In the final analysis, it may not be as playable or fun as Mortal Kombat, but at least Ultra Vortek makes an effort. Jaguar owners looking for a respectable fighter should start here.
Just Games Retro (Oct 31, 2007)
If the Jaguar had done well, or if this game had appeared on other platforms, Ultra Vortek would have had a wider place in history. I suppose that's the risk of supporting a console that's too advanced or too unique from the others on the market. It's certainly not worth getting a Jag for, no matter how much of a fighting game fan you are, but a nice addition to your fighting library if you're already looking to take the Jaguar plunge.
Should you buy Ultra Vortex? Absolutely, it's the best fighting game for the Jaguar. Now all we need is a decent controller...ARRGGHH!

The Atari Times (Apr 19, 2001)
As a game, I've found it mostly enjoyable, but there aren't too many combos or juggles to be found. Also, the controls don't live up to the promise of MK as the special moves don't always come off as you would like. It's good fun, but doesn't fulfill it's ultimate promise.

Ultra Vortek fills the need for a solid Jaguar 2-D fighter. Even though it's rumored that the MK series is coming to the Jaguar, it still might not be a bad idea to check this one out.
Ultra Vortek is good enough that you won't get bored after an hour or two, but not good enough that it stands out in a crowded field of fighters. The Jaguar is short on fighting games, so if you want a good Jaguar fighter, Ultra Vortek is your best bet.
Game Zero (Oct, 1995)
Oh good grief... just what we needed, another Mortal Kombat rip-off. This platform is to powerful to be doing cheezy 2-D fighters on... Sure, the graphics weren't to bad, and the sound wasn't to bad, and the play-control wasn't to bad... but the game just wasn't very original. The only way I could recommend this game, is to someone who only owns a Jaguar, and let's face it, how many people only own a Jaguar?
GamePro (US) (Jul, 1995)
Ultra Vortex i a great game for someone who hasn't seen Killer Instinct, Mortal Kombat II or Super Street Fighter. But, if you've seen and played those games, you've seen more than Ultra Vortex has to offer.

Perhaps if the game's cosmetic appeal went even slightly beyond that of fecal matter, we could have at least enjoyed the undoubtedly hilarious designs of such characters as Dreadloc. Fortunately, since UV received little press at the time and released close to the jaguar's death, most gamers were spared this agonizing reminder of how poor Atari's self-proclaimed 64-bit system was.
