Description
Jade Empire (Special Edition) is the Windows port of the Xbox game of
Jade Empire.
The story is the same as in the original game. The player chooses one of the available characters which all have different strengths, weaknesses and fighting styles. The journey starts in Two Rivers, a small town on a hidden island on which Master Li trains students at a martial arts school to become deadly fighters. But the protagonist and your friend Dawn Star are special, and one day, as their training is nearly complete, bandits attack the village, Master Li reveals why the duo is special and sends them out into the world to find their own paths and fight the evil that is threatening the world - or maybe to become the evil themselves.
The most notable difference compared to the Xbox version are the graphics which not only feature more detailed textures but also resolutions up to 1600x1200 and some other DirectX 9.0c features. There are also a few gameplay additions such as two new enemies, two new fighting styles, a world map, a new mighty weapon for every weapon branch and more.
The controls in the many close-combat situations have also been changed to better fit the new keyboard/mouse-layout. The player can now quick access 10 fighting styles using the number keys instead of the 4 Xbox players can access using the controller buttons. Along with this, the limitation to fight only one enemy type at a time during combat has also been removed. The battles can feature different kinds of enemies, that all require a unique fighting style to defeat them as the player can switch between the styles faster.

Trivia
Some of the stories mentioned in Jade Empire are indeed myths from ancient China. One of the game characters is associated with the myth of Wan Hu. In the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), Wan apparently constructed a chair with rockets attached to it that enabled him to fly to outer space. Other accounts treat this story as historical true but with a different outcome: Wan blew up into a thousand pieces that may or may not have made it to outer space.
This story was a segment entitled "Ming Dynasty Astronaut" on the much too popular Discovery Channel show "Mythbusters" (Dec 5, 2004).
