The sum is greater then the whole with Indiana Jones and the Staff of Kings. The two player adventure is well done, and the classic Fate of Atlantis game holds up to this day. The main adventure is a disappointing action adventure title that never seems to pick up. If your only gonna play the solo quest then deduct two whole points, otherwise your getting a good deal altogether.

Staff of Kings is compelling but it does have some rough edges. The checkpoints are frequent, but you're often forced to re-watch cut-scenes or tutorials. Some stages are confusing. One sequence involved saving a girl with my whip, but I couldn't make out what the diagram on the screen was prompting me to do. The game also has its share of minor graphical and frame-rate hiccups. If the adventure seems a tad short, that's partly due to the minimal load times and quick pacing. As a neat bonus, a second complete Indiana Jones game is also included: Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis. This 1992 point-and-click PC game is still fun to play and its 2D graphics have held up well. Together, these two provide some of the best Indiana Jones action you'll find on any console.

With iffy and overused motion controls, simplistic enemy AI, obvious puzzles and a very short main quest, Staff of Kings could very well fit in average licensed shovelware category. But despite obvious flaws, the details are all spot on, and most of the time it’s just plain fun. It' still not the game the great man deserves, but given his patchy recent record, this time around Indy gave us more enjoyment than expected.

It's not all bad news though. The included Gears of War-styled shootouts are nicely done; the puzzles, which are a little too easy, capture the spirit of the original movies; and the combat is tremendous fun.

With clunky controls that would have worked great with a little more attention, sub-par graphics, and unsatisfying puzzle solving that can leave you frustrated, Staff of Kings tries very hard to disappoint its players. But the attempt to make a great Indiana Jones game that actually feels like playing through a movie is lying there somewhere under the surface. No doubt some will overlook the frustration factor and enjoy a taste of what could have actually been a great game. Most, however, will find far more enjoyment with the Fate of Atlantis bonus, which saves this release from being a disappointment.

I was hoping for a lot more from Staff of Kings, but in the end it's a strictly mediocre game. It's worth playing through, but even at its budget price of $30 it's hard to outright recommend for purchase, although I do recommended you check it out for yourself.

The game's relatively low difficulty and short adventure mean that Indiana Jones and the Staff of Kings can be finished in a day. The good news is that it means you may not experience the irregular distances between some of the checkpoints. Enjoying the game also depends largely on how much of a fan you are of the franchise; the title may only be appreciated by those who are willing to look past some of its bigger flaws. Even so, its relatively short escape to parts unknown, coupled with its limited gameplay, can make this adventure feel like another in a growing string of low moments in Indy's console career.

Indiana Jones and the Staff of Kings is entirely unremarkable. The solid design ideas and diverse nature of the gameplay keeps it semi-interesting, but it never reaches out and grabs you. And in fact, it just doesn’t have that capability. The techincals are too drab and out-of-date (even for PS2 software), the clunky controls will put a damper on just about everything you do, and the storyline is about as memorable as the game itself. I suppose that if it shows up in the bargain bin for ten bucks, and you happen to be a huge Indiana Jones fan, it might be worth a look; something to play through on a rainy day. But it’s certainly not recommended at the current $30 price point and even though there’s nothing horribly wrong with this production, it's just…just…’yawn’

Considering the wealth of amazing movie content spawned by the creative powers at LucasFilm, it still boggles the mind that LucasArts is seemingly incapable of crafting a truly worthy gaming offshoot that encapsulates the wonder and excitement of Indiana Jones or the star-gazing imagination of Star Wars. Not that LucasArts and developer A2M are plumbing quite the same depths as other studios similarly guilty of repeatedly half-baked productions, but Indiana Jones and the Staff of Kings is such a hopelessly flat experience that it's hard to recommend it to anyone other than absolute Indy fanatics.

Elsewhere, the addition of eight co-op levels (where you play alongside a hilariously voiced Sean Connery) adds a smattering of interest, while unlockable challenge levels where you fight off waves of thugs might appeal to some - but it hardly makes ups for the main game. At a time when LucasArts appears to be waking up to the potential of its rich back catalogue, it's crushingly disappointing that the publisher is still content to churn out loveless titles like this. The Staff of Kings certainly has all the ingredients for a cracking action-adventure, but somewhere along the line the team ended up making arguably the most forgettable Indiana Jones game to date.

Those looking for an Indiana Jones game to right the wrongs of Spielberg's latest movie sadly haven't got what they were hoping for. Staff of Kings tries to do so many things that it fails to nail any of them. The combat is clumsy, the adventuring is dull, the shooting is uninspired and the presentation is severely lacking. This most definitely isn't the Indiana Jones game you were looking for.

I wouldn't say they completely break the gameplay scenarios, but they absolutely do detract from them. Smart Wii developers learned a long time ago never to rely solely on motion because 1) nobody actually wants to waggle their way through a five- plus-hour game and 2) they aren't very reliable. That LucasArts and A2M chose to use gestures so religiously demonstrates a breathtaking level of ignorance to these truths, which is unfortunate, because the simple inclusion of an alternate control scheme would have made a lot of gamers happy. If you're an Indy fan, you'll still like the adventure to be had -- true enough, there are still some engaging puzzles and the sheer variety in challenges and locales is remarkable. Everyone else, however, is better off leaving the Staff of Kings undiscovered.

Only approach this game if you intend to play Fate of Atlantis. Staff of Kings hardly finds the Indiana Jones pulse.

WiiAusGamers
This game had the potential to be a new Fate of Atlantis, and if A2M had concentrated on making this a spruced up point and click adventure, with better puzzles and dropping the repetitive dodgy action elements, the score below would have been much higher.

Indiana Jones and the Staff of Kings is all the more frustrating because there are tiny, oh-so-brief sprinklings of entertainment to be had - they're just padded wall to wall with frustrating gameplay and below average presentation. It's not pretty, rarely fun and it feels like a rushed attempt to cash in on the license. If you like Indy and you like cutting yourself, this could be just the ticket - otherwise, save your money.

Released a few years ago when the PS2 was the height of gaming, then Staff of Kings might have faired a little better. As it stands, this is a very disappointing game.

It has been a rough couple of years for Indiana Jones. The Staff of Kings arrived with a lot of promise, but in the end it's just another crime against this once-great movie and game icon.
