Okay, so I’ve cheered and jeered this game a bit. The final verdict, however, is that this game is insanely addictive and has a great storyline in The Trip and replayability in Instant Action and Multiplayer modes. I think if I had played (had the ability to play?) on a better system, I would’ve enjoyed this game even more than I already did. If you were a fan of Interstate 76, you need this game. If you are looking for a good solid action driving game, Interstate 82 may be just what you are looking for, which is why I give this game a score of 84.

Basically, Interstate '82 isn't a bad game. Compared to other games on the market, like Driver, or even Vigilante 8, it stands up pretty well. The action is intense, and the graphics are pretty good. However, when you compare this game to its predecessor, this game's theme seems cheesy. Yes, the early 80's were cheesy in their own right, but this game ups the Limberger aspect ten-fold, and I keep getting the feeling it wasn't necessary.

With the exception of the graphics engine, the changes to the core gameplay are not for the better. The game is still fast and fun and has an interesting storyline, but the game should have kept the better features of the original game and added to them instead of remaking the whole experience. Bottom Line: Graphics engine is very good, but would have been better had the background objects faded into view smoothly. Good storyline and fast, fun action. More of an arcade experience than I-76 was, the game removes some of the nicer elements of that game like salvage management, dashboard view, and the ability to instantly take out an enemy with a handgun from the driver's seat. Still no way to save a game during a mission. A fun game, but could have been much more so had they stuck with the formula that made I-76 such a hit.

The game will give you hours of pleasure. Parents need to be aware of brief amounts of profane language when buying Interstate '82 for their kids.

erreicht
Interstate ’82 bei weitem
nicht. Dabei haben
die Designer auf den
ersten Blick vieles richtig gemacht: Die
gestalteten Missionen. Ständig passiert
Überraschendes – sei es, daß ich plötzlich
vom Jäger zum Gejagten werde oder mir
auf einmal ein spannendes Duell mit einem
riesigen Minenbohrer liefern muß.
Leider geht der Preis für den »ungeschicktesten
Einsatz einer 3D-Engine« diesen
Monat an Interstate ’82. Naturlandschaften
hui, Gebäude und Städte pfui.
Trotz der Grafik aber ein spielerisch grundsolides
Programm, mit dem vor allem automobile
Actionfans viel Spaß haben.

Game Revolution
It may have a few problems and an intense similarity to its predecessor, but I'82 still does not fail to please. It's got the looks, the style, the sound, and the gameplay of a winner. It's even got one of the zaniest, funniest, most politically motivated plots in the history of gaming. I'd spoil it all for you, but suffice to say that someone important angrily screams that "I frickin' hate this Hedonism! I'm going to climb into that giant robot and use it to kill you all!" I'll leave you to find out who. Just get out there and, if you can be a little forgiving, pick this one up and give it your sweet loving. If you don't, you can have it your way but they'll find you just like they found Belushi.

Interstate '82 made me do a complete neck-jerk. It's one of those games which feels more like a spin-off than a sequel, and makes you wonder "What the hell happened to the series?," kind of like that Cheers-inspired "The Tortellis" sitcom. When I first loaded I'82 I went "guh," and then I played it some and went "buh," but I eventually just settled on a complacent and mediocre "muh." In the end, I'82 is just disappointedly bland and boring, which is really hard to say considering how much I liked the original.

Game Over Online
Interstate ’82 is a lot less impressive and groundbreaking as it was originally touted to be. Its astounding resemblance to the lame Twisted Metal on PC and its horrible physics, tiled textures and lacking environment variety make it significantly less enjoyable than Interstate ’76 was. I’m not sure I can really recommend it, perhaps only to those who actually enjoyed Twisted Metal (for anything other than multiplayer – I must admit to having played that for about 8 hours straight one sad, sad night). Activision, as the proverbial saying goes, dropped the ball on this one – and ended up with a very mediocre title which is sure to disappoint the fans of the original.

Jammer, jammer, jammer.

Where Interstate '76 was cohesive and involving, Interstate '82 feels unfocused and generic.

Sometimes good ideas are not the best ideas - this would have been a more enjoyable game if it stayed in the 70's.

Gaming Age
On a technical level Interstate 82 has been pulled of very well. The downside is that even though the game's engine and story have advanced, the gameplay hasn't. The gameplay that is present in I82 is pretty much what made I76 popular, but that was back in a time where 3D technology was still getting the kick in the ass it needed. A lot more could have probably been done to keep this title a bit more fresh. Fans of the original might take a liking to this title, but if you were looking for something else, I would suggest not looking here.

Computer Games Magazine
Activision knows the marketplace pretty well, so it's unlikely they made all of these changes to the game on a whim. While you could argue that only a tiny number of gamers would appreciate an increase in the simulation aspects over those of the original, a simple arcade game with dull graphics isn't likely to win over any console converts either. Interstate 82 seems trapped in some sort of purgatory between its previous edition and its console brethren Vigilante 8, and it ultimately turns out less satisfying than either one.
