The Hobbit to anybody. It straddles the line between little kid game and hard platformer in such a way that I don’t think anyone will like it. I guess The Hobbit makes these strange concessions to gameplay to make it a friendlier game, but it’s still frustrating as hell. And the game screws around with important literary details enough to turn off Tolkien fans (like myself). So, I guess if slaughtering scores of poor innocent frogmen sounds fun, The Hobbit might be the game for you, for an hour or two.
33
GameCubeGame Revolution
Finally (because I almost forgot about them) there is the matter of The Hobbit's puzzles. Most of these involve treasure chests with timing-based mini-games instead of locks. Screw up and you might get burned or poisoned (and reeeally frustrated). There are also some wonderful puzzles where you have to find all the gears and bolts needed to repair a gate. I think at one point there are three of these in a row, and they’re identical. Sweeet.

PlayStation 2Game Revolution
If EA’s The Return of the King was a revelation in quality movie-to-video-game translation, then Vivendi's The Hobbit is a brain fart. Playing The Hobbit is like talking to someone and realizing, in the midst of the conversation, that they have been passing gas the whole time you’ve been talking to them. You try to stay focused on the conversation - something about barking spiders from Mars, maybe? - but you simply can't continue. You nod politely, say something about dropping some kids off at the pool, and turn off your console, never to breathe another whiff of The Hobbit again.

At this point it doesn't feel like Tolkien - it is too childlike - obviously aimed at the younger market. Battling with enemies takes little thought - press a few buttons and they die. This applies generally throughout the game - nothing taxing, nothing exciting, nothing notable at all really.
