Ascendancy

I just started playing this. I have a question though that I couldn't find an answer to in the manual or tutorials. So perhaps someone here who has played it knows.

Is it possible to modify ships? It appeared to me that after using a ship with a colonizer kit it had become rather useless because it could no longer colonize anything and I couldn't give it weapons because all the slots were full. To me it would make sense to fly it back to a shipyard and install a new colonizer kit or some weapons, but the game gives me the idea this isn't possible and the only real option left is to destroy the ship, which seems rather like a waste of resources...

Got it. Further in the game you can build facilities for it.
