According to the game's author, a "humpster" is a "humping monster". The player is some mad scientist in charge of outfitting a monster with various appendages, selecting their location and general configuration -- factors that will influence its later locomotive and offensive capabilities when it is released in the arena.

Informing only its initial layout, the player sits back and plays no active role during the bout, the two opponents gyrating apart and together like two blind epileptics at a breakdancing competition. When they come into jiggling contact like a Tickle-Me-Elmo pile, damage is incurred, each touch decreasing a health bar depending on whose flailing limbs land the most solid blow.

Either slain or discombobulated through a lack of hump stamina, the loser surrenders its own extremities to the victor, providing the clockmaker player more options toward arming their Mr. Potato Head champion and sending them back into the fray to see what they can do with the new parts.
