Allez-y sans crainte, je vous le dis, Indiana Jones And The Last Crusade c'est du tout bon.

Trying to get off the first level is hard enough, let alone attempting the rest of the game! The graphics and sound are both really good, with Indy leaping, punching and whipping around, and the backdrops are very fancy, indeed. Gripes aside, the game is incredibly addictive, however infuriating, and will have you stuck in front of the box for hours on end. A good game, but certainly not for novices.

Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade is almost as hard as the hero himself! From the very beginning the odds are stacked against you as you battle an amazingly tight time limit and hordes of gun-wielding heroes. There are plenty of nasty hazards and traps to catch out an unwary Indy - so prepare to lose plenty of lives. It certainly helps if you make a map, since the game is the same every time you play it. The graphics are truly superb, with some of the best sprites and backdrops I've seen on the Sega, and the music's not bad either. Seasoned platforms and ladders fans should be in their element with this - those not so good at this type of game might find it all too frustrating, though.

Additions to the ST game are a couple of extra sound effects, such as the 'Indy walking on cornflakes' effect when he moves. The same's true with the admittedly nice digitized pictures – but how much nicer some real gameplay would have been.

Atari STThe Games Machine (UK)
Throughout, its graphical detail leaves much to be desired – Indy sliding across the floor without moving his legs and the amazing static waves on Level One which surely could have been animated. These omissions apply to all versions of this drearily repetitious game.

Predictably monochrome (and not necessarily a drawback), colour isn't the only missing thing: what happened to the stalactites that plague the first level of the 16-bit versions? More seriously, why is Indy an adult and not a boy scout? Movement is also on the slow side especially when Indy whips a bad guy; not very impressive.

Sadly, this movie legend winds up in the same pile of failed movie carts as E.T. and Back to the Future. Perhaps Indy will play better as a hand-held. If not, maybe it's better that this is the Last Crusade.

Amstrad CPCThe Games Machine (UK)
A colourful loading screen promises a good game, but its actual appearance makes it look like a direct port over from the Spectrum – and movement is even slower, with Indy swashbuckling at the speed of a crippled snail. See the movie, but approach the game with caution.

ndiana Jones and the Last Crusade is a short game, but due to the annoying control, cheap A.I. and insane difficulty level, most gamers probably will kick this horrible product into the dusty part of their game collection before finishing it. And that's rightly so, because it is just one of the many games that proves that for unclear reasons, movies and games seldom form a quality mix. Actually, that's quite an euphemistic statement for such a turd as this game manages to be!

The controls are uncommonly poor. Jumping only works half of the time, and trying to leap at the edge of a platform sends you plunging into the abyss. Swinging on your whip is about as easy as picking up a watermelon seed! The characters are poorly rendered with cheesy black outlines, and the villains of the first stage look more like a bunch of Jerry Garcia impersonators! The catacombs are loaded with flaming mice the size of cats, and the final level isn't even consistent with the movie, as ducking under the swinging blades results is fatal! It doesn't help that you instantly die from touching harmless objects like a bush, pile of bones, or even a puddle of water! And when he dies, our hero unleashes a painful wale that's positively demonic! Even the Indiana Jones theme sounds cheesy. As the final insult, the picture on the cartridge shows Indy being chased by a plane, a tank, and a German convoy, none of which appear anywhere in the game!

This is definitely the most hideous game I've seen on the NES. Indy looks even goofier than he did in Temple of Doom, if that's at all possible. The film provides for plenty of interesting stage ideas, but this shoddy game even makes jumping the cars on a circus train seem dull! The first stage, entitled "Exploring the caves", is about as unimaginative as you can get, with all the obligatory cheap hits including falling stalactites. It's hard to grab onto ropes, and fights with bad guys amount to trading punches until somebody falls over. The controls are so stiff that I might as well be controlling C3PO. Last Crusade is one truly pathetic piece of trash, and for a 1994 game (by LucasArts no less), it has absolutely no excuse.
