Hoyle Solitaire is a solid commercial version of what is a standard in the shareware game industry. It is separated from its lesser brethren by high quality graphics, sound and the occasional animation. Solitaire is a wonderful thing, however unless you are a Solitaire junkie or guru, you will probably get bored with this game fairly quick. On the other hand, if you do love Solitaire this game may be for you. Although I would not clearly rate this game as the best Solitaire I've ever played, it is certainly in the running for the top. Eric's Solitaire (a sample of which comes with various new Macs) is a definite rival. All in all, this is a nice version of Solitaire, but you must determine if Hoyle Solitare is worth the extra money in order to experience its sound, music and animation.

In addition to regular card table play, you can also play an arcade-style game called Card Flick. It's fairly self-explanatory. With a virtual hand you flick virtual cards into a virtual hat for, yup, virtual points. Any time you win one of the solitaire games you'll also get a chance to “flick.” Although this game doesn't unlock the mysteries of the universe, it does offer hours and hours of gameplay. Take a break from the shoot-‘em-ups and God games - play a little solitaire!

Overall, the Hoyle series manages to break through the humdrum cloud of PC card gaming by offering two well-planned games. If you dig cards, then you should dig this.

It's these classy graphics, the low price and a nice selection of game variants that make Hoyle Solitaire a decent buy. The game's fun, if not all-inclusive and a good stopgap until something more elaborate comes along for Windows 95.

In Marathon and Descent, you expect the menu bar to be hidden: It adds to an immersive experience. But you certainly don't need immersion to play solitaire. Plus, as the other programs prove, you don't need a Quadra to play Solitaire. The interface is also clunky and nonintuitive (I couldn't figure it out without reading the manual).
