Trivia
At the time, PC's were considered too slow to move quickly through the rendered levels, but
John Carmack used a workaround called
raycasting. Instead of drawing all graphics at once and consuming all the memory, thin vertical strip lines of graphics were drawn at the time, based on the player's POV. By combining this with the scaling of objects and elements based on the player's current position, as introduced in
Wing Commander, a fast, realistic 3-D world could be built.
