Narrative elements that go deeper than any previous adventure game. Extremely grim subject matter means the game isn't exactly fun. An intriguing adult game that definitely won't be everyone's cup of entertainment.

The Good Old Days
The puzzles aren't what make this game, though. It's the morbid atmosphere of the story which is perfectly supported by the graphics and the excellent speech. Definitely a classic...

Just Adventure
While the game does not rely on gore or glamour to entertain, it still is a great play. I recommend anyone who gets nostalgic for the days of old grab a copy if they can find one, get a bowl of popcorn, and get ready for the old fashioned thrill.

In terms of sheer gameplay mechanics, I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream resembles your typical point-and-click adventure fare. However, what sets this game apart from its brethren is perhaps one of the most dark and disturbing stories ever committed to the medium. Based on a short story by acclaimed author Harlan Ellison, I Have No Mouth provides a stark contrast to the typically saccharine offerings of the genre.

I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream is as dark and depressing as the Ellison story on which it's based -- its morbid plot, bleak artwork, and twisted logic are definitely not meant for children. The puzzles are challenging, and the multiple solutions to each character's section of the game add interesting twists to the story. The player makes ethical decisions which directly affect the game's outcome; often there are several ways to solve a problem, one more "right" than the others. Overall, I found the game did not live up to its hype, but fans of Ellison's writing will enjoy it, and it will challenge even the experienced adventurer.

Just Adventure
I think this is perhaps the reason why reviewers were unkind to this game – the author’s heavy involvement with the creative team does smack of a bit of hubris. And the further facts that a) he’s not an actor, b) he has a grating and irritating voice, and c) his character “AM” talks a LOT.

Harlan Ellison describes hell. A hell with a pseudo god, created by a stupid mankind. Even if it appears little plausible that three machines that were programmed on war suddenly fraternize and even unite with the enemy, one nevertheless can't dismiss Ellison's warning to depict human information in computers as nonsense. An adventure game, which will less entertain than set us thinking. Neither the plot, nor the course of the game make trivial fun, but do haunt in a desperate kind of way. If one adds on top that "No Mouth" has several bugs and dead ends and in the German version they simply dropped a character, which confusingly emerges again and again in the manual and game texts nevertheless, then even deep-rooted adventure gamers will think thrice about acquiring the game and rightly so. Harlan Ellison -, SF -, hell and self-castigation-fans and perhaps potential visitors of the movie "I, Robot" should grab the game nevertheless with an appropriate used-price for this classic.

Når det er bedst, har dette spil en drømmeagtig kvalitet, men ellers er I Have No Mouth, And I Must Scream ikke andet end et middelmådigt eventyr med et lang række større og mindre fejl.

GameSpot
Die-hard adventurers will certainly find a challenge (especially during the incomprehensible end-game) and Ellison aficionados may be intrigued by this extension of his work, but I Have No Mouth… doesn't prove to be a worthy translation of the sci-fi classic. Instead, this title relies on the frustrating cliches and roadblocks that have plagued the adventure game genre since its inception.
