For the few asking bucks "Iron Soldier 3" is a worthy purchase, even if its technical merits (lousy graphics and atrocious music) put it below the "Armored Core" series. Still, the handful of instances in which the game made me feel like a multi-ton destruction beast unleashed upon civilization were gleefully amusing. Your call!

Initially your suit’s controls prove cumbersome, with the omission of a strafe manoeuvre being especially problematic. However, perseverance reaps rewards and after getting to grips with the controls the combat becomes second nature. Ultimately, the well-designed, intelligent enemies should keep fans of this genre (you know who you are) blasting and stomping into the wee small hours.

Iron Soldier 3 came basically out of nowhere, I expected nothing of it, and it turned out to be quite a good time. 25 missions in various areas provides several varieties of urban destruction, the three different mech models are fun to try out, and there's enough cool FMV to choke a horse here, including a massive opening movie and intermission clips for every success or failure in battle. The multiplayer mode, however, is a buit of a toss-up. The split-screen framerate still moves just fine, but the slow pace of the game means this probably won't be your first choice with a friend (although the cooperative mode has definite potential). IS3 isn't quite something with general appeal, but what it sets out to do - reprise a classic exercise in leveling everything in sight - it does quite well.

If your dream is to beat up walls with gigantic, iron fists while spraying military vehicles with fake-looking gunfire (from a first-person perspective), then perhaps Iron Soldier 3 will be right up your alley. But given the rather shallow experience it offers, you're better off going with any of the numerous other mech games available.

Otherwise Iron Soldier 3 has its bases covered, with a pulsating soundtrack and even a split-screen two-player cooperative mode. Be sure to check out the amazing cinematic intro, which features some amazing special effects. Jaguar veterans will appreciate Iron Soldier 3, but its deliberate pace and steep learning curve may deter novice gamers.

What was the killer franchise for giant robot action on the now extinct Atari Jaguar comes across on the PlayStation as ugly, slow and uninspired. Iron Soldier 3 is the third installment of the previously Japan-only Iron Soldier franchise. While the previous games in the series may have been great, Iron Soldier for the PlayStation is, at best, mediocre.
