Jack Nicklaus' Greatest 18 Holes of Major Championship Golf

Som entusiastisk golfspelare var det med stor förväntan jag laddade in det senaste golfspelet till ST:n: Jack Nicklaus golf.

Despite a flattened head, the digitised Jack shown in-between holes is an attractive piece of presentation. The same can't be said for the game itself; graphic definition and animation are merely that of a carefully designed C64 or Amstrad game and the scenery graphics are drawn slowly and tiringly. Sound highlight is the atmospheric polite applause from the crowd.

Die Grafik dieser Umsetzung sieht nicht allzu toll aus - das stört nicht sonderlich, aber der langsame Bildaufbau zehrt an den Nerven. Spieltechnisch ist alles recht adrett, aber die Wartepausen vor jedem Abschlag schmälern die Freude. Nur geduldigen Golffans zu empfehlen.

Realistisch ist sie ja, diese neue Golfumsetzung fürs NES, aber leider auch etwas langweilig. Die Grafik wird von jedem Abschlagsort aus neu berechnet, aber das dauert immer ein paar Sekunden, was auf Dauer etwas nervt. Schönheitspreise sind auch nicht zu holen; alles wirkt ein wenig grob und klotzig. Wer mehr auf actionbetonte Sportspiele steht, dem wird's aufs gröblichste gruseln. Geduldige Naturen, die Wert auf eine möglichst realistische Golfsimulation legen, sollten sich das Modul hingegen einmal ansehen.

All golfing simulations have to be compared with the classic Leaderboard, and Jack Nicklaus' Golf doesn't really measure up. The scenery is pretty blocky and often strangely coloured - Jack looks like he is teeing off from a light blue pond! Shots seem equally easy whether playing from the fairway or a bunker, and putting is a piece of cake. Despite its flaws, the game is fun for a few rounds. But then why get this when you can have Leaderboard instead?

There are a lot of good golf games appearing on other consoles but, most mysteriously (considering it is the world's number one games system) there aren't any on the Nintendo, and this pretty poor effort doesn't improve the situation. The 3D course display (as well as being ugly and slow to draw) is pointless because it gives very little idea of how far away the course features actually are. This makes gauging the power and direction of the shot ridiculously difficult, and consequently the game is terribly frustrating. The four player option is laudable, but why would four people want to play such a duff game? Give it a miss.

Da nützen auch die passable Grafik und die vielen Spiel-Modi nichts; "Jack Nicklaus Golf" ist auf dem Amiga so langsam, daß selbst der geduldigste Caddy eindöst.

Auf dem Atari ST hat Golf-Profi Jack Nicklaus dieselben Tempo-Probleme wie bei der Amiga-Version: Die 3D-Grafik des Loch-Marathons braucht elend lange Berechnungszeiten, in denen man förmlich die Bäume wachsen sieht. Zudem gewinnt die Grafik keinen Schönheitspreis.
