Slide to Play (Jan 06, 2010)
It's tough to go head-to-head with some of the best games on the iPhone like F.A.S.T. and Top Gun. However, that is the Herculean task that Ubisoft and Gameloft have attempted in Tom Clancy's H.A.W.X, and it's safe to say that they accomplished their goal and then some. Not only does H.A.W.X deliver the same near-flawless control that F.A.S.T. gave us, but it pushes the genre to new levels.

H.A.W.X. is a polished action packed story driven flight game with a hefty campaign. It lacks online multiplayer, and those into killing your friends online should stick with F.A.S.T. Other aspects lacking are the poor AI not fighting back aggresively enough, sluggish heavy planes and lack of altitude information. I can recommend H.A.W.X. though to anyone looking for a rewarding flight game with 26 real aircraft, and to all those who want to experience the console hit for a fraction of the price. Gameloft is really getting better, and better with each release.

For those who haven't already tried HAWX on modern consoles the App Store version is not only a great experience, but manages to be a great flight game on its own.

Dig your talons into Tom Clancy's H.A.W.X. because this airborne thrill ride makes good on the promise of high-flying action. While it could stand to hunt down some online multiplayer, exhilarating gameplay made complete by varied action and scores of incentives enables the game to excel.

The campaign is where most of the action is at. As accomplished Air Force pilot David Crenshaw, you tackle 13 missions set in the sand dunes of the Middle East to the cerulean blue seas of south Florida to nighttime skies in Virginia. Varied environments allude to the variety threaded throughout gameplay, Crenshaw's battle against private military contractor Artemis proving to be as entertaining as it is challenging.

Tom Clancy's HAWX is a good game with a dumb name. Based on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 game, HAWX is a thrilling flight game with strong story elements and great visuals. However, HAWX is weighted down by lackluster multiplayer, a problem seriously accented by the mere existence of F.A.S.T., which is the best multiplayer jet game on the entire App Store.

Yet another one of the Gameloft games we previewed in Paris was released this afternoon, Tom Clancy's H.A.W.X [App Store] is an air combat game that takes place in the somewhat expansive Ghost Recon game universe. Featuring complete voice-overs, 13 missions, 26 planes, and local multiplayer, H.A.W.X. can easily fly with the existing competition on the platform.
