Ironman is one of those extremely simple, but also extremely addictive games. You get to drive a little offroad racing car against your friend or computer. On each stage you pick up nitro boosts and cash that you can use for upgrading your vehicle in between the races. So, it has all the elements you can wish, plus its simple, straightforward and a lot of fun. There are around 20 different stages but unfortunately only one type of car. However, this is not very important as your results in driving depend only on your skill as a driver. The graphics are nice & clean, but the sound falls back as it is practically nonexistent. Regardless, this game is loads of fun and I would recommend it to anyone!

If you've been lamenting the lack of Super Sprint type of games on the Amiga, lament no more. Off Road Racer is simply the best and will be for a long while yet!

ZX SpectrumComputer and Video Games (CVG)
Loads of colour on all the tracks with the minimum of attribute clash makes Spectrum Off Road Racer a bit of a looker. Like all the 8 bit versions, everything has been crammed into a single load, and even though only two players can participate, this still ranks as a great Speccy release.

DOSComputer and Video Games (CVG)
Even running on a 8 MHz machine, Off Road Racer gives the ST version a run for its money! This probably ranks as the best coin-op conversion available on the PC, indistinguishable from the Amiga in VGA mode.
94
Amstrad CPCComputer and Video Games (CVG)
If you're sick of blocky Amstrad graphics, then have no fear! This version of the game has fine hi-res visuals, decent sound and all the fun of the arcade to boot! Needless to say, this comes highly recommended.
94
Commodore 64Computer and Video Games (CVG)
Slightly blocky graphics, but the three player mode has been retained and all the thrills of the 16 bit version are there for the taking. This ranks as one of the best C64 games we've seen in a very long time.
94
Atari STComputer and Video Games (CVG)
Apart from slightly inferior sonics, Off Road Racer is identical to the Amiga version. Check it out as soon as it hits the shelves!

Overall Ivan "Ironman" Stewart's Super Off Road is brilliant. It's highly playable, addictive and has superb gameplay. The game shows what can be packed into a Spectrum and is a must for all Spectrum owners as an example of Z80 programming at its very best.

Of course, it's not just the simple, accessible game design that makes Ironman so good - the Codies, for instance, have done hundreds of similar things, albeit with a simpler perspective and none of the interesting bouncy up-and-down bits. It's the skill with which it's been programmed. Graftgold (last responsible for the Speccy Rainbow Islands) are the blokes behind it, and they've managed to incorporate lots of colour, very little clash, and get everything jumping around incredibly quickly. And it all loads in one go as well. It achieves what it sets out to do more or less perfectly. In case you hadn't guessed already, I love Ironman. For my money this is one of the most fun games of the year, and the best Supersprint-type game I've ever played (much better than the original was on our rubber.keyed chum, that's for sure). The business, and no mistake.

All the coin-op’s addictive gameplay has certainly been transferred to the Speccy conversion, and as always the best way to play is against a friend. Graphically the game is great with small but nicely detailed and fast moving car sprites. The backgrounds are also detailed and certainly cause headaches, especially when an opponent is on your tail and you end up at the bottom of a water filled hole! Full marks to programming team Graftgold for producing such a frustratingly playable game.

Super Off Road is the best Super Sprint type game ever seen on the Speccy - rush out and buy it at once. What are you waiting for?

It really annoys me that Super Sprint never came out on the NES, but the release of Super Off-Road more than makes up for it! The graphics capture the coin-op almost perfectly with the minimum of flicker, and the gameplay's pretty decent as wall, particularly in two-player mode. Super Off-Road is a tad on the slow side though, and the nitros aren't quite as effective as they should be. Still, not to worry though, because Super Off-Road is still a fine racer. RC Pro Am still ranks as the definitive NES racer, though.

Atari STACE (Advanced Computer Entertainment)
Identical in every respect to the Amiga conversion, except (funny old world that it is) the tunes are actually less irritating!
84
AmigaACE (Advanced Computer Entertainment)
Graphics look identical to the coin-op's, although they're slightly slower /but not seriously so). The tunes get a little grating,. but mercifully you're able to turn them off and just have the okay-ish sound effects. Technically stunning it isn't, but great fun it is, especially with two friends in tow.
83
Commodore 64ACE (Advanced Computer Entertainment)
The most attractive of the 8-bit versions, although the pseudo-3D effect is marred by the car sprites occasionally overlapping the roadside fences. However the all-important fun gameplay is here – in buckets!

Minor additions include a flag-waving man at the starting/finish line, and bails of hay scattered throughout certain courses (which are slightly annoying). The gameplay consists of four tiny cars racing around a series of dirt tracks a single screen in size. The courses are loaded with bumps, ramps, and rolling hills, making for a wild ride. The cars move fast and the physics is just bizarre! The controls boil down to accelerating and steering, although you also have a limited number of "nitros" that provide turbo boosts. The top three finishers in each race are awarded prize money, and between contests you can use your money to soup up your car. That gray CPU-controlled car is incredibly good, and nearly impossible to beat. I really wish the game was more customizable, and where's the four-player mode?? It could have been better, but Super Off Road is simple and fun in an old-school way.

GenesisThe Video Game Critic
Oh yeah - I loved this one the first time I laid eyes on it! It looks decidedly old school, with tiny cars riding around miniature dirt tracks that fit on a single screen. The graphics are minutely detailed, and the tracks and cars have a rugged 3D look to them. The tracks are small but exciting, with bumps, ramps, water, and multiple paths. Four little cars speed through the course, bouncing around and bumping into each other around every turn. The controls are simple: one button accelerates and the other gives you a "nitro" turbo boost. It's all the fun of Micro Machines without the limited view. Bonuses randomly appear around the course, and between races you can upgrade parts and purchase more nitros. It's a shame that there's no four-player mode, but my main complaint is that the computer-controlled gray car is just too hard to beat! Super Off Road is a hidden gem as far as Genesis games go. I can play this one again and again.

ZX SpectrumACE (Advanced Computer Entertainment)
Track graphics are colourful, but the cars are monochrome. Like the CPC, only two humans can play simultaneously. The player cars are distinguished by black and white flags waving from their aerials, which can lead to slight confusion when in a road ruck.
83
Amstrad CPCACE (Advanced Computer Entertainment)
Graphics are excellent, using the 4-colour mode to good effect with each car being easily distinguishable. The tunes are very good for a CPC, although they slow noticeably during the game. Despite the fact that only two humans can play simultaneously and the game runs a little slowly, the Fun Factor remains very high.

SEGA Master SystemDefunct Games
Even with all of these amazing 3D racing games floating around Super Off-Road still proves to be entertaining. This is still a lot of fun because there aren't many racers with this perspective, which means that this game isn't as out of date as you might think. If you're looking for a unique racing experience on your Master System then you can't do any better than Super Off-Road.

AmigaAmiga Power
Flawless arcade conversion. The track sequence is silly (four of the first eight races are on track 1), the difficulty curve is steep, and control is a tad over-sensitive. The Amiga's best Super Sprint game, but with some niggles that stop it being the true classic it might have been.

Game GearElectronic Gaming Monthly (EGM)
This game plays very closely to the other versions that inspired it. The game is more difficult to follow on the Game Gear, due in large part to the small size of the screen. Beyond that complaint, however, the gameplay seems more repetitive on the portable and not quite as exciting as other versions.

You're not going to jump out of a flatbed for Super Off-Road, but it's a good arcade translation that should provide some good two-player competition.

Super Off Road er meget skægt i starten, men efter at have spillet det i en times tid, bliver det lidt kedeligt.

GenesisSega-16.com
As a two-player game, Super Off-Road just feels all the more hollow, and it's a wonder why four-player support was not included in this Genesis version as it was in the NES port. Simple left/right steering and two button control (accelerate and boost) make it a game anyone can pick up and enjoy. While sometimes obstacles or the track railing can obscure the player's truck, the vehicles themselves are pretty responsive aside from the odd spin out here or there. Ivan "Ironman" Stewart's Super Off-Road was Leland Corporation's biggest hit before being absorbed into Tradewest, and that was due to the fantastic multi-player action, which was sadly forgotten while making the leap to the Genesis. Lackluster production and limited two-player support leave Super Off-Road a weak console representation of an arcade game which ultimately will be remembered as a flash in the pan itself.

LynxElectronic Gaming Monthly (EGM)
Super Off-Road was one of the best games in the arcade and on the Super NES. In fact, I've enjoyed this game on every format it's been on, except this one. Why is it so choppy? I mean, the Lynx is an excellent system, but this doesn't impress me at all. The controls need work, especially when you press the control pad while your car is flashing. It's too bad. I was really looking forward to this title. Not very good at all.
