It’s very rare when I find an RTS game that is original and compelling enough that I actually finish it. Most entries in the RTS genre get boring, repetitive, or both, but with the massive selection of primary creatures and the ability to create thousands of unique units, the potential for creative gameplay opportunities exceeds the actual content of the singe-player experience.

All in all, I'd say that Relic has done an excellent job on Impossible Creatures. For its gameplay depth, originality and excellent difficulty balancing, I give it the editor's choice award. The replay value of this game is very good, as I've found out that MP matches can be quite intense, and after all, this is where the truly creative players should sparkle. Impossible Creatures is a massive and a great all-around project. It's well worth your money, so I'd suggest you go out and buy it. After all, how often do you get a chance to lead an army of polar bears with dragonfly wings against an army of chimps with shark fins?

Overall, Impossible Creatures is a really fun and addicting title, despite the fact that it’s pretty similar to other titles in the same genre if you strip it down to the core. RTS fans and online multiplayer fans should have a great time with it, and even if you have “been there done that” before, the sheer unique and bizarre storyline mixed with a fast paced combat style game makes it a lot of fun to play … and never a dull moment. Charles Darwin, Steve Irwin, and Catdog would be pleased, and you will be too when you pop in Impossible Creatures.

CanadianGamer
In conclusion, Relic's Impossible Creatures is not nearly as ground breaking as their previous release, but it is a solid RTS game. The design of your own units is a challenge in itself and can lead to surprising and humorous results. The top-notch production values and gameplay make Impossible Creatures worth every cent of your gaming dollar; just don't go in expecting a revolutionary game.

The creature creation process is close to enough to recommend this by itself, but put together with a fun single player mode and interesting Magic the Gathering style army building multiplayer strategy, it's a kooky ride that most gaming fans will enjoy. Add that up with the promise of many mods due to Relic's mod developer network and open engine, this could grow bigger than it is now.

Overall, the game plays well, although experienced players will be left feeling a little 'flat' as there does not appear to be enough in the way of micromanagement to keep up the interest - it appears that just one little generator can run any amount of electrical/defensive structures. You are also left with the impression that things haven't been taken as far as they could - the ability to combine pairs of hybrid creatures etc for instance (but maybe that will come in an ICII).

Overall the game is good. The number of units you can make is definitely the main reason you will come back to the game but most of the time will be spent on the creature creation screen trying to see what the various animals look like when combined.

Mal sehen, was Hobby-Bastler da noch rausholen.

Relic's second game is an inventive, full-featured real-time strategy game that has a lot of good qualities. It also arrives on the heels of two of the best real-time strategy games ever made, and while its concept may seem very different from those games, the core of the gameplay is not, yet those games handle the fundamentals of real-time strategy combat a lot better than Impossible Creatures does. On its own merits, Impossible Creatures is certainly enjoyable and interesting, and it's worthwhile for the campaign alone, whose story will motivate you to slog through some fights that aren't always all that fun. In the end, you'll find yourself having a better time dreaming up and tweaking your custom armies than actually sending your creatures into the fray.

In the end, however great it is to able to create your own units and the amazing amount of possibilities it gives, it takes us back to standard RTS gameplay which is still good fun, but I expected way more from this title. The game is entertaining and amusing, but there are better RTS games out there.

I'm a pretty big RTS fanatic, so I usually want to like new twists on the old formula when they come out. Impossible Creatures is a great idea on paper, but it simply fizzles when the meaty portion of its plot is exposed to play.

Game Revolution
Though it struggles a bit as a real-time strategy game, Impossible Creatures makes great strides in unit building and should be commended for its lofty goals. More emphasis on actual gameplay refinement would have led to a better game, but I suppose evolution moves one step at a time.

For those of us well steeped in the ethos of the genre it is a well made and very pretty game whose promises of a new experience don't deliver in quite the manner we would hope for. But as a game to be given to those who we one day hope to dominate in one of our favourite RTS games, it's a wise choice.

GameSpy
After Homeworld's greatness, Impossible Creatures can't help but feel like something of a letdown. Other than some bugs and a weak campaign, it's not really a bad game. In fact, it's a decent RTS overall, and it can be interesting (at least for a little while) to assemble your own units. The problem is that Impossible Creatures nevertheless feels, in the end, just like every other run-of-the-mill RTS you've ever played.

Eurogamer.net (UK)
Do we like Impossible Creatures? Somewhat grudgingly, we'd have to say yes. While acknowledging that the gameplay of the title isn't going to be remotely interesting to hardcore strategy fans, the fact is that the game is extremely charming and (dare we say it again) beautifully presented, and will have massive appeal to more casual PC gamers who feel a bit left out in the cold by very hardcore RTS titles, or who want a fun game that won't tax their machine massively. Ultimately, we were disappointed by the game's lack of depth, but we very much enjoyed playing it - and that, at the end of the day, is far more important than anything else. It may indeed be a case of style over substance, but in this instance, there's just enough gaming substance there to justify the style.

To be honest, this isn't a game that newcomers to the genre will find easy to pick up. The tutorial and early maps lead you in gently enough, but when you've got to manage your resources (coal and electricity), defend a base, complete sub-quests and create new units all at the same time, it's easy to panic and this often results in you having to restart the mission. Ultimately though, it's worth the effort getting the hang of the game - after all, there really is nothing quite like having an army of genetic freaks at your beck and call...

The catch for Impossible Creatures is supposed to be the creature creation, but I found the whole concept and execution to be unexciting at best.

50
Adrenaline Vault, The (AVault)
Great production values aren’t enough to raise Impossible Creatures from being a mediocre exercise in button pushing, as it’s high on glitz but short on actual strategy, given over to what ultimately is little more than tank-rushes with imaginative graphics. Though it might be a solid choice for newcomers to the real-time strategy genre, the animals here aren’t treated with the wonder that they deserve but are thrown away with such reckless abandon that even Dr. Moreau would blush with shame. Impressive as they are, the creatures here aren’t impossible — they’re merely expendable.
50
Computer Gaming World (CGW)
The ability to play Dr. Moreau keeps Impossible Creatures from being a completely generic RTS, but the missions don’t require strategy so much as huge armies and brute force. Most likely, the novelty of the campaign will wear off before you can access the strongest creatures and answer the riddle posed by the game with an elephant of your own.

Rebell.at Games

Armchair Empire, The
Initially promising, Impossible Creatures joins the scrap heap populated by similarly "gimmicky" titles like Max Payne and Red Faction. Games are like fine machinery: well-conceived, meticulously constructed and tuned to perfection. You can't piggyback an entire engine on the strength of one piston. The sooner developers learn to design their machines with respect to all moving parts, the better.
